  • VOLUME 1 Vocabulary spreadsheet
Please read the guidelines on the first page before adding any words.
  • Advice for those new to reading
  • Jisho is a popular online Japanese-English dictionary.
  • ichi.moe is a tool for parsing out sentences. You can type/paste in a whole sentence and it will try and break the sentence down into its individual parts.
  • Deepl will translate a sentence from Japanese to English. Itโ€™s obviously not going to be right all the time, so if you want to check your translation itโ€™s normally better to ask in the thread.

:speech_balloon: Discussion Guidelines

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ใƒใ‚ฟใƒใƒฌ. If youโ€™re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current weekโ€™s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I donโ€™t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current weekโ€™s reading (including trigger warnings that havenโ€™t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the โ€œHide Detailsโ€ or โ€œBlur Spoilerโ€ options. The text which says โ€œThis text will be hiddenโ€ should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of โ€œHide Detailsโ€, the section in the brackets that is labelled โ€œSummaryโ€ can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=โ€Chapter 1, Pg. 1โ€]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the โ€œHide Detailsโ€ option.

The โ€œBlur Spoilerโ€ option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

This is an example of the โ€œBlur Spoilerโ€ option.

  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasnโ€™t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select โ€œin this topicโ€. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
  • Be sure to join the conversation! Itโ€™s fun, and itโ€™s what keeps these book clubs lively! Thereโ€™s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, thereโ€™s a very good chance it has crossed somebody elseโ€™s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

:fire: Participation

Will you be reading along with us this week?
  • Iโ€™m reading along
  • Iโ€™m still reading but I havenโ€™t reached this part yet
  • Iโ€™ve already read this part but Iโ€™m here for the discussion
  • Iโ€™m haunting this book club after itโ€™s finished
  • Iโ€™ve stopped reading this book

Iโ€™m going to skip this week. I havenโ€™t finished last weekโ€™s stories yet and Iโ€™m quite enjoying them. Iโ€™ll be back ready fo a new story in week 13.

Feel free to continue reading at your own pace, everyone! This is a good club for that since itโ€™s short stories so it doesnโ€™t matter which order you read them in.

If itโ€™s any consolation I sometimes read with the IBC, and often with the IMC, and Iโ€™m struggling with some of these sentences.

Close, but Iโ€™d say โ€œas for Saito, heโ€™s still in the summer holidaysโ€.

As expected, I havenโ€™t finished my homework, and on top of that, I had a strange dream.

The verb ending is a continuative form. The fact that it ends the sentence too is I think stylistic.

P156 into p157:

Edit: ok that story was also a little unsettling.

Intermediate Book Club and Intermediate Manga Club. The IBC reads novels and the IMC reads difficult manga, or easier manga at a fast pace.

ใฉใ‚“ใช - what/what kind of

โ€œI wonder what kind of ghost (it isโ€ฆ)โ€

Page 143 Sentence 2

Hmmm, I think the ใŠใ‚ใ‚Œ is the written/literary connecting form (the masu-stem of the verb)

So heโ€™s saying something like 'My homework is finished, and I only have one wish"

Page 143 Sentence 3

ใชใ„ใง can also be a request/command, which comes from ใชใ„ใงใใ ใ•ใ„ (the ใใ ใ•ใ„ is just removed)

Summer holidays, donโ€™t end!

Page 143 Sentence 4

I think the ใ‚“ใ  in these sentences isnโ€™t past tense (I wanted), but a casual form of ใฎใ , which is explanatory.

I want to play more! (this is the reason I donโ€™t want summer holidays to end)

If it was past tense it would be ใ‚ใใณใŸใ‹ใฃใŸใ‚“ใ , I wanted to play more

Page 144 Sentence 1

ใพใพ is a continued state of being

ใ„ใฆ is ใ„ใ‚‹
This meaning is listed on jisho:

ใŠใญใŒใ„ใ€ใ‚ใ™ใ‚‚ ใชใคใ‚„ใ™ใฟใฎ ใพใพใง ใ„ใฆใ€‚
Literal: Please, tomorrow also, stay (in the state of being as) summer break

Natural: Please, let summer break continue tomorrow too!
or
Please, let tomorrow be summer break too!

Page 144 Sentence 4

ใšใฃใจ generally means โ€˜continuously.โ€™ It kind of translates differently based on context, just think of it as meaning something continues for a long time. โ€˜Foreverโ€™ might be ok here.

ใ€Œใšใƒผใฃใจใ€ใชใคใ‚„ใ™ใฟใฎ ใพใพใง ใ„ใŸใ„?ใ€

ใ„ใŸใ„ - ใ„ใ‚‹ to be, to remain

You want to stay (in the state of) summer holidays forever?

Page 145 Sentence 5

Ok this one was confusing me for a bit and I had to reread it a couple times. I think that the โ€˜summer break ghostโ€™ is actually talking about himself here.

The previous line was โ€˜ใปใ‚“ใจใ€ใชใคใ‚„ใ™ใฟใฎใŠใฐใ‘โ€™ โ€œIโ€™m really the summer break ghostโ€

Iโ€™ll break it down:

ใ€Œใšใƒผใฃใจ ใชใคใ‚„ใ™ใฟใฎ ใพใพใง ใ„ใŸใ„ใฃใฆ

We start with a quote ใฃใฆ

โ€œI said โ€˜I want to stay in the summer holidays foreverโ€™โ€

ใคใ‚ˆใ ใญใŒใฃใŸใ‚‰

When I wished strongly,

ใชใคใ‚„ใ™ใฟใƒใƒชใ‚ขใ‹ใ‚‰

From the summer break barrier

ใฌใ‘ใ ใ›ใชใ ใชใฃใกใ‚ƒใฃใฆ

Big combination of verb conjugations and contractions here.

ใฌใ‘ใ ใ™ to break away

ใฌใ‘ใ ใ›ใ‚‹ = potential form โ€œcanโ€ break away

ใฌใ‘ใ ใ›ใชใ„ = adding the negative, cannot break away

ใฌใ‘ใ ใ›ใชใใชใ‚‹ = adding ใชใ‚‹, it becomes that I cannot break away

ใกใ‚ƒใฃใฆ = casual contraction of ใฆใ—ใพใ† = expresses regret

โ€œIt became that I could not break away (from the summer break barrier)โ€

The barrier heโ€™s talking about is in the picture:

ไธ‰ๅๅนดใ€ใ‚‚ใ† ใšใฃใจใ€ใชใคใ‚„ใ™ใฟใฎ ใพใ‚“ใพใ‚“ใ ใ€‚

I think ใพใ‚“ใพ here is just ใพใพ

So this ghost guy has been trapped by this magical barrier in the state (ใพใพ) of summer break for thirty years, continuously.

I think the Story ist about a snake with a full stomach. Am I right?

Is the Title translated with โ€œIt seems all health and Happyโ€ or with โ€œIt seems full stomachโ€? I mean If the stomach is full you are Happy. So the Title could be the one Version while in the Story it means the other?

Sort of. Itโ€™s to do with a โ€œgrass for a full stomachโ€, but the snake is part of it.

Iโ€™m pretty sure itโ€™s a version of ใตใ‚Š
Itโ€™s an impressive way of eating.

So in this case itโ€™s 20 dishes/ 20 plates of

The man made short work of eating 20 plates of soba

I think here ใใ†ใƒผ is an expression of disappointment or similar. So just โ€œwe lost!โ€

It could be โ€œ20 plates leftโ€ but I think here itโ€™s โ€œ20 plates moreโ€. Theyโ€™re asking if he wants to do another bet.

Of course, the man refused

He returned on his journey. (This is another case where kanji would really help!)

Yep, this one!

More an expression of fear, but similar.
