💎 The Beginner Final Fantasy Club (BFFC)

Hi there, I am new to this community but not to gaming in general. I had two main gaming phases in the past, had to set them aside due to priorities (a lot of time consuming hobbies such as Magic the Gathering, building Gundam kits and… well, learning Japanese). Also father of a 3 months old now! But I never really stopped so thanks to a Steam Deck gift card for my biethday I downloaded FF Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles and boy I missed playing so much. Been grinding hard through these holidays.

I learnt English playing Pokémon Ruby as a child, thought I’d do the same since I also thought as a way to improve my vocabulary.

Trying to follow Game Gengo advice to use Yomitan + Script but the one I found for FFT is not exactly the same as the remaster and the lack of furigana does not help so I switched to… Pokemon Omega Ruby :joy:. Enjoying it, even if the process is long and I fear not to enjoy a longer game. Next in line is Final Fantasy X (which I played 20ish years ago) but I am a bit afraid of the difficulty of the language :smiling_face_with_tear:

Any advice on how to enjoy this process while not making it a chore is well accepted!

Welcome!

I don’t remember if you can pause between every textbox in FF X or if the game keeps auto-playing with the voice acting. If it’s the latter it’s going to make it much more painful. Don’t hesitate to look up an English playthrough to have on the side while progressing through the game in Japanese, there’s going to be a lot of text to process.

If you want something a lot easier, play through Final Fantasy 1 Pixel Remaster with our spreadsheet that contains the full script, translations and annotations. And don’t hesitate to post in the threads if you have questions!

I just remembered that I have the HD remaster of X on my Vita so I had a look: the dialogue is unpausable basically everywhere, and you have dialogue taking place in combat and other gameplay sequences. There’s even unsubtitled ambient voice acting.

There’s some secondary, unvoiced dialogue that can be paused, but all the important stuff is in scripted cutscenes.

Definitely not recommended as an entry point to FF in Japanese as far as I’m concerned.

Also the intro of that game is still as cool as ever, damn:

Looking forward to that.

There are not words to express how much I hated playing Blitzball.

I remember it being very poorly balanced but I didn’t mind it too much.

Then again I loved the card game in 8, so.. maybe not a lot of legs to stand on.

Triple Triad was fun… the rule changes not so much.

Summary

I remember Blitzball being frustrating at the start because your starting players kinda sucked but scouting out players and building a team was kinda cool… Also it was hilariously abusable by grabbing the ball and hiding near your own goal to run out the time once you were in the lead because the AI didn’t know what to do in that case, if you really wanted to cheese it. It was something like that at least…

I have posted the FF2 Week 1 thread. Don’t forget to monitor the FF2 main thread if you want to follow along:

:joy: love that one
I will remember it, next time I come accross a bunky translation in a Japanese game (which is rather not rare, looking at you, Flowers)

Welcome! Hope you’ll enjoy!

As a new dad, you might need to watch how you spend your time. Make sure that you are doing thing that you enjoy is the most important part, then it’s time well spent. (I did enjoy learning a lot of grammar and kanji before reading and playing, but I know that’s not everyone)

You and I both :star: _ :star:

Spent a summer on the countryside at my grandparents’ house with nothing else to do playing that, quite a good memory!

行くぞ!!
Don’t remember if I finished my side quest with all the music for FFI, oops

First of all: thanks everybody! Since the JP classes will resume this tuesday I will have even less time so i definitely need to pick what I enjoy most :joy: For sure I have to focus on the new grammar and such, but I really wanna stary reading and playing, even if it takes a bit longer. I guess I will stick with Pokemon Omega Ruby for a while (played 3 times already, knowing the context helps too). I will switch to easier games as soon as I complete the league I guess. My goal for next year is to complete at least one game full jp beyond Pokemon Ruby.

Any advice about Lost Odyssey? Or the DQ remakes (1-3)

Ps: I know it is Off Topic, but come on. Everybody knows Lost Odyssey is the real FFXIII :innocent:

There’s a generic Video Game thread if you prefer:

https://community.wanikani.com/t/video-game-thread-what-are-you-playing/13837?u=simias

I don’t mind you posting here about other games but you may get better feedback in that other thread.

Lost Odyssey is like FFX I think, you won’t be able to pause the dialogue which is going to be rough unless your listening skills are really good.

I think the DQ remakes pause for every dialog box, so that’s probably easier.

You also have to factor how familiar you are with the game you’re playing. If you know Lost Odyssey really, really well you may be able to let your memories carry you through the Japanese even if you only understand 10% of the language.

Ah shoot! I completely missed the topic, thank you so much

I did not know that the first entry in the “Mana” series (聖剣伝説 in Japanese) was actually Final Fantasy branded too, even in the original Japanese:

In English the game was simply called “Final Fantasy Adventure”. Its sequel on the Super Famicom would be called 聖剣伝説2 in Japan and “Secret of Mana” abroad, dropping the FF connection.

Funny, the title screen feels very FF like, but for some reason the game reminds me more of Zelda on GB.

It’s extremely Zelda-esque so far, although the world design is not nearly as good.

There’s a more RPG-like XP and stat system however:

Oh I thought it was screenshots from the Internet, are you playing it right now? Fun

I wanted to play Legend of Mana at first in Japanese but then I noticed that it was called 聖剣伝説2 in Japanese and thought “wait that’s a sequel?” and here I am.

Better that than filthy preplay FF3!

Cool! I never actually tried the first entry in the series, very interesting to see what it was like. I had no idea they marketed it as ファイナルファンタジー外伝 – maybe only the first one?

聖剣伝説3 is one of the best RPGs on SFC. Extremely colourful presentation. The class system is still one of the best I’ve seen in a game like this, allowing you to specialize further by picking a second and third class as you progress in levels, each one with its own sprite… unheard of customization at the time. Of course not even close to balanced, video games didn’t yet do that.

It’s also an amazing early example of a romhack translation that allowed a whole generation of people not speaking Japanese to experience it. Thank you Neill Corlett, Lina`chan and Nuku-nuku, whoever you were: Seiken Densetsu 3 Translation - Project History

They’ve since completely remade the game with the title “Trials of Mana”, but this one is so holy to me in its “original” fantranslated incarnation that I haven’t dared to play it yet. Another game for One Day™.

This is an unfortunate example of Nintendo or Square not releasing the original versions on Nintendo Switch Online emulators because remakes exist.
