I am so ready for this one, as soon as we get the date I’m slapping it on my calendar.

I assume a little break before this one is likely too? I was thinking of slotting in SaGa 2 in that time.

I really need to get past week 3 in FF2  maybe this home thread is my wake up call

Goint into this completely blind, I’m so ready!!!

I’ll have a poll for the start date once we’re through FF2.

This is also the first Final Fantasy where participants may opt to play a 3D version, although the script is a bit different and increases the amount of Japanese.

I love the idea of doing the 3d version, since it actually has CHARACTERS, with STORIES and DEVELOPMENT.

But, that 3d version goes soooo slow (at least from my memory), and the japanese increase in difficulty would probably be much greater than the steady increase between pixel remasters.

My compromise is to name the PR characters after the canonical 3d characters.

There is no starting FF3 before you are caught up with NANA.

I have started Naoki! I want to believe.

Nice  it’s a nice chapter, a break from the storm. Then you’re going to have to binge all the heartbreaking ones, good luck :open_mouth:

By the way I think the (original) cover of FF3 is my favorite so far. It’s badass.

What level would you guys recommend I be at to try this? I’m a little over 6 months into my learning and I’ve been taking it decently serious but I don’t want to just get KO’d right away lol. I got through DQ1 (remake) pretty unscathed and built an Anki deck from it from all the various common JRPG terms which I imagine would help. Plus I’ve played through FF6 about a dozen times throughout my life, but given that was the Ted Woolsey translations I’m not actually sure if that will help or hurt…

edit: I am stupid. I read FF3 and assumed, y’know, American FF3.

Yeah it’s Japanese FF3, the original didn’t release outside of Japan before the various remakes and remasters (we’ll get to FF6 eventually…)

If you got through DQ that should be doable, but the pace may be challenging depending on how much you want to commit. If you want to warm up you can try going through the FF1 club we did a few months ago. The pace will probably be roughly 1.5x to 2x the amount of Japanese per week.

You can also look at the spreadsheet in the top post where I already transcribed the first week in full (optional dialogue included), see how you feel about it.

Yeah, I have played 2/3/5 in their various re-release/fan translation forms at some point in my life, but it has been a very long time since I played 3. Which version are you guys planning on playing (I assume the pixel remaster)?

The spreadsheet didn’t make me go screaming for the hills, so I suppose all I can do is try.

People are playing whichever version they desire, which for the most part in these earliest ones has meant the vast majority are on Pixel Remaster with Simias and now me playing Famicom.

Awesome, thanks. I’ll probably start out on the PR. The couple of times I’ve tried playing FC/SFC games, trying to parse the wall of kana makes my head spin. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

I’m gonna go check out the FF1 thread and I’ll report back when you guys start on 3. Thanks for the help!

Oh totally relatable, going without kanji only fairly recently stopped causing me pain. Happy to have you, welcome!

You can post in the existing FF1 threads as you progress if you want. I and I’m sure a bunch of other people still monitor those and will gladly follow your journey!

I love this one! It was the first FF that i finished and I’ve played it many times.

I’ve been going through the FF1 club but i noticed there’s still so much that i don’t know yet XD. Since I know the story of this one I’ll use it to see how much I understand now to compare later.

If any folks want to start working on the vocab ahead of the next game I’ve got a deck for FF3 (Pixel Remaster based) on bunpro!

It’s not divided up by weeks as Simias is still working on the official vocab spreadsheet and breakdown of the gameplay, but instead by location based sections of the game… Basically, I used the order that the Pixel Remasters data keeps the dialog in for grouping.
