Day 8! Finished up 9-Nine for this week with another ~12k characters. It’s been lowkey and character focused this week, so, pretty chill read.

I love survival horror, so slipping in someone playing one of those was fun. 弾薬少ない indeed. Still adding in Ghost Trick on the side too – I realized I was a bit mistaken about the total number of chapters so it’s taking longer than expected. Still could just be a few more days or something if I get enough energy. I’m up to 11 now and really enjoying it! A few sections were slightly annoying (like that prison escape), but it’s worth it.

Good to know, thanks! I think at this point I’m most likely going to just seek out the Japanese sometime, but still, thanks. My wife might want to try it out with the patch; she enjoys the series a lot too. The chance of something in this series being better than the 2 Great Ace Attorney games excites me quite a bit…

2 chapters of 舞妓さんちのまかないさん (Vol 2 Ch. 14 and 15) - ~20 pages
Page 109 of 1日10分初級から始める読解120
A few Tobira entries

Yesterday was more of a listening day than reading for me, as I was out most of the day, but I managed to squeeze some reading before bed. Kiyo in Kyoto (Maiko-san chi no makanai-san) is quite easy to read and the story is light and pleasant, so I keep in on my bed side table. The chapters are short, so I ended up reading 2 before I noticed it.

:cherry_blossom: Ouran - 9 pages (Ch 3 part 1)
:older_woman:t2: あん - 3 pages (Ch 5)

I tend to have some more time on Saturday morning’s to catch up, and I’m glad I advance a bit on Ouran, as I’m behind already. Also got started on the reading of あん for this week. Hoping to advance a bit more on Ouran tomorrow, and maybe some grammar. Perhaps if I have time, I’ll also start on this week’s コンビニ人間.

The way of writing Japanese dates is so smooth. How would that look like with the year? 年 something? With our calendar year or period year?

Year first, with the “units” kanji after the number same as for month and day, e.g. 2004年3月10日. You can also write the numbers in kanji, or use an era date (e.g. 昭和7年 instead of 1932年) if you like.

If I’m correct it would be 2023年7月8日 (I double checked it here: 7月8日 - Wikipedia )m

Edit: @pm215 was a bit faster on their reply !

There was a bit of repeated text from previous weeks before I decided to skip but I did two puzzle rooms so eh I’m sure it evens out anyways so I’ll keep the count as is.

I was busy playing Final Fantasy XVI, if anyone here wonders I played english with japanese audio. Aside from that I was busy doing some things in real life and forgot posting here. But of course I read every day mostly manga magazines and a little bit Parasite Eve novel.

In August I will probably be pretty busy and I don’t know how much I will be able to read then.

11995 pages read

Unfortunately I forgot about Tanabata. Now my wishes don’t come true.

I’ve never been so concentrated while reading on the bus to work. Even at the thought of new bus driver might drive the wrong way like the other one did that one time, I was too busy reading to look at my surroundings. …I might binge Marriage for a bit. Gomen SM club, I’ll neglect you for a bit more.

This is getting really hard again because I’m falling behind with my vocab because I changed it to learn by frequency and not by chronological appearance in the text. I think it was something about things a witch learns, like making medicine and flying on a broom.

July 8

Chugging along through さくらいろ at the usual pace, bringing us to page 239, the end of part 6, and 81% finished! Just one chapter left to go! Also read a couple of pages of 名探偵コナン vol1 and the first page of Harry Potter in Japanese - not sure if I’ll continue that one at this point, but maybe if my next books don’t come by the time I finish this one I’ll take a proper crack at it. Honestly, I should read more manga, it’s a great way to dabble in different genres and get exposure to a wider range of vocab, but I just…love prose lol even if it takes much longer to get through.

today's vocab

加勢(かせい)- reinforcements, assistance
楓糖(ふうとう)- maple syrup
ぶっきらぼう - curt, blunt
照明(しょうめい)- illumination (used in the context of stage/arena lighting here)
しどろもどろ - confused, disordered

Seasons :parasol_on_ground: was about 小暑(しょうしょ) morning glories or 朝顔 in Japanese. They came from China as seeds in the Nara era and were originally used as medicine. Also did you know an alternative name of the princess in the 七夕 story is 朝顔姫?

I didn’t realize this was the last bit of main story line for Ouran :cherry_blossom: . It feels weird to think I’ll be done with the volume next week. I’m hoping to come across the whole series next time I go to the city, since I’m going to a different one this time. If I don’t find it then, I’ll order online from BOOKOFF.

:nail_care: Wow. I didn’t expect Yukako to be worse than in the anime. Also not sure which one Aya is creepier in.

I kinda fell asleep reading Zucca x Zuca :dancer: . It’s too funny and relatable. In one of the bits, the mom finds the daughter’s otaku funeral plans. I don’t plan to have an otaku funeral, but I did tell/message my parents about what to do with my otaku goods in case I have an untimely death lol. I’m glad my friend lent me this. It’s not a series I’d buy I think, but I would definitely read it at a manga cafe or something. I’ll probably finish this volume and then read just a chapter of the other volume since it’s text heavy. I realized that this summer I’ll probably be in 4 simultaneous book clubs (Nausicaa, Ouran, Behind the Super, and a private one) plus doing my JoJo reading. Looking at the rows of books… I don’t think I’ll finish JoJo this year, but hopefully I can ramp up my speed in the fall!

They also often write dates like this: 2023.07.08, sometimes with the optional 0s, sometimes without them. Or like 7.8 if the year isn’t necessary. I’d say using Arabic numerals and periods is probably the most common way I see it written on twitter, at least in the context of pro wrestling, haha (which is a context where dates are frequently mentioned).

I use the “7.8” style for show dates on my translation account because that’s what Mr. Haku did for his translation tweets, and I got used to that format when keyword searching to find old translations and such. That’s by far the most common format used for wrestling show dates, to the point that “イッテンヨン” (1.4) has become an entire thing in itself in Japanese pro wrestling.

The nice thing about the 2023.07.08 format is that it’s pretty intuitively readable to people used to the American style (month/day/year) as well as people who are used to the European style (day/month/year). So I’ve started defaulting to it when posting online for international audiences.

I also started using it for organizing my files because the way computers read numbers, it’ll ensure that your files are in perfect chronological order when you sort them alphabetically (and periods often work better than slashes or hyphens when naming or tagging things).

・7月8日・

Finally, finally, finally I’ve finished Six Four. The end was pretty good, but half if not more of it was just a giant slog. I definitely am not interested in getting this one in Japanese (although keeping people straight mighta been easier in JP. Half the characters have a name starting with the letter M, and at least the kanji and thus the feel would be different, whereas in EN they all just blur into a big blob. Even if the Mi names are all 三, that’s still only a fraction of the total M names. Pretty much any time any M name other than Mikami or Mikumo came up, I was like, “Uh, well, you sure are someone…”) or any of Yokoyama’s other stories tbh. Even if he does mostly write short stories… eh.

I also finished Deep Wizardry, the second novel in Support Your Local Wizard, and in only two days! I’d vaguely remembered parts of the first novel from reading it in high school, but I didn’t remember any part of this. Watch me remember the third though lmao. Anyway this is apparently not just a trilogy like I’d always thought, but a longer series with at least 5 books, so I’m gonna have to find the others at some point too. Augh, and I’m getting more books soon, both JP and EN. If I don’t start reading more of my EN ones again, my to-read pile’s gonna become unwieldy. “Oh, it’s fine, I can read it in a day or two!” only works when you actually read them, Danny!

  • 月刊少女野崎くん issue 39-40 + おまけ, finishing vol 4! (I didn’t read the character profiles, though)
  • アオのハコ ch 10

I had wanted to finish the first half of さいとう高校 today too, I think ch 7 was only 31 pages, but alas, I didn’t even touch it. So many things I wanna read, only so many hours in a day!

:rocket: 俺は星間国家の悪徳領主! 11 12.5 chapter +1.5

Thankfully バガボンド went from 2 dudes staring at each other to 2 dudes bathing, with so much dialogue I could finally slow down. I guess reading pages without text is indeed faster than stumbling through archaic dialogues with historical references.

2 dudes in a bath:
