Read about half of part 6 of さくらいろの季節, which started off with a HECK of an escalation, the bullying of 直終 going from dirt poured in her locker and mean prank calls to a sudden stabbing attempt with basically no buildup, so that was a fun bit of whiplash that kept me reading for a while - only stopped because my next book order is slated to come while I’m at work tomorrow, and I’m going to need something to read during my lunch break Also made it through about 50 pages of 名探偵コナン vol. 1, with very few lookups (admittedly mostly because I’ve seen all of this animated before so I’ve already got a general idea of what’s happening). Thinking I’ll finish off さくらいろ tomorrow, then tackle コンビニ人間 as my next project!

July 8th: [Home Post]

Not really going to update my reading list today since I tried something different and read a few pages of Puniru is a Cute Slime. The first few pages were fine, but then I got kicked around on the next few panels. I had a lot of vocabulary lookups and a grammar point that I did not recognize; however, all in all my first crack at reading native material went alright. Obviously, I have much further to go, but I’m happy with how much progress I have made so far! I will jump back into Crystal Hunters again tomorrow.

告白 86% - 100%

Finally finished 告白!! I lost all my motivation after falling behind on the book club in exam season and barely touched it for a while, but I can move on now

告白 was definitely a big challenge for me, especially reading at the book club pace in the first few weeks. Even though I mostly just ‘got the gist’ of everything, probably with a considerable loss of nuance, I still enjoyed reading it. Now I can watch the movie and get a perhaps fuller picture of the story.

I think コンビニ人間 should be somewhat easier after reading 告白, so now I can try to catch up with the IBC Primer club… (as well as finishing 世界から猫が消えたなら, of course)

Book read: About 8% of 迷子になっていた幼女を助けたら、お隣に住む美少女留学生が家に遊びに来るようになった件について. I am now at 15.99%. The reviews on Learn Natively were right: a lot of repeated words, which is good, but the story itself so far is a little dull.

6 pages ふらいんぐうぃっち today! (which is not a lot, yes, but since I leveled up and wanted to also try and fight against the newly build lesson mountain, I feel like it’s still an okay~ish day)
Sometimes I really want to read more, but sometimes I just can’t convince myself to keep reading despite being interested in the story. There should be more time in the day, 24 hours is not nearly enough.
Let’s go on the streets and riot for more time or less need for sleep

(Since I have time for english manga though, maybe I should just try and get better so I can read everything in japanese without getting tired, problem solved?)

another short read today, just the one fate episode (ペンギー’s, do people really find this kind of thing cute??) and another (25 min) section of k2’s majima story. this was actually probably about half pure reading anyway, so definitely worth it! i really liked the latter half of the scene with makoto, majima only says one line in that entire scene but his facial animations say it all.

I’m now on track with the reading of Ouran, it’s the last part of volume 1 this week and I’m hoping to finish on time. Also managed to start on this week’s コンビニ人間, I read about 1/3 of the chapter, which was quite pleasant to read (though I encountered some troublesome sentences).
I’m working a bit on grammar this evening, I’ll be done with Ch 1 of Tobira soon (maybe in a day or two). Tomorrow I’m getting back to あん and hoping to get more listening practice during the day.

The stars aligned today
Saw 内緒 for the first time in this week’s reading of ちいさな森のオオカミちゃん, and it was repeated in the chapter I read of よつばと! (chapter 25). Was quite a nice and light one, after last chapter’s fishing trip! Also there was several mentions of a ラブレター and a fun グッバイマイラブ so now I think I will remember what ラブ is
Really makes me appreciate reading, it cements vocabulary for me when it’s used in context. I’ve been trying recently to SRS with jpdb before starting on my next VN, but despite the example sentences, I don’t feel that it’s context enough to be retaining words that way. Maybe I’ll just jump in the VN and learn the words chronollogically instead of like now by frequency…

Skipped Friday due to social obligations and didn’t get much reading done yesterday, just a partial reread of ヤニ吸う volume 2.

風の谷のナウシカ１ (p. 35-71)

Ok, despite the gentle start this is definitely above my comfortable reading level. It took me over four hours to read this bit. My transcript blew up from less than 1000 lines to 2300+, too many new words to even list here and towards the end my brain was just signalling that it’s a bit too much now. Luckily the same words keep reappearing, built in SRS! 親衛隊しんえいたい is definitely already at guru level.

This seems to be exactly where the bigger plot starts to come into play. Also, by being forced to take it slow I get to spend longer with the gorgeous art. It’s just crazy how much effort has gone into each page. You can quite clearly tell 宮﨑 loves to draw forests, bugs and aeroplanes, otherwise they wouldn’t be always in such exquisite detail.

Day 9! Was more busy today, but I got in a couple hours of reading 999 for the VN club. We’re nearing the end and this was by far the worst section as a language learner. It’s really not spoilers other than giving away the location of a puzzle room, but I’ll collapse it to be safe:

Puzzles already don’t cooperate with the texthooker so that’s a pain, but usually the banter is pretty short and easy enough that it’s no problem. Unfortunately, this one takes place in a library, or perhaps book storage room of sorts, with what seem to be dozens of shelves. There are books mixed in that you need to solve the puzzle so you have to check out all of the shelves. And every time people read off a book that’s located there, mostly science related, then comment on it a bit. So what you get is a mountain of basically contextless titles and subjects that are pretty technical. I was tired already, and after a bit, have to admit I kind of stopped bothering. The normal reading went fine today though.

I really wanted to finish their meeting about the ring, so I read for an hour, took a break, then read for another hour. The way Seigi keeps calling out Richard’s beauty kills me - first he’s attracting everyone’s attention like the panda at the Ueno zoo, then he’s a walking advertisement for men’s suits, like please Seigi I stg He does seem like quite the elegant gentleman though, I have to say I have such a weakness for pretty gentlemen characters you guys, help me

Also I think I figured out at least one reason why the grammar keeps confusing me - sometimes people are talking within quotation marks and other times they are talking but without quotation marks, and it’s taking me forever to figure out what’s going on when people are saying things not in quotation marks (particularly when it’s happening in the middle of a conversation that is in quotation marks) Like it’s paraphrasing what was said, but not “saying it” in quotes. I think. Is kind of what’s going on. Hopefully.

Seasons said today is 納(な)7豆(とう)10 day and gave information about お中元(ちゅうげん), which is the season that Obon is in if I understand correctly. There’s a lot of ancestral worship.

Zucca continued to be relatable, but I had to tap out after just 20ish pages. I was getting tired and the handwriting was starting to wear on me. I’m still determined to finish it though! The other book is all typed, so that part isn’t a barrier at least.

JoJo was so-so. I respect Yukako less as a character with this arc although it was interesting to see Araki reference Klimt’s “The Kiss.” The anime seems to have shown a close up or panned, so the form was a bit harder to read as a reference.

Once I finish Zucca, I plan to do my Nausicaa reading. It’s a somewhat busy week, but hopefully I can stay on pace for everything!
