🦸‍♂️ SUPERMAN vs飯 スーパーマンのひとり飯 Volume 1 (51% ➨ 54%)

It feels as if I’ve seen 「君」 more in this chapter than I have in all my Japanese manga reading up to this point.

I think I’ll just continue reading Honzuki until the end of summer challenge and then read Loopers and Spice & Wolf.

Over the past few days I was pretty much focused on Flesh&Blood 3 (although I missed one day of the reading challenge altogether due to bad planning :woman_shrugging:) and managed to finish the book within 13 days:

It took me almost 24 hours to read it, which equals a reading speed of slightly less than 9 pages / hour. This is an improvement compared to the previous volume, but I guess it’s mainly because there was not as much history-heavy stuff in this volume? …

Anyways, I guess now I need to catch up on my book clubs
Kafka, TUGUMI and Spice&Wolf are waiting for me

i’m starting to really enjoy this 3rd volume of the やが君 LN.

the first volume was honestly a slog. i was struggling so much with the grammar, with the long sentences, with the vocab (less with the vocab than with the rest, but still). there were some moments which were really enjoyable, but for the most part it was a slog.

the second volume was sad. it was slowly getting easier to read, but we know from the manga and anime that it’s not going to be a happy time for Sayaka. i think that’s why i put it aside for a good long while, and read a bunch of manga in the meantime. because not only was it still hard work, but it was also sad.

but i’m glad i picked it up again (besides just being stubborn about it), because this third volume has such a different mood. we see Sayaka opening up. she’s at the most cheerful she’s been in the whole series. we’re seeing new love grow. it’s still a slog, but the reading has gotten a lot easier, and i understand a lot more of the nuances besides just the basic plot/events.

(also, we learn that Touko has her own place now, and apparently Yuu regularly spends the night… so happy for them!)

August 28th!

Today I read the next chapter of Teasing Master Takagi-san. It focused on some of the other characters instead of Takagi and Nishikata, which is always fun. I always love seeing a bit more of the wider world in stories.
Definitely going to have to pick up some of the spinoff series for this once I reach the end of the main series.

Well I was surprisingly feeling not as poorly as yesterday, but then I had tea this afternoon, and uh, that’s not true anymore. I didn’t think tea even had enough caffeine to make me shaky and/or sleepy. I guess any amount of caffeine isn’t good when I’m more than usually tired. Luckily I already got some reading in before then: the last 2 chapters of よつばと! vol 10 and the first of vol 12. This one only has 6 chapters instead of the usual 7, but the camping chapters appear to be unusually long.

Summary post

Been a while since I checked in! Still going very strong with the challenge, and I’ve somehow managed to keep my head above the water with the Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling translations, though boy it has been a lot of work these past couple weeks…

In the past week or so, I finished translating a few shows. Here’s TJPW’s August 14 Korakuen Hall show.

Here’s a photo from the show, featuring Max the Impaler throwing Shoko Nakajima, TJPW’s resident 147cm Big Kaiju and current singles champion. Max will be coming back to TJPW for their next big show in October, and I’m really pumped for that .

I also finished the translation for the (thankfully much shorter) August 21 show!

This show featured a very conventional wrestling match wherein Pom Harajuku tried to exploit Miu Watanabe’s fear of オバケ by bringing out a wig and then trying to dangle a block of こんにゃく in Miu’s face. Thanks to our sort of year-round TJPW “book club” in the pro wrestling thread, I learned that こんにゃく is apparently often used in this manner in haunted houses in Japan simply because it’s scary to have something slimy hit you in the face.

I had only a single day where I didn’t have any show translations to do, but I read a little bit more of the glossary section of 新日本プロレス英語入門. Here are some of my observations.

All in all, once again, I managed to smash my previous record of most characters translated in a short period of time. Between the August 13 and August 14 Korakuen shows, I translated over 11,000 characters in just over a week .

I’m proud of TJPW for getting to a point where they can run Korakuen Hall three times in one month (in the past, they were lucky to be able to run the venue three times in one year), but boy does it make for more work for me as the translator, haha. I’m looking forward to what’s coming next, but am also looking forward to things winding down a little so that I can take it a little easier.

I’ll hopefully be back in a few days to make a wrap-up post for the challenge!

About 1600 characters, no time for more. This chapter is long so will probably take a bit.

Just 10 pages today, I continued with 天使の傷跡 and was largely slowed down by uncommon kanji. 忽ち anyone? How about ページ being written 頁? (I actually didn’t need to look that one up since it was burned into my brain during my failed attempt with RTK).
I still enjoy learning old kanji so it’s fun, but one of my tutors warned me to not emulate the way any of these characters speak because it’s apparently very old fashioned. I suspect my love of old Japanese books and media will eventually seep into my spoken/written Japanese despite my efforts to the contrary…

This makes me think of how putting someone’s hand into a bowl of peeled grapes and telling them it’s “eyeballs” is a classic. :joy:

I really wanna sit down and just read for a while but I keep not setting myself up to do that :joy: the struggles of obligations and schedules! I did read a bit more 跡を消す so there’s that, I’m just in kind of a weird spot with reading right now :man_shrugging: hope to do better soon!

I like how even though the dialogue is all in Japanese, things like Clark’s article he’s writing on his computer monitor, and Lois’s Instagram posting, use English. (In the next panel, Jimmy reads it out in Japanese, so readers don’t miss out on anything.)

image

If this is Clark’s phone, I hope he keeps it in airplane mode while outside of Kansas, or else someone working for the phone company can notice Clark’s cell connection jumping from Kansas to Tokyo.

Well, maybe he can say he was using a VPN.

image

After working past lunch, Clark goes Superman and heads to Japan to find most places are closed for the night. That means he’s stuck with picking up something at a convenience store.

He’s shopped at this chain in Metropolis, so he knows there won’t be much of interest here, and yet inside it’s like nothing he’s experienced before. There’s even a place to sit and dine.

image

Stopping by the store’s magazine rack, we see Superman’s version of ()()み: standing and using x-ray vision.

image

But he’s here for food shopping, not reading, so off he goes.

That’s quite the order for one person.

image

It is an “eating food” manga, after all. (I’ll never understand the appeal.)

I laid down to rest my feet and back while I read and I near instantly felt like garbage  I wasn’t planning to go to bed then even, I had just spent a lot of time earlier cleaning. I decided to cut my reading accordingly though. I didn’t feel great after waking up, but I felt considerably better

Started 青ブタ 8, and trying to play Persona 3 when I can. I get to a full moon once a week on average so far, so I am expecting this pace until I finish. I want to get back to my reread of Berserk, but when Miura explains things the pace comes to a grinding hault. Which isn’t a problem per-se, but I expect to finish a volume in an hour or two but the more wordy volumes take 3 or 4 hours sometimes. Plus I can’t read it on my commute, which limits my time with it even more.

Anyone knows of a fantasy novel / light novel, or even manga that follows the Maou’s side of the story and conflict? I have a thing for antagonists.

Got to Ch 1 pt 2 of 青ブタ8 and finished Berserk volume 15. Tomorrow I will definitely get to part 3 and try to read volume 16 of berserk. However it’s not the end of the world if I don’t finish berserk 16, it’s my “fun challenge” for the day to see how far I’ve come since I read last year.

Today: よつば& Vol 2 p. 139-145. I would have liked to spend all day reading. (Funny how, when I had spent more than a month studying Japanese for many hours every day, I started to get a little tired of it, but now, the moment I can’t do that any more, there’s nothing I’d rather do.)

New Words

ざりがに crayfish
田んぼ (たんぼ) paddy field
プルプル trembling, shivering
一旦 (いったん) once, for a brief time (I have never seen this kanji before; I find it very cute!)
こそこそ secretly, stealthily

Today a video I was watching recommended the 日常 series to beginning readers. Does anyone here have thoughts on it? (Any excuse to buy more books…)

日常 from the little I read at Book Off seems pretty accessible. I had a hard time with the anime a couple years ago. But I’m sure you could read the manga if you can get through よつば.

Hmm. Not a great reading day. Should have been better.

Thought I was going to have to drive about 90 mins each way to get something I need for tomorrow. Found it down the road. But then had work and someone annoyed me so couldn’t focus on reading.

Anyway, read about a page of Tugumi, and went over a page of Spy Family, so better than nothing.
