went into my bookwalker backlog and picked up ワニ男爵(だんしゃく) and read chapter one. i was expecting it to be entirely comedy and/or food, which it was, except for the random wildlife snippet in the middle. but, that did send me down a rabbit hole of hippos fighting off crocodiles/alligators and the diet of baboons (turns out they can eat small antelope and monkeys! not their main source of food tho).

Kinda cooling off on 声優ラジオ - Its attempts to get me to sympathize with hardcore parasocial idol/seiyuu otaku are ineffective at best and downright irritating at worst. Getting personally offended that a seiyuu’s ‘showbiz personality’ is different from their real personality is frankly ridiculous-- doesn’t Japan have their whole concept of 建前?

The book I’m currently reading is from Amazon and they’ve updated their Kindle books to no longer be rippable as epubs so I’m forced to be stuck with the Kindle reader (which is fine, I guess… just annoying) and imprecise percentages.

Word of the Day: 憤怒(ふんぬ) - anger; rage; resentment. It just sounds like an onomatopoeia, honestly. I can imagine an anime character going ふんぬ~ with steam coming out of their ears.

Been extremely busy these past few weeks with my job and life, but I somehow managed to retain a routine of studying Japanese, with reading and listening everyday, although with a bit slower pace.

I managed to finish the light novel 夏へのトンネル、さよならの出口. Lots of new vocabulary and quite an interesting story, so it was a good and useful reading experience.
I’ve also been reading リコリス・リコイル manga on and off these weeks. It is great for relaxing, and the individual stories in the manga aren’t that long so I can finish one story pretty quickly.

From now on I plan to start reading コンビニ人間. From the older posts I’ve seen here, it looks like it will be a good story so I will give it a try

One of the more frustrating things about reading Japanese: when you see a kanji and know that you know it but can’t think of the reading or the meaning so you look it up only to find it was something you learnt ages ago.

芝翫茶しかんちゃ - Shikan Brown
(芝翫「しかん」was the haiku name of the Osaka-born Kabuki actor: 三代目 中村 歌右衛門「さんだいめ なかむら うたえもん」Nakamura Utaemon III. Since it was one of his favourite colours to wear it became known as ‘Shikan Brown’. And in case you are wondering how many more Nakamura Utaemon’s there are the latest Nakamura Utaemon VI died in 2001 (and was a very famous and well renowned Kabuki actor). I couldn’t find if there was a 7th generation, but perhaps he is biding his time for the right time to return.)

Ngl, I’ve been kind of crushing it in the “doing things I’ve been putting off” department the past couple days. If I had like one more day off, I’d be able to fully clean my apartment too Should I have prioritized that? Maybe, but I’m taking the position that all of these things needed to be done at some point so anything done is good

Omg, I finally finished Penguin Highway

I have some thoughts (mostly spoiler-free, the spoilery parts are further hidden)

I have to say I’m sort of just…relieved it’s over, I feel like this book was so laggy - if my reading speed were any slower, I would have given up before I reached the end, I think. As it was, I feel like I started skim-reading more toward the end (to the extent that I can do that) because I just wanted to get to the end already. The climax was fairly interesting (and involved a lot of penguins ) but I was kind of left with the feeling of…having expected more, for such a long journey to get there. I don’t know. The “big reveal” of Onee-san not being human didn’t feel that dramatic because like…yes? we’ve known something is weird about her for like 300 pages now? And we don’t really get any answers beyond that - like, what was she? Why was she there? I feel like I expected something more to be revealed that would tie things all together, and “Onee-san isn’t human” was not enough to do that for me. It just felt like something I already knew.

I don’t know, I’m kind of surprised I didn’t like it more. But I think part of the problem was that I came in expecting something more dramatic and/or plot-driven and this was not that. Like, half the book was not dealing with the supernatural stuff much at all, and the supernatural elements were sitting around in the background of the story for so long that it all began to feel a bit mundane. I expected more to happen, with a premise of “random penguins show up in town.” I do think I would have liked it more if it were so darn long and drawn out, I can definitely see myself liking this better as a movie.

Here’s something neat, though - when I started this book, my average reading speed was ~0.14 pages/min (so ~7 minutes per page). Looking at the last few reading sessions, my average reading speed has been ~0.31 pages/min (so ~3 minutes per page). That’s like…double the reading speed Hopefully I did that math correctly I hope this is actually a sign of me getting faster and not just a sign of me getting familiar with the book’s language and wanting to skim toward the end

I’ve read 2 of the 3 assigned sections for this week’s レベル７. Might finish it tonight, see how I feel. I also read the first chapter of a 東野圭吾 short story in an anthology I have just for kicks, and then sat and pondered what is the difference between a short story and a short novel when you have chapters It doesn’t help that this short story is ~70 pages long and 推し is ~100 and a novel…with no chapters.

Also reading 東野圭吾 again after so long as interesting. Now that I’ve read a lot of authors and some authors multiple times I can really sense their ‘voice’ when I read their writing. A ‘hello old friend’ kind of feeling, so long as you like the author, I suppose.

Kinda cooling off on 声優ラジオ - Its attempts to get me to sympathize with hardcore parasocial idol/seiyuu otaku are ineffective at best and downright irritating at worst. Getting personally offended that a seiyuu’s ‘showbiz personality’ is different from their real personality is frankly ridiculous-- doesn’t Japan have their whole concept of 建前?

Many things I’ve seen in idol culture suggest a bizarre sense of entitlement. I think any ‘visible’ time they’re expected/demanded to be in-character.

Yeah, I kind of had that same feeling reading it. I read it during a phase of ‘I will read the popular books to see why they’re popular’ and came away from that one thinking it was probably popular mostly due to being a easily accessible, lengthier children’s book. It’s cute, but it drags, and I very much felt the difference between the intended audience (preteen boys) and me

• preview of 夏へとトンネル、さよならの出口. It’s funny, it used 快適 and 火照る in short succession, and those are both words I did lessons for fairly recently.
• アオのハコ ch 1. Excited to finally start this! I don’t like only reading partial chapters with manga, so I read the full first chapter, and now I’m a week ahead.
• the rest of パパと親父のウチご飯 vol 1. It’s adorable. I’m kinda wishing I’d gotten more (I think there are 13 volumes? Plus the spin-off that focuses more on the fathers) but I already got quite a bit. Maybe when I use the points obtained from this order I’ll get at least some of the rest (and hopefully there’ll be a coupon/promotion at the time too)

Some vocab of note:

校了 (こうりょう) [n., する verb] proofreading completed. And here I learn 校 doesn’t just mean “school.”
帰省 (きせい) [n., する verb] returning to one’s hometown; returning to one’s hometown and visiting one’s parents. This showed up in a Lingo Mastery story and was defined merely as “going home” or something else unnuanced like that, but I never looked it up to see if it was specific-use or just returning home in general since I read it early on, when J-J dictionaries still intimidated me. But it showed up in パパ飯 today, so I looked it up and now I finally have my answer.
アシ [n.] means of transportation. This is the same あし as 足, though it appeared here as furi for 車.

キノの旅１pages 86-90. Finished ch 3! I think I’d have the same reaction and just not say anything after meeting that second and third guy working on the railroad… Wow. Funny, but also reminding me of the headache of stupidity in management at real workplaces…

東京卍リベンジャーズ １Ch 1-4 I’ve read the first volume once before but it was a while ago and I just got the next five volumes (in color!) so I felt like I needed to reread this first to remember what’s going on exactly.

Read:

• 四月は君の噓 ch 37, 38 - not quite a volume today, but i’m not giving up!
• I LIED was too stressed to sleep, so finished ch 39 and 40. done with volume 10! These chapters were lighter on text, so a little bit quicker to read
• LIED AGAIN, did all of volume 11. There wasn’t really a good spot to stop and I wasn’t gonna sleep tonight anyway, probably

So, somehow, despite all odds and being behind 12 chapters with 3 days left, I have finished all of 四月は君の嘘 in 四月! with a day to spare even!

Heavy spoilers:

like actually for real, if you haven’t read/watched or aren’t familiar with the plot yet this is like at the crux of the story

There’s a moment in chapter 40 that I don’t think i’d ever noticed in the anime: when watari and kousei are going to visit kaori in the hospital and she is having some kind of seizure when they arrive, there’s a full page of panels watching kaori’s hands as they grip the bars on the hospital bed and then go limp before they’re kicked out. In the anime I don’t remember if she does this, but the very last thing she does with her hand before it goes limp in the manga is clutch the bar like a violin bow

I only read a little bit of the Fate Kaleid Prisma Drei manga vol. 1. The manga is not hard but there are some rarer words used especially by Gilgamesh, which I had to look up.

read another chapter of ワニ男爵(だんしゃく) and uh, i know manga of this kind can be formulaic but this was almost identical to the previous chapter. at least there was more good animal art (except for the rabbit, he can look pretty uncanny sometimes).
