went into my bookwalker backlog and picked up ã¯ãç·çµ and read chapter one. i was expecting it to be entirely comedy and/or food, which it was, except for the random wildlife snippet in the middle. but, that did send me down a rabbit hole of hippos fighting off crocodiles/alligators and the diet of baboons (turns out they can eat small antelope and monkeys! not their main source of food tho).
Days 27-28 Progress:
声åªã©ãžãªã®ãŠã©ãªã¢ã äºå·» - 82.86% â 99.21% (宿)
æšãã«ç±æçæåºãããäŒç€ŸäŒãã äºå·» - 0% â 9%
Kinda cooling off on 声åªã©ãžãª - Its attempts to get me to sympathize with hardcore parasocial idol/seiyuu otaku are ineffective at best and downright irritating at worst. Getting personally offended that a seiyuuâs âshowbiz personalityâ is different from their real personality is frankly ridiculous-- doesnât Japan have their whole concept of 建å?
The book Iâm currently reading is from Amazon and theyâve updated their Kindle books to no longer be rippable as epubs so Iâm forced to be stuck with the Kindle reader (which is fine, I guess⊠just annoying) and imprecise percentages.
Word of the Day: æ€æ - anger; rage; resentment. It just sounds like an onomatopoeia, honestly. I can imagine an anime character going ãµãã¬~ with steam coming out of their ears.
Still taking care of the dachshund so here is a picture of him:
Been extremely busy these past few weeks with my job and life, but I somehow managed to retain a routine of studying Japanese, with reading and listening everyday, although with a bit slower pace.
I managed to finish the light novel å€ãžã®ãã³ãã«ããããªãã®åºå£. Lots of new vocabulary and quite an interesting story, so it was a good and useful reading experience.
Iâve also been reading ãªã³ãªã¹ã»ãªã³ã€ã« manga on and off these weeks. It is great for relaxing, and the individual stories in the manga arenât that long so I can finish one story pretty quickly.
From now on I plan to start reading ã³ã³ãã人é. From the older posts Iâve seen here, it looks like it will be a good story so I will give it a try ![]()

One of the more frustrating things about reading Japanese: when you see a kanji and know that you know it but canât think of the reading or the meaning so you look it up only to find it was something you learnt ages ago.
Todayâs Bonus Colours
(èç¿«ãããããwas the haiku name of the Osaka-born Kabuki actor: äžä»£ç® äžæ æå³è¡éãããã ãã ãªããã ããããããNakamura Utaemon III. Since it was one of his favourite colours to wear it became known as âShikan Brownâ. And in case you are wondering how many more Nakamura Utaemonâs there are the latest Nakamura Utaemon VI died in 2001 (and was a very famous and well renowned Kabuki actor). I couldnât find if there was a 7th generation, but perhaps he is biding his time for the right time to return.)
(This brown is slightly darker, and not quite as red, as the crimson cypress colour, but they are both very similar)
(Kakishibu is a type of dye that is made from the fermentation of astringent persimmons, which are picked when still green then mushed into a liquid and left to ferment. Itâs a medium reddy-orange brown colour.)

April 29th!
Today I read chapter 69 of Mitsuboshi Colors. It was a really fun chapter, and I learned some new words in it which are all kind of relevant to my job.

Things I did instead include repotting two of my plants, watering all of my plants (which is like 30 plants, for those who donât know

Ngl, Iâve been kind of crushing it in the âdoing things Iâve been putting offâ department the past couple days. If I had like one more day off, Iâd be able to fully clean my apartment too
Should I have prioritized that? Maybe, but Iâm taking the position that all of these things needed to be done at some point so anything done is good ![]()

Omg, I finally finished Penguin Highway ![]()
I have to say Iâm sort of justâŠrelieved itâs over, I feel like this book was so laggy - if my reading speed were any slower, I would have given up before I reached the end, I think. As it was, I feel like I started skim-reading more toward the end (to the extent that I can do that) because I just wanted to get to the end already. The climax was fairly interesting (and involved a lot of penguins
) but I was kind of left with the feeling ofâŠhaving expected more, for such a long journey to get there. I donât know. The âbig revealâ of Onee-san not being human didnât feel that dramatic because likeâŠyes? weâve known something is weird about her for like 300 pages now? And we donât really get any answers beyond that - like, what was she? Why was she there? I feel like I expected something more to be revealed that would tie things all together, and âOnee-san isnât humanâ was not enough to do that for me. It just felt like something I already knew.
I donât know, Iâm kind of surprised I didnât like it more. But I think part of the problem was that I came in expecting something more dramatic and/or plot-driven and this was not that. Like, half the book was not dealing with the supernatural stuff much at all, and the supernatural elements were sitting around in the background of the story for so long that it all began to feel a bit mundane. I expected more to happen, with a premise of ârandom penguins show up in town.â I do think I would have liked it more if it were so darn long and drawn out, I can definitely see myself liking this better as a movie.
Hereâs something neat, though - when I started this book, my average reading speed was ~0.14 pages/min (so ~7 minutes per page). Looking at the last few reading sessions, my average reading speed has been ~0.31 pages/min (so ~3 minutes per page). Thatâs likeâŠdouble the reading speed
Hopefully I did that math correctly I hope this is actually a sign of me getting faster and not just a sign of me getting familiar with the bookâs language and wanting to skim toward the end ![]()

Iâve read 2 of the 3 assigned sections for this weekâs ã¬ãã«ïŒ. Might finish it tonight, see how I feel. I also read the first chapter of a æ±éååŸ short story in an anthology I have just for kicks, and then sat and pondered what is the difference between a short story and a short novel when you have chapters
It doesnât help that this short story is ~70 pages long and æšã is ~100 and a novelâŠwith no chapters.
Also reading æ±éååŸ again after so long as interesting. Now that Iâve read a lot of authors and some authors multiple times I can really sense their âvoiceâ when I read their writing. A âhello old friendâ kind of feeling, so long as you like the author, I suppose.
Many things Iâve seen in idol culture suggest a bizarre sense of entitlement. I think any âvisibleâ time theyâre expected/demanded to be in-character.
Yeah, I kind of had that same feeling reading it. I read it during a phase of âI will read the popular books to see why theyâre popularâ and came away from that one thinking it was probably popular mostly due to being a easily accessible, lengthier childrenâs book. Itâs cute, but it drags, and I very much felt the difference between the intended audience (preteen boys) and me ![]()

I read another chapter from Ruri Dragon. So close to completing my first manga (although only the first volume)!
ã»ïŒæïŒïŒæ¥ã»
æ ¡äº (ããããã) [n., ãã verb] proofreading completed. And here I learn æ ¡ doesnât just mean âschool.â
åž°ç (ããã) [n., ãã verb] returning to oneâs hometown; returning to oneâs hometown and visiting oneâs parents. This showed up in a Lingo Mastery story and was defined merely as âgoing homeâ or something else unnuanced like that, but I never looked it up to see if it was specific-use or just returning home in general since I read it early on, when J-J dictionaries still intimidated me. But it showed up in ãã飯 today, so I looked it up and now I finally have my answer.
ã¢ã· [n.] means of transportation. This is the same ãã as 足, though it appeared here as furi for è».

Read:
So, somehow, despite all odds and being behind 12 chapters with 3 days left, I have finished all of åæã¯åã®å in åæ! with a day to spare even!
like actually for real, if you havenât read/watched or arenât familiar with the plot yet this is like at the crux of the story
Thereâs a moment in chapter 40 that I donât think iâd ever noticed in the anime: when watari and kousei are going to visit kaori in the hospital and she is having some kind of seizure when they arrive, thereâs a full page of panels watching kaoriâs hands as they grip the bars on the hospital bed and then go limp before theyâre kicked out. In the anime I donât remember if she does this, but the very last thing she does with her hand before it goes limp in the manga is clutch the bar like a violin bow
Good Words:
ãã¡ãã€ã ㌠to flirt with
ãžã£ã¡ãã ㌠unconcerned (about) (context was used kind of like å¹³æ°)
ããã (足æ»ã) ㌠to struggle (to escape an adverse situation); to strive; to make every effortâ

æ§ããïŒã²ãããïŒãŒ moderate; reserved; conservative; humble; mild-mannered
äžåäžæïŒãã£ããã¡ããïŒãŒ alternating between happiness and anxiety; swinging between joy and sorrow

read another chapter of ã¯ãç·çµ and uh, i know manga of this kind can be formulaic but this was almost identical to the previous chapter. at least there was more good animal art (except for the rabbit, he can look pretty uncanny sometimes).
