I tried to read 夜カフェ again today. A few weeks ago it was still too difficult for me to read comfortably. Today was different. I still didn’t get every word, but I always understood what was going on and what was being said, without looking up any words/kanji. I love this feeling when you realize all this studying is paying off!

And the アオのハコ book club finally started! (But our book club leader seems to be missing at the moment ) I loved how the manga started and I am really curious whether it will continue this way. I guess I’ll find out during the next weeks. I am definitely looking forward to it!

And then I am still reading Conan. I will edit the page where I finished reading later/tomorrow, because I still intend to read some pages after posting.

Some rambling about 出

Of particular interest to me are all the words containing 出 like 日の出, 飛(と)び出(だ)し or 取(と)り出(だ)し, as the Kanji is a bit unintuitive - see the meaning “exit” learned on WaniKani for example. I’ve always had trouble wrapping my head around these vocabs using that definition, until I consulted a German dictionary and saw that “origin” or “source” was also part of it’s meaning.

So the reason the words containing this Kanji seemed so inconsistend was because there is no one-to-one translation and I have to take it as it’s own, new word. Which is why I pay so much attention to words containing it. Also there’s the grammar reading I did for it, which just put another layer of meaning on top of it…

I finished reading the Fate Kaleid Prisma Drei manga vol.1. I can’t remember it that well but I think the first manga volume covered the first two or three episodes of the anime.

I started マグナムリリィ today because I totally needed to add yet another book to my reading list… I’m already a third of the way done. And yesterday and today I got back into reading 寄生獣. I have quite a bit to do today so it’s not likely I’ll read any more… but if I do I’ll edit this post

And since it’s the last day of April, here’s a summary of this month and my plans for May!

April is never a good time for me to get anything done. Even though finals week is in the beginning of May, for some reason there’s a tendency at my college to have finals during the week before the official finals week, which means the week before that is dead week, and that means I’m really busy all through April trying to get schoolwork done. In other words… no time for reading But May will be a good time for me to catch up with Zero Escape and 僕が愛したすべての君へ!

Plans for May

Like I said above, going to focus on Zero Escape and 僕が愛したすべての君へ since those are my current clubs I’m in. I’m not too far behind in ZE, and that’s an easy one for me to catch up with, but I’m pretty far back with 僕が愛したすべての君へ so I’ll have to put a lot of energy into that one… To be honest I’m not really enjoying 僕が愛したすべての君へ but I’m at least interested enough in the story that I still want to keep reading. So I will use May to try to catch up with both of these clubs!

Other than that, I’d like to finish ふしぎ駄菓子屋 銭天堂１ and マグナムリリィ１. Both are easy so I’m sure I’ll finish those quickly. 寄生獣２ would be nice to finish too but tbh my interest in that manga comes and goes so we’ll see.

I mentioned earlier I’d like to wait til summer to get back to モブサイコ１００, by that I meant summer break not actual summer. I’m moving towards the end of May and I’d love to start reading it in my new apartment!

April really flew by. This was prior to the Spring Challenge but in March I read half of この本を盗む者は before I decided it wasn’t for me. Then I read two volumes of 薬屋のひとりごと now in April. Including the Winter Challenge, that’s 5,5 novels so far this year. New record compared to earlier first quarter of the year for me.

April Review

This month, I read:
君の名は『まんが』- Books 1-2 complete, 328 pages
ナルト - Chapters 1-2 (some of 3), 87 pages
ハイキュー！- (some of Ch. 1) - 12 pages
色々な Academic 日本語 - 200+ pages

This month has been quite heavy for me, in terms of life life-ing in deeply difficult ways, as well as academia smacking me around a bit when I expected the opposite. I lost my momentum in fiction soon after the first week of April simply due to pressing matters, and I could immediately feel how much harder learning in Japanese class became when I wasn’t engaging in reading for pleasure outside of the classroom.

However, I was able to regain a bit of freedom this past week and have really enjoyed finishing the month strong for the reading challenge. I couldn’t believe how many pages of 君 I’ve read when I calculated it out above - I still have the final book (Book 3 with 3 chapters) to complete before the story is finished. Sooo exciting!! Reading fiction certainly makes academic translation work far more tolerable.

ずーっとペルソナ5ザ・ロイヤルをプレイした。やばかった。夢中になちゃて全然アップデートさせなかった。以外の勉強しなかったからあまりよくないと思った。もうすぐ真エンディングの必要物をゲットする。明智はランキングがレベル6だし、かすみのレベルがＭＡＸだし、丸喜先生は9/20までランクアップが出来ないんですが絶対する！

多分今からもっと情報を共有すると私のポストが面白くなるかもん。

First month of the challenge done!

My only real goal going into this challenge was to finish all of ylia in april. It was a bit of crunch at the end, you can see i was reading a little bit slower during the middle part of the month, but that’s still a huge success!

I read more than double the number of manga pages in april than I did in march (1052 pgs), and on a much harder manga! (四月は君の噓 level 23 on natively vs 三ツ星カラーズ level 19 on natively). I haven’t read this much manga in a month since I finished よつばと！last october (2626 pgs), so it definitely feels good. Obviously it is still manga, so have to take page count with a grain of salt, but this was the second series I purchased in Japanese waaaaaaaay back in 2021, and when I tried the first chapter then it felt literally impossible.

Was my comprehension always totally there? Definitely not, there were bits I more or less skimmed through (which is still a kind of reading skill to develop! not just me coping), but I could understand more than enough to enjoy myself and learn some new words along the way (I will never forget 演奏家 or 舞台 as long as i live, seeing them however many hundreds of times)

Every other book I own is packed for the next few days, so I think i’ll use the rest of the week to catch up on all the book clubs i neglected while working on this

I finished this week’s reading for レベル７ and it was a major turning point - but I’d expect as much at 50% through the book! Honestly for a book so long (my paperback is ~660 pages) it keeps an excellent pace and I’m loving not needing a dictionary. There’s been maybe 5 words so far I’ve needed to look up and one ended up being a fake word a character explained later

I also read a bit more of 推し and I plan to finish it tonight so I have at least one book done in April. It’s been a rough month for my stats as I was traveling for 2 weeks and a lot of other claims on my time outside of that. That said, I look forward to better stats in May

I managed to read ~9 minutes per day on average in April. It doesn’t sound like much, but adding lookups (vocab and grammar) in addition to my other Japanese activities, that is definitely the most time I’ve spent on Japanese in ages. Normally I don’t track so precisely, but I found kind of an easy way just by knowing roughly how many minutes/page. I want to figure out how many daily minutes of reading helps me increase my vocabulary. I wrote about that in my brand new study log . So far after a 3 month baseline estimating my vocab online, in month 4, I can tell the 9 minutes per day is definitely helping me improve my vocabulary (or at least recover what I’m forgetting)!

Ironically, the one day I missed reading in April was yesterday when I spent so long setting up my study log. But I’m glad I did it, as it’s really fun to have another place to chat with you fine folks
