middle section of case four done! i believe the last section is split into two, so i’ll approach that next week. von karma briefly appeared but was mostly characters with much easier speech patterns, and had more investigation sections rather than just conversation, so i had a lot more fun today than i did yesterday. the section right at the end in the courtroom with everybody especially was fantastic. love the way franziska and edgeworth play off of each other so much, wish we got to spend more time with them.

words that stood out: 警護(けいご) (bodyguard, escort), 死角(しかく) (blindspot e.g. while driving), and 不釣(ふつ)り合(あ)い (imbalance, disparity, mismatch). also this has turned up before, but occasionally edgeworth will use 致し方ない instead of 仕方がない (or its equivalents) and it throws me off every single time and 義賊(ぎぞく) (chivalrous thief) turned up in kanji for the first time!

神去なあなあ日常 , 64-100%

Truth is I was aiming to finish 神去なあなあ日常 before the end of April, but in the end I finished it with two days to spare. There were some exciting bits towards the end, and stopping was harder.

Lovely book. Funny, light-hearted, informative. Never boring, even when apparently nothing much was happening. I’ll definitely read more 三浦 しをん.

Now what to do with the rest of April? I don’t expect to have much time in the next two days, so maybe it’s time to go back to 夢十夜? I’ll see how I feel tomorrow.

二日間前から二つの一夕話（いっせきわ）を読んだ。第一よりあまり没頭（ぼっとう）されなかったがもっと勉強になるのは気負ってうずうずした。

• はにかむ = to be bashful; to look self-conscious. Bite (噛(か)む) into the tooth (歯(は))?
• テキパキ(.) = (on-mim) promptly; prompt response
• 手(て)っ取(と)り早(ばや)い = promptly; without delay; with a quick solution
• 虚(きょ)を突(つ)く = to attack the enemy unguarded
• 赦(ゆる)す = to forgive; to pardon. An alternative Kanji for 許(ゆる)す, specifically for 容赦(ようしゃ).
• 言質(げんち) = a pledge; a commitment. Has Furigana for this one.
• 沈思黙考(ちんしもっこう) = being lost in deep thought. 沈黙(ちんもく) + 思考(しこう) = 沈思(ちんし)?
• 賽(さい)は投(な)げられた = The dice is cast. This 賽(さい) is サイコロ, that is, a dice. 賽銭箱(さいせんばこ) would have a different meaning of the Kanji.
• 喉(のど)から手(て)が出(で)る = to want something desperately (so much that a hand come out from one’s throat)
• 鎌(かま)を掛(か)ける = to ask a trick question, into revealing the truth. First Kanji is a sickle (鎌(かま)). Probably something a fast cunning weasel (かまいたち) would do?

名探偵コナン vol. 2 (p. 53 - p. 68)
Finished chapter 4 of volume 2.
Sometimes I have the feeling that the manga fits my level (as was the case with the first chapter of this volume). And then there are chapters like the last ones, where I have to look up so many kanji/words, that it gets a little tedious. I am really looking forward to when the time comes, that I can read whatever I want to and only have to look up a few odd kanji or so (at least I hope I will reach that level someday )

A bit surreal to see here but yeah 奶 is the character we use for milk (I think 乳 is still used for literary contexts but I’m not sure how), so 酸 奶 is literally “sour milk” aka yogurt.

Some books will randomly insert pictures for kanji. ユーギニア did it a lot and it drove me mad as I couldn’t read the book on dark mode due to it

i’ve been slacking on my fiction reading because my daily 日本語で読み物s have been entirely academic for the past few weeks. but i picked 君の名は back up to get a few pages in and i still keep losing it at the real photos they’re editing to look like drawings

but they’ve just fully stopped trying in chapter 4 i mean come ON

someone’s shift at the manga factory had to have been three minutes from ending because this is just tokyo station with the b&w filter and nothing else, it doesn’t fit with the art at all lmaooo

Urg, I hate how my interest being captured by something else can feel like a loss of interest in the current thing even when it’s not, it’s just a reshuffling of priority. (It was hard to read 透き通った風が吹いて today because I keep thinking about my two new novels. Of course I still haven’t decided which one I want to read first, though… And so much for my fantasy today of just sitting down and ending up reading 30+ pages of it lol)

In related news, I may just finish all the manga I most recently got off CDJapan before my Manga Republic order gets here lol I think this is the fastest I’ve read any

• 君には届かない。 vol 7. It was so cuuuute. I adore them. I can’t wait for vol 8 in however many months
• パパと親父のウチご飯 ch 1-3. Sensei’s handwriting is hard for me to read… The manga’s cute though.
• 4 pages of 透き通った風が吹いて, leaving off on pg 99

Some vocab of note:

キッチンペーパー [n.] paper towel
さしすせそ [n.] the five fundamental seasonings used in Japanese cooking: sugar (さとう), salt (しお), vinegar (す), soy sauce (せうゆ), miso (みそ). It appears せう was how what’s now しよう was represented in the old kana orthography, at least for on’yomi.
