The order with 花馨る雨の名を is supposed to get here on Thursday at the earliest. I think I might start that once it does, at least providing that I’m caught up on Tatami Galaxy.

自信作 (じしんさく) [n.] work of art the creator has confidence in; work one is proud of
日溜まり (ひだまり) [n.] sunny spot; exposure to the sun. Including this one even though it’s from a book club book because ひだまりが聴こえる being translated as “I Can Hear the Sunspot” made me think ひだまり meant “sunspot” —a.k.a. the cyclical dark spots on the surface of the sun that are cooler than the rest of the surface and have a strong magnetic field. But no, it’s “where the sunlight gathers.” It’s quasi-synonymous with 日向. It’s completely different!

did another section of 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ), the middle part of case two. have finally met franziska! found it easier than i did yesterday, possibly cos i did less overall and definitely cos ジンク (the non-native speaker) wasn’t in it.

words that stood out: 無線(むせん) (radio, wireless. big ohhhh moment for that one), 離陸(りりく) (takeoff. as of a plane), and 待(ま)ち構(かま)える (to lie in wait for, to watch for. seems to be less specific than 待(ま)ち伏(ぶ)せる but similar idea)

I just read 32 pages and finished the first chapter in よつばと.

だれがおれは?!?! (also, is this too anime-ish?)

omg I’m pumped. I did not expect this manga to be That funny? idk if I’m too excited, but I laughed so much. aaaah and I finished 32 pages in 30 minutes, this is such a huge win for me! although I was hyping myself up, I felt too overwhelmed to read this all by myself before, esp without the safe net of an active book club.

But this was actually easy compared to the other stuff I’m reading. It’s not easy as in I know all the vocab or understand all the grammar, but idk how to explain it - it’s the perfect fit for me at this level. both for learning and for the rewards!

I’m still reading more after chapter 1, but it will be so funny if I finish よつばと before ルリドラゴン (although I know that’s just me fantasizing after a mini milestone lol).

Somehow the 2nd Volume is much easier to understand than the first book. Maybe I’m just getting used to all the abbreviations and casual speak

Days 16 and 17 Progress:

Ended up buying an issue of コミック百合姫 to catch up on 踊り場 but it was almost as expensive as the volume… I want to pick up a few more series in the magazine to make it worth it, but I tend towards non-translated titles and it seems like most of the series are being translated. The yuri scanlation community is strong, lol.

Word of the Day: 無鉄砲(むてっぽう) - rash, reckless. Because how on Earth could you be prepared without your gun (鉄砲).

今日は教科書の第5のレッスンの読み物を読んで日本の大学生とかに関してだった。

As before, here are some useful words and phrases I encountered:

塾（じゅく） ＝cramming school
予備校 （よびこう）= school to help students prepare for college entrance exams. I encountered this word recently in a Spotify track for the Blue Period soundtrack entitled "予備校での作業”

少子化（しょうしか）＝decrease in the number of children due to low birth rate.

Context: 最近日本は少子化で子供の数が少なくなっていて大学も前より名入り安なっているのかもしれない。

The second volume of かがみの孤城 started with a bit more excitement, but it still feels slower than it should be.

I’ve started four books in April, and dividing my time between them means that none of them is close to finishing. I think I may have to focus on one to just read to the end and get it out of the way. I guess かがみの孤城 is the best candidate for that as it’s the easiest, and the one that I’m not enjoying enough to let drag into May.

Seasons was about how the mountains can be described in different seasons, spring- 山笑(やまわら)う, summer- 山滴(やましたた)る mountains have drip mountains drip/overflow with freshness, fall- 山(やま)粧う(よそおう), winter- 山眠(やまねむ)る. It also said that people used to pass time by trying to spot shapes in mountain snow melt, it seemed similar to how people try to spot shapes in clouds.

After such a long time, I finally finished vol 11! I wish I could have read more of vol 12, but I feel like I actually slept a decent amount last night, which totally makes up for it. Vol 12 isn’t even all Part 2. The last chapter is Part 3. I’m not 100% sure I read it when I read Part 3, so I’ll (re)read that chapter before I move onto to Part 4. I’m so excited to finally make a milestone!

Why is it that I can never remember if 蛇 is へび or えび, but when I see えび I always immediately know it’s shrimp. I feel like the mix-up should happen both ways. I wonder if I’ll get it down before I get the lesson on WK. I got the じゃ reading down forever ago though lol (and good thing too because WK doesn’t teach it. Not even 蛇口?)

• 組長娘の世話係 vol 3. Unfortunately, this is all I have of this one right now too. I wanna read more…
• アタック!! vol 6. Man, I hate Kaneko-tachi’s middle school coach. Anyone who would destroy their players doesn’t deserve to be a coach. What could your pride possibly be worth if you demand peak performance/perfection from a player who’s sick and/or injured and then punish anyone who tries to stand up for them? How in the hell is he still allowed to coach. Utterly deplorable.
• リンゴに蜂蜜 ch 1-3. Finally started my other Hideyoshico manga (I think it’s the last one I have). This one’s got two stories; the first is ch 1-2 + the かきおろし at the end, and the second is ch 3-5. They’re both summer stories (which I did not know when I picked it up lol). Strangely, the first story we only got furi on 辛い so we know it’s からい and not つらい (I feel like context woulda told you that though), but in the second, we got furi for names.
• 8 pages of 四畳半神話大系, leaving off on pg 44
• 占い師・藤鬼 ch 21-41 (end) on Satori Reader. Urg, I forgot how annoying Sayaka’s voice is. Also, how old is she again? Like 8? Or so I was thinking, but it appears she’s a college student… Anyway, my subscription is ending in two weeks, and I won’t be continuing it. We’ll see if I read anything else on it in the meantime. I have a few other complete stories bookmarked.
