This thread is so active I can’t keep up with it. But, just stopping by to say so far I’m failing at this challenge. I’m not counting things that I read out in the wild, like signs and menus etc, just when I sit down to read in a focused way, and so far this month I’ve done that… 3 times. But still, my reading is getting a bit faster, I picked up a manga that had been sitting on my shelf for a while, and before I knew it I had finished it. Debated picking up the next volume, but I think I’ll finish the other stuff I’ve got first.

You’re a translator for Pro Wresting? That’s so cool! How did you end up with this job? Is it fun?

I’ve been slacking on my reading lately (I discovered the japanlife reddit and got sucked in oh no!) but I’ve still kept up with my NHKEasy reading and got to page 212 of Chamber of Secrets so still getting somewhere.

On Saturday I took a roadtrip with some friends and we went to a temple way up in the mountains of Yamagata to see a self mummified monk (sokushimbutsu, living Buddah, mummy but not a mummy, there’s a History Channel special about this guy). Before seeing aformentioned monk you need to be purified/exorcized but apparently I failed to mention this so when I turned to my friends and said “he’s going to exorcise us now” I recieved a very “wtf did you bring me to?” face. Did my absolute best to understand all speeches from the monk but somehow missed the history of people trying to destroy the temple, such as when Japan lost the war to America (always feels a little awkward to hear about, but no hard feelings it seems). Anyway, I understood more than I’d expected but it took so much focus. Focusing a lot was probably a good thing since sitting in a room with a self mummified monk for 30min is unnerving.

You’re a translator for Pro Wresting? That’s so cool! How did you end up with this job? Is it fun?

I’m just translating pro wrestling in an unofficial fan capacity at the moment, haha, though I do know someone else who started out doing exactly what I’m doing and then got hired by the actual company…

I’m not remotely skilled enough to do this in a professional capacity, though, and probably won’t be for another couple more years at least, so I’m just trying my best as a fan! No one else stepped up after TJPW lost their translator, so if I wanted to keep watching the shows with my friends, I had to be the one to do the translation.

And yes, it is fun, though it can often be a bit stressful, because it’s a lot of work and there are constant deadlines, and I have more pressure on me now because I have like 400 people relying on me for translation. Those things would be the same regardless of whether or not I was doing this professionally.

Making my way through Conan. So far, this volume has been all about the gadgets: the professor first gave him shoes that can strengthen his kicks. The more he cranks the dials on them, the stronger his kicks will be. He all but traumatized a poor first grader by sending a soccer ball careening past the kid’s head and splitting a tree in half. He also now has glasses that can help him track whoever he puts a special sticker on within 20 kilometers.

Also, I posted about this in the Bookwalker Freebie Thread, but just in case anyone’s interested here, the first volume of Oshi no Ko is free to read for the next couple of weeks. I might start on that tomorrow. I don’t normally like reading two things at the same time, but they both have a time limit, so I’ll just have to do what I can to get through both.

That’s really great! I’m sure everyone is really grateful to have your translations. Are you hoping to translate professionally in the future?

I’m seriously considering it, yes! The field I have a master’s degree in hasn’t really worked out for me, so I’m strongly considering switching career paths, and translation seems better suited to my lifestyle. I dunno if I’ll ever end up translating for pro wrestling on a professional level (I don’t live in Japan and I don’t have any interest in doing interpretation, which a lot of companies seem to want), but I have a lot of other interests where I feel fairly confident there’s a need for translation, such as Japanese papermaking (Japanese paper is very important for book conservation worldwide). For now, I’m just trying my best, and am trying to learn as much as I can in the process!

Discovered today that the cover is nearly the same color as a freshly cleaned copper penny

I recently learned that you can clean the oxidation off of pennies by putting them in vinegar with salt, so I decided to try that out today. I didn’t expect the result to be a different color than a new penny, but I guess it makes sense: those are polished and this ain’t. It’s still a bit shiny, but mostly it’s just bright. It kinda doesn’t even look real lol

Joining such an activity for the first time, it’s so inspiring - pretty sure it’ll really help me to stay on track
It’s hard for me to focus on books or even manga so for now I’m gonna stick with the rpg game I recently started - Lost sphear, focusing on text and talking to all the npcs )

Also, usually once a week I’m reading with my friend a VN - Natsuno kanata (it’s free on steam, btw) or ひぐらしのなく頃に

And when I’m short on time I usually read a bit of 魔女の宅急便 (Kiki’s delivery service) since it’s the only thing I have on my phone

Also started P5R ( ペルソナ5 ザ・ロイヤル) in June so reading it from time to time as well ^^

The plan is to read/play for at least 30-40min a day, let’s gooo

did the first half of case two of 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ) and found it significantly harder than the first, though i think i know why. the extra polite speech of the flight attendant (コノミチ) always takes a little bit longer to parse (tho it got easier as i went on) and one of the characters is a non-native speaker of japanese, so he kept saying things that were close to real words, but not quite. i got most of them, either cos i knew it already or by cross referencing with the english script and working backwards, but that first one completely stumped me. i’ll put it under a header, for anyone interested. still, a locked room mystery on a plane? sign me up!

words that stood out: 弁明(べんめい) (explanation, excuse, apology), 大富豪(だいふごう) (billionaire), and 公募(こうぼ) (public appeal, in this case for suitcase designs)

so as far as i can tell, the logic in his misspoken speech is that the whole thing is in katakana (not too unusual) and one character is wrong, but everything else is right. so for example, at once point he says トキハガネナリ instead of 時は金なり, and at another time he says トンデヒニイルマツムシヤ instead of 飛んで火に入る夏の虫 (why is ヤ there? who knows). there was also that one time he missed out the ん in 文句(もんく).

so with all that said, what stumped me was this: ボウガンムチ. it’s something he’s calling edgeworth as an insult, i’m pretty sure, he’s like オマエは、アレだな！and then says this. the english uses an insolvent/insolent pun, but i must have been searching for that badly cos i didn’t get anywhere.

anyway, any solutions welcome!
