I’m really pleasantly surprised that my trendline is still positive. I thought for sure that I had slowed down too much. While it’s not as good as winter, it’s really nice to see how much more I can read compared to last year or even just fall.
Hi. I will try this challenge this year. I am really struggling with specific grammar patterns, such as relative clauses. I need to read more to improve my awareness. I will be using more of EasyNews and Matcha. If I am confident enough, I will surely try reading Harry Potter.
Hello everyone!
This is the first time for me to join this challenge (or any challenge here on WK). I am really looking forward to it and am excited to see, how many days I will be able to read the coming months!
Books/Manga/VN, that I am currently reading (way too many)
After both falling off the radar last challenge and finishing only one of my half-read books, I pretty much stopped reading consistently. That being said, I did end up reading every day during the challenge, so that’s still something. This challenge, though, I just want to get back to basics and read every day. I just started volume 1 of NANA, so I’ll be continuing with that for now. My other goal is to not fall off the face of the earth this time (which I feel like is always my secondary goal?).
Ready for the spring challenge! I only need to decide what to read next. With my rapidly growing tsundoku, I’m sure that’s not going to be a problem. For now, I only know that from April 8 onwards I will be reading 四畳半神話大系 with the ABC.
In the previous challenge I finished 11 books and read 2792 pages [1]. Excited to see how this one goes!
I finished 花束は毒 today and it was fine. I thought the very last scene in the book was a delight, but I really wasn’t that into the ‘final reveal’. My review is here but I didn’t write that much as it was neither a phenomenal book nor a terrible one. Probably a good entry-level adult novel, though. Provided you like crime.
Major spoilers, dark themes warning:
So throughout the book we are told that the man receiving letters (真壁) telling him to call off his marriage to かなみ was charged with rape 4 years ago, but that he denies doing this. Due to privacy laws, the victims name was never revealed to him and scrubbed from court documents. We come to find out the letters were actually intended for かなみ and were sent by her father who knows that she faked her rape charge against 真壁 using semen of his she stole from her part time job cleaning love hotels. She was obsessed with and stalking 真壁, but because she was a plain girl without connections she felt she’d have no chance at getting him. So she decided to destroy his social status.
I have…not so great feelings about using false rape charges as the ‘gotcha’. Part of it is probably cultural - it’s not unusual to hear men bemoaning woman being believed when they accuse someone of sexual misconduct. It’s a rare thing, and I doubt most women would want to undergo the scrutiny that comes with those charges (and in fact wanting to avoid that is why legitimate cases sometimes don’t get brought!) and every time it’s used as a plot point it kind of makes it seem more common than it is, to my eyes.
I have no idea if the plot twist was as unpleasant to Japanese readers, although quite a few people note they read it in the library for some reason
I would like to participate! Just need to wait a couple weeks to get my laptop fixed so I can add myself to the participant list and make a proper home post. I don’t want to mess anything up in the meantime. I’ll still read everyday until then, though!
Sneaking in a little last-minute home post here welcome to the spring challenge everyone! It’s always exciting to start out fresh and see what everyone’s up to
Background
I’m currently in the era of visual novels apparently, though really what else is new The Zero Escape VN club I’m hosting just started up so that’ll be an ongoing project, in addition to BU$TAFELLOWS which I may or may not stick to the schedule for haha. I’m also still working through Steins;Gate when I circle back to that, so lots to keep me busy! I’ll probably also throw in some manga and such for funsies (like when the OHSHC club starts ) and maybe read a normal novel at some point, but who knows!
I’m only at level 8 but I just started reading on and off (more off). I don’t understand most of what I read but i feel it’s good practice anyways. It is exiting when I run across kanji that I know. I’m hoping this challenge will keep me focused and i’ll start a new reading habit.
I will be reading:
Todai Easy Japanese (1 news article per day)
履いてください、鷹峰さん. (1 or 2 chapters per day)
maybe 千と千尋の神隠し if i finish the above manga early.

Obviously idk how to copy and past a calendar. jeez.
Today I read an entire chapter of チェンソーマン ( ) with relative ease! More than that, I actually enjoyed it and got into flow a little! やった!!!
Something that’s made a huge difference to my enjoyment and comprehension is changing from XTREME HARDCORE IMMERSION MODE down to something more beginner, which fits my skill level having just finished Genki 1. That looks like:
Letting myself immediately look up words & phrases I don’t know, instead of trying to work them out by force;
Letting myself plug the fully conjugated word into DeepL, instead of only the stem;
Instead of trying to break down and decode a sentence with grammar that isn’t making sense to me, I’ve been plugging the chunks into DeepL one at a time until I figure out the gist, and then double checking the whole sentence. This means I’m surfacing a lot more nuance and understanding the ways that combos of phrases I understand individually modify each other when they interact.
Overall, I’m finding that I’m learning AND enjoying more by not being a “figure it out on your own or die” purist. Feelsgoodman. Perfectionism can eat my shorts.
Another challenge! I think this is my 7th? Can’t believe it’s been so many already.
This time my goals will be to not get burnt out trying to keep up with all the clubs I’ve joined/want to join (I’m a danger to myself) and somehow also read a non-bookclub book on the side. Good luck to me…
Even if it doesn’t happen 100% it’s always fun to have big goals
Pyoro’s Home Post
Missed the winter challenge so I’m happy to be back for spring! I’ve spent the beginning of this year reading a lot of manga so my goal for this challenge is to focus more on novels and games.
After another pause I wanted to get back to every day reading again, so here we are. I have an epilogue of 本好きの下剋上 2 left, and I thought to continue reading that series after finishing that one
Updated some of my goals last minute. While I do want to re-read One Piece, I don’t like the pressure of doing it for the challenge. Right now I am enjoying playing Final Fantasy VII again so I think the only thing I really want to commit to is Tatami Galaxy. I’ll update every day what I read but I want to be more open about what I consume for fun.
