Today I read a little bit of next4years and 2 pages of ๅคœใ‚ซใƒ•ใ‚ง.

Some vocab of note:

ใพใŸใ€ๅŒใ˜ๅคขใ‚’่ฆ‹ใฆใ„ใŸ progress is at 94% now. So not much left :v: Read volume 7 and 8 of Ponkotsu Ponko.

To jump ahead, I did skip reading the novel today because of the Dwarf Fortress Steam release, so Iโ€™m a bit occupied by that and probably will sink some more time into the game but I try not to go too crazy, haha.

I was writing that I havenโ€™t yet decided on what novel Iโ€™ll read next but while going through my candidates and the past book clubs, Iโ€™ve decided to read ๅคœๅธ‚ next

Day 27 Progress:
ใŠ้šฃใฎๅคฉไฝฟๆง˜ ๅ››ๅ†Š - 0.33% โ†’ 3.33%

Another absolutely insane day of starting at 2 AM and missing my 5% reading quota. Itโ€™s honestly getting me down a bit but hopefully I can catch up and/or sleep a little earlier tomorrowโ€ฆ

This LN was originally a WN and I wonder if that source is a contributing factor to some funky writing, like the same word being written two different ways within a few sentences. Like I get kanji/kana usage is often deliberate to create a certain effect and as a non-native reader I certainly canโ€™t sense those things very well, but when I see something like ่Šฑใณใ‚‰ and then a few sentences later ่Šฑๅผ and canโ€™t actively discern any kind of intent behind it, I canโ€™t help but feel itโ€™s simply that the author was writing the draft all in one breath and later editing didnโ€™t really iron out those inconsistenciesโ€ฆ

Word of the Day: ๆธ›ใธใ‚‹ใ‚‚ใ‚“ใ˜ใ‚ƒใชใ„ - itโ€™s no big deal. Didnโ€™t come across any words I really liked today so I chose this phrase to VENT my annoyance at being stuck on sentences only to realize they were fixed expressions after all. Obviously, idioms and expressions are only okay if theyโ€™re in a language I can read wellโ€ฆ

Gonna stick to my original schedule of a chapter of ้’ใƒ–ใ‚ฟ and finish tomorrow. Today was a rough one, and only have one more section of chapter 3 to go. I lucked out because yeah, today was rough.

Itโ€™s amusing that written noises are perfectly fine in Japanese literature

Pretty sure putting โ€œใˆใธใธใธใธโ€ and โ€œใƒใƒใƒใƒใƒโ€ in someoneโ€™s speech in English writing would get you told off by many an English teacher.

Card Captor Sakura volume 2 or Aria: the masterpiece volume 2 โ€“ progress report

Yesterday: Read up to page 166 of Aria: the masterpiece volume 2.
Today: Read up to page 196, finished chapter 15.

Didnโ€™t have too much time on my hands today either but at least enough to finish the chapter I began reading yesterday. It was nice to see the postman after so many chapters again and most of the panels showing the festivities were simply beautifully drawn. :slightly_smiling_face:

Word or expression of the day:

ๅ…ผใญใ‚‹ - (ใ‹ใญใ‚‹) - to serve two or more functions simultaneously

Honourable mention(s):
ใ•ใ‚Šใ’ใชใ„ - nonchalant, unconcerned, in a casual mannerโ€‹
ๆŠœใๆ‰“ใก - (ใฌใใ†ใก) - doing something suddenly, without warning

  • ใฏใŸใ‚‰ใ็ดฐ่ƒž Vol.2 Ch.9 (end volume)

Cancer have a heart too.

  • Death Note Vol.5 Ch.42

Saving the baka. Of course, gone well and useful in the end.

  • ใ‹ใŒใฟใฎๅญคๅŸŽ (ไธŠ) 96% => 100% (end volume) + (ไธ‹) 0 => 8% (half of January)

I read the book and listened along with audiobook, speed 1.2x. I consider this one primarily listening activity; but I update here, just for the sake of ending the volume.

Listening along with transcript allows me to highlight vocabularies (rather than Google Translate immediately, and not saved); and Bookwalker makes page flipping very nice to do, and easy to read fast.

Interesting vocabularies
  • ๆผ(ใ‚ใ•)ใ‚‹ hunting โ€œin a morning gameโ€. I also saw ๆผ(ใ™ใชใฉ)ใ‚‹ (hunt ๅ–(ใจ)ใ‚‹ that fights sand clock ็ ‚ๆ™‚่จˆ(ใ™ใชใฉใ‘ใ„)), so canโ€™t be entirely sureโ€ฆ
  • ๅง‘ๆฏ(ใ“ใใ) temporary / palliative. Just this first Kanji as grandma (mother-in-law)'s advice.
  • ่ž้€š(ใ‚†ใ†ใšใ†) lending money / adaptability. Perhaps originally ่ž้€š(ใ‚†ใ†ใฅใ†) (i.e. Rendaku, and no sound differences in most dialects).
  • ๅ‚่ฆณ(ใผใ†ใ‹ใ‚“) spectatorship. Watching (่ฆณ(ใฟ)ใ‚‹) that can protect themselves (้˜ฒๅพก(ใผใ†ใŽใ‚‡)). Kanji is for side (ๅ‚(ใ‹ใŸใ‚)ใ‚‰)
  • ไผธ(ใฎ)ใณ็››(ใ–ใ‹)ใ‚Š growth period. Rendakuโ€™d too.
  • ๅš(ใฏใ)ใ™ใ‚‹ to earn fame (becoming ๅšๅฃซ(ใฏใ‹ใ›))
  • ้š ่”ฝ(ใ„ใ‚“ใบใ„) covering up. Second Kanji has that kind of meaning.
  • ๆŠ˜(ใŠ)ใ‚Š่ฟ”(ใ‹ใˆ)ใ— (้›ป่ฉฑ(ใงใ‚“ใ‚)) calling back
  • ๆ‰‹ๆ‡(ใฆใชใš)ใ‘ใ‚‹ to tame. Latter half is ๆ‡(ใชใš)ใ‘ใ‚‹, can be thought of ๅไป˜(ใชใฅ)ใ‘ใ‚‹.
  • ๆฎตๅ–(ใ ใ‚“ใฉ)ใ‚Š schedule
  • ไผ่จ€(ใงใ‚“ใ”ใ‚“) voice message, can be like answering machine or voice SMS.
  • ๅฎฃไผ(ใ›ใ‚“ใงใ‚“) propaganda. Announce, then pass forward.
  • ่ปข่ฝ(ใฆใ‚“ใ‚‰ใ) a struggling man would trip over a little (่ปข(ใ“ใ‚)ใถ), before really collapse (ๆฒก่ฝ(ใผใคใ‚‰ใ))
  • ๅ‡(ใ“)ใ‚‹ fixed gaze (ๅ‡่ฆ–(ใŽใ‚‡ใ†ใ—)), like paying attention to details
  • ใƒ˜ใƒœใ„ clumsy, like โ€œHey Boy, clumsy work you didโ€. Another form is ใธใผ. Perhaps ไธ‹ๆ‰‹(ใธใŸ) + ใผใ‚ใผใ‚.
  • ๆŸ“่‰ฒไฝ“(ใ›ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚‡ใใŸใ„) stained body = chromosome. First Kanji reading is same as ๆ„ŸๆŸ“(ใ‹ใ‚“ใ›ใ‚“), ย ย  ๆฑšๆŸ“(ใŠใ›ใ‚“).
  • ๅฐ่ƒžไฝ“(ใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใปใ†ใŸใ„) endoplasmic reticulum. Small sac in a cell = it does look like a bag.
  • ใ‚ใ‚Œใ‚‚ใฎ fragile items. Kanji form is ๅ‰ฒ(ใ‚)ใ‚Œ็‰ฉ(ใ‚‚ใฎ). Indeed, ๅ‰ฒใ‚Œ็‰ฉๆณจๆ„.
  • ๆ‹…ๆžถ(ใŸใ‚“ใ‹) = stretcher. Many words with this same reading (ใŸใ‚“ใ‹), though.
  • ้–ขไธŽ(ใ‹ใ‚“ใ‚ˆ) taking part in. ไธŽ can mean together in, e.g. ๅ‚ไธŽ(ใ•ใ‚“ใ‚ˆ).

  • ้ขจๅŒ–(ใตใ†ใ‹) weathering, including fading of memories
  • ๆ‰‹้•(ใฆใกใŒ)ใ„ blunder
  • ไธๆ‘‚็”Ÿ(ใตใ›ใฃใ›ใ„) unhealthy living. The opposite is indeed ๆ‘‚็”Ÿ(ใ›ใฃใ›ใ„).
  • ไป˜้Œฒ(ใตใ‚ใ) appendix
  • ้ “็€(ใจใ‚“ใกใ‚ƒใ) concerns. ้ “็€ใ—ใชใ„ no worries (e.g. about money)
  • ็…™็ช(ใˆใ‚“ใจใค) chimney, like thrust up a chimney.
  • ๅผทๅผต(ใ“ใ‚ใฐ)ใ‚‹ to get stiffened. Learnt a little beforehand in Most Recent Japanese Word thread.
  • ่‰ฒ็ด (ใ—ใใ) pigment

  • ็•ฐ่ญฐ(ใ„ใŽ)ใชใ— no objection, but the word just some similar to ๆ„็พฉ(ใ„ใŽ) (significance) and ็•ฐ็พฉ(ใ„ใŽ) (different meaning).

I finished my advent reading early, so then I was sure Iโ€™d try and read ahead with the audiobook, but then surprised myself by reading this weekโ€™s ใŠใฐใกใ‚ƒใ‚“ใŸใกใฎใ„ใ‚‹ใจใ“ใ‚ story instead. It was a good one, too.

Still very much undecided on what to do with that audiobook. Thanks for the link, @pocketcat. It showed just fine for me, and the selection was quite wide. My local version of Audible doesnโ€™t seem to have the same variety though. I also noticed that you get to pay for the audiobooks on top of the subscription (like Apple TV, apparently). I donโ€™t get this model at all. But more importantly, I donโ€™t expect to be listening to audiobooks all the time, and definitely not enough of them to warrant a subscription. I also have that ใ‹ใŒใฟใฎๅญคๅŸŽ already downloaded for whenever I feel up to it, and itโ€™s many, many hours of listening.

So, what will I read tomorrow? Try and finish the audiobook on time? Start with the new compulsive readers club pick? Continue my mountain ghost stories? Take the day off? Tune in to find out.

Today I read this weeks ABBC reading of Cells at Work.
Man that is an incredibly hard book. Lots of dense text explanation panels, really specialised vocabulary, and a fair amount of slangy speech too :exploding_head:
I got it done, but Iโ€™m not sure Iโ€™m going to make it to the end of this book!

I read 14 pages of ๅคœใ‚ซใƒ•ใ‚ง.

I also reread stories 01-03 from Lingo Masteryโ€™s Japanese Short Stories for Beginners, in order to start translating them myself for practice (and also because I donโ€™t like their translations). These were the first stories that I read, aside from ้€”ไธญไธ‹่ปŠใฎๆตท, and Iโ€™m pleased to note that I had zero trouble reading them this time around. Ohhh, but I am absolutely remembering how much I hated this book, and exactly why, which is also why I will never be buying anything from Lingo Mastery again. I do not trust them. I mean, the stories themselves are fine, if a little overly simple grammar-wise for me now (but then, Iโ€™m no longer an absolute beginner, so Iโ€™m not the target audience anymore), but the restโ€ฆ

Although these days, Iโ€™m used to the sentence that serves basically as the dialogue tag using a past-tense verb only when it comes after the dialogue. These stories use past tense even when it comes before.

This is one of the things that makes me think Soseki was figuring out what he wanted to write about as he went along โ€“ he pretty clearly drops the idea of writing about interactions between cats relatively early, and settles into โ€œoutsider viewpoint of human folly with occasional cat slapstickโ€. If it had been written to be published as a single book rather than serialized in a magazine, I wonder if some of the chapter one stuff with other cats would have been edited out when he revised itโ€ฆ
