Word of the Day:
Today was ok but didn’t read as much as I thought I would.
29/11 2 pages Orange, 11 pages Spy Family
At least I’ve made some progress. I’d like to finish Spy Family on time at least since I’m running the club. Which reminds me, I need to put a schedule up for the next volume…

Well, Pokemon, but different from the original anime. I also have read this one in the past, in my native language; perhaps to around first 5-6 volumes. Only recently that I realized that it is a very long series, and new volumes are still being written.
I stumbled a little at 吸血 (Like that 吸血鬼 thread).
I think the two Kanji’s in the first line of the description is 鱗粉. Perhaps コンパン in the third line is 今般.
マ and once again an outing.

Almost made it all the way to the end of the challenge before winter hit, but not quite! We’re supposed to get a couple inches today/tonight, and it just started as I was wrapping up my reading. I’ll probably go out with my real camera later if it starts lookin real pretty

Read:
殴る「なぐる」ー to punch, to hit
ケンカ ー fight, brawl, scuffle
避ける「よける」ー to put aside
ボッコボコ ー repeatedly punched/kicked, severely beaten up (confusingly also: “with a burble”, which I thought was a word from lewis carrol’s nonsense poem jabberwocky? it’s very bouba so the onomatopoeia makes sense but still strange to see it in a dictionary)
要素「ようそ」ー component, factor
なりに ー in one’s own way
ていうか ー how should I put it, or rather
正当防衛「せいとうぼうえい」ー self defense (here written セイトウボウエイ)
断る「ことわる」ー to refuse, to reject
停電「ていでん」ー power outage
愉快「ゆかい」ー pleasant, delightful (here, sarcastic「だいぶ愉快な顔」)

I got a little overwhelmed between the holidays and work and slacked off for the past couple of day >_<
Today I did my
Hobonichi Weeks translation. No kanji that I didn’t already know this week so that was nice! I’m starting to get a little bored of pokemon hehe… I think I’ll start reading along with the absolute beginner bookclub until they surpass the sample.
I also really want to work on finishing up some of my bigger goals for the year so those might take priority next month. My big Japanese goal was to hit WaniKani lvl 15 and I’m on track to hit that later this week ![]()
Edit:
Ended up reading the first 8 pages of cells at work as well!

Loopers ![]()
Read quite a bit more yesterday after posting. Was waiting for the stupid scene to end and it just seemed to keep going. So I got to bed late and I’ve been tired today.
Considering the amount I read today, I probably ended up reading 50-70% of the chapter yesterday. It didn’t feel so long today, maybe because discussions never got so lookup heavy I just want to quit. Maybe 60% of it yesterday and 40% today? I still read for more than an hour, no idea how long because I don’t time it. (Timing it makes it feel like work rather than fun.)
However, between the current state of the story, and how lookup heavy it can be at times, I’m almost bored. Like, for a native they’d read through these parts so quickly, so could just enjoy the crazy slice of life portion, but I’m hacking my way through it with a machete when it is easy to moderate, and climbing mountains when the lookups get heavy.
Looked up 265 words at least for this chapter. Some I looked up twice, some I just double checked the meaning, so I didn’t save them. In the end, the number should probably be around 300 words. ![]()
I want actual story progression back please. -.-’ This is a bit too hard to enjoy as a slice of life, even temporarily. Or alternatively, give me slice of life with the characters I like the best.

Card Captor Sakura volume 1 or Aria: the masterpiece volume 2 – progress report
Yesterday: Read up to page 68 in Aria: the masterpiece volume 2, finished chapter 11.
Today: Continued from page 129, read up to page 146 in Card Captor Sakura.
This chapter was fine to read until I got to another slightly text-heavy point (explanation about Sakura’s deceased mother). There is also a whole letter to be deciphered read on the next page. Because of that, I decided to call it a day since I’m too tired to do much more today. ![]()
Word or expression of the day:
コンクール - competition, contest (derived from the French ‘concours’)
Honourable mention:
噂 - (うわさ) - rumour, gossip, hearsay
Day 60, 29th of November In today’s DrDru story, we learn some phrases, like asking someone’s name and where they live. Then we meet a guard of Buckingham palace and a piano player from the Kremlin.
Nov 26 - today: また、同じ夢を見ていた progress at 71% now, so 2.25% per day. Definitely an improvement over the 7% in 2 weeks. xD
If I stick with average of 2.25% of the novel per day I’d be finished in about 2 weeks. So I’ll try to finish it by mid-december.
I read Ponkotsu Ponko volume 3 and started a VN on Steam, read for about 90 minutes.

人間椅子 -
ジョジョの奇妙な冒険53
76 - 112
Idk why I dawdled before starting to read last night. I’m super busy the rest of the week so idk how it will go. I’m hoping to finish this volume today or tomorrow though. We’ll see how it goes. I’m on pace at work maybe… so might be able to do more studying during the day.
Tried reading yesterday and couldn’t get into the spirit. Maybe I went to hard last week. I brought my Kindle to work and though maybe reading on there for lunch would suffice. Gonna take it easy the next few days, but still read when I can. Also wanting to watch Conan again, so may go back to that for a bit. Idk.
Read some 青ブタ10.
I am really torn on what I want to read right now haha.
I read almost 30 pages of 異世界の名探偵 but got a work ping before I could hit 30 and my concentration was wrecked. I’m really trying for a minimum of 30 pages a day to even have a chance of closing out my books before the end of the year
Even then…I probably need closer to 50 to be honest.
Maybe I’ll start 黄金仮面 a few days early just to see if it’s a lost cause or not. I tried reading it last year at about this time and I just could not keep up. Paperback + following with audiobook so no lookups and my unknown vocab level + grammar I wasn’t comfortable with was too high. Let’s see how it goes this time!

Still far from optimal reading state, though I did read two chapters of ブルーロック when I thought I’d only read one so yay though that just shows how disoriented I am
It’s still a great time though; things are very interesting, and I always love meeting new fun characters ![]()
I got curious and googled it on a whim and it turns out コンパン is the Japanese name for Venonat, if that helps.
Day 20 Progress:
お隣の天使様 三冊 - 48.27% → 55.18%
ぼっち・ざ・ろっく! - Chapter 1
So I was really excited to read some ぼっち today but I honestly kinda struggled, not really with grammar or even vocab; it just took a lot of mental energy to go through. It’s funny because I feel like I’ve kinda developed this unreasonable expectation that I’m able to read anything but the second I start, I realize I’m not really enjoying myself because it still feels so laborious…
I haven’t read スローループ for a few days so I want to do some catching up there as well.

体育館の殺人, 37-45%
Yesterday I read (along with the audiobook) this week’s portion of 体育館の殺人. We’re now almost halfway through the book, yet we still know nothing about the victim, other than his name. Not because it’s a mystery, but because we don’t care, I suppose. Everyone is so busy trying to figure out who had opportunity to do it, that we don’t care at all about why anyone would want to do it. Oh well. It’s strange to know nothing about the victim and everything about a forgotten everyday object in the vicinity of the crime, but so be it.
Today I should be reading this week’s おばちゃんたちのいるところ story, and hopefully I will, but for now I’m wasting time browsing online bookstores in case I find a suitable book of short stories to read as part of an advent calendar challenge starting tomorrow. One idea is 叙述トリック短編集, a collection of short stories that contain a narrative trick, and the reader is challenged to figure out the solution before the end. It sounds good, but I’m also looking at other options. And trying to ignore the fact that the best option is not to add any more reading to my already busy reading schedule. ![]()
November 29th!
I feel asleep without posting yesterdays update so I’m doing it this morning instead!
I read this weeks ABBC assignment of Cells at Work. It seems incredibly difficult for an ABBC pick as it contains loads of really specialised vocabulary - but the vocab sheet was very well populated so I struggled less than I expected to.
Nov 29 & 30 (because I didn’t post yesterday)
かがみの孤城 68 → 72% (page 340)
Aaand it’s the end of the challenge for me!
My goal this time was simply to read more days than I did last challenge, and I think I managed to do that. At the very least I was much more consistent this time round, with 17/31 days in October, and 16/30 days in November.
I began the challenge 43% through かがみの孤城(上)and now I’m at 72%. Which doesn’t seem like a lot, but my reading ability and speed has definitely improved! I think I’ll be able to finally finish かがみの孤城(上) before the 10th of December, then have 21 days to also finish 人間椅子 and perhaps start 世界から猫が消えたなら at/before New Year.
I did call it my end of the challenge
but I’ll keep posting here throughout December, especially while working my way through the rest of かがみの孤城. But not so much focusing on consistent reading, more so finishing off the books I’m partly through so I can have a fresh start to a new year.
Here’s to many more read every day challenges ![]()
