Every single week I think to myself "no, it’s physically impossible for this week’s part to be even cuter than last week’s. It’s just not doable.
Then s*** like Ookami-chan and Tori-san sleeping together happens.

The page numbers are unfortunately not visible for every page, and I read with my custom version of Mokuro, where I broke the page number navigation, so I have no idea at what page I’m at :sweat_smile:

Ok, so here we goes, at the time of typing this I’m first, rather than playing catch up like I have until now. This week felt harder than this manga has been so far, but still manageable.

p36

ドライアド：あらオオカミちゃん
Dryad: Oh, Okami-chan

ドライアド：こんなところまで来てくれるなんてお母さんすごく嬉しいわ。
Dryad: to come to this kind of place, mother is super happy

(I’m guessing Dryad isn’t literally Okami’s mother, but more a sort of spiritual forest goddess mother)

ドライアド：何かご用かしら
Dryad: What sort of use [can I be]?

I’m also guessing here that ご is the onyomi honorific prefix?

オオカミ：あの実は。。。
Okami: The truth is…

My grammar just kind of broke down here, but I guess it’s "That’s why you were being mysterious that time?@

きつね：ドライアド様仕事を放って勝手に遊びに行ったらだめですよ
きつね：いいですね？
オオカミ：きつねちゃん厳しいですもんね

Kitsune’s line makes no sense to me, so I guess there’s something I’ve got wrong but I’m not sure where.

きつね：ね？
Kitsune: Hmm?

きつね：さ、起きて戻りますよ
Kitsune: hey, get up and go back

オオカミ：あの様子だと遊びに出かけるのは難しそう
Okami: With that situation, visiting will be difficult

ドライアドちゃん：オオカミちゃーん！！
Mini-dryad: Okami-chan!

This is a different usecase fo だろう, tofugu has an article about the grammar pattern:
Japanese だろう Form for Guessing

たら is only really hypothethical when it’s in present tense. When it’s in the past, it translates roughly to “after”. “After thinking about it, I’ve gotten really sleepy”

No “want” in here. It’s closer to “I’m going to sleep”

In this case “boring” is a better translation probably

This わけて is the て form of 分ける, “to divide”, and 遊ぶ is “to play” or “to have fun”
“I divided my power a little, and sneaked out to play”

ちゃんと is “to do X properly”
“I was doing my job properly”

すぐに is “immediately” in this case at least
And this is closer to “I immediately returned my conciousness back to the huge tree”

秘密 is “secret”, not really mystery
It helps to know, that this is said by Ookami-chan
Word for word
それなら - if that’s the case
どうして - why
あの時は - at that time
秘密に - as a secret
and there’s probably a “to keep” omitted
“Then why did you keep it a secret at that time?”

This is mostly correct, but there’s nothing that says that Kitsune-chan would get a little mad. Literally it says that “Kitsune-san would be made angry” with the ちゃう giving it an “unwanted” meaning

Just another 遊ぶ = to play thing

Usually もん can’t really be translated into “because”. The meaning is much subtler than that.

This is connected to the next part, she’s saying, that like everyone else, she too wants to do those things
Literally “I too, similar to everyone… (want to play…)”

No, it’s quite literally a foot race, what you see in the background actually

“This time” not “This thing”

This is a complex sentence, has an embedded sentence in it, so I’ll break it down a bit
きつねさんにはあとで[もう少し自由にお出かけできる]ようにお願いしに行きましょう
The embedded sentence:
もう少し自由にお出かけできる
もう少し - a bit more
自由に - freely
お出かけ - trip, going out
できる - to be able to
“To be able to go out a bit more freely”

So the rest
きつねさんには - Kitsune-san (target and has emphasis)
あとで - later
[…]ように - like [previous sentence]
お願い[する] - to ask
Xに行きましょう - let’s go do X
“Later let’s go and ask Kitsune-san, so you can go out more freely”

大変 is something like “tough;difficult”

お願い in itself is just a request, お願いに行く is “to go ask”
“We went to Kitsune-san’s place to ask, but…”

I think in this case that と is the conditional particle と
甘やかす is “to spoil someone;to pamper”
ドライアド様は甘やかすと - if you spoil Dryad-sama
大変なんだから - it’s bad

As for ダメです, it more commonly means “no I won’t” or something similar
so 絶対ダメです is more like “Absolutely not!”

No indication of a command, she’s just saying “we are going back”.

待つ is “to wait”, and なさい is an order, just a polite one

Just curious for own knowledge but would this now be more:

ちゃんと仕事はしているのよ = I do my job properly.

すぐに意識は大木に戻せるの = * My consciousness will immediately return to the large tree.

I will admit your translation makes more sense @Gorbit99 given what’s happening in the story but since both cases are present tense should it not be similar to the above or is there something I’m missing?

The point of those two corrections were the words I was explaining, so didn’t pay much attention to the tense. The first one of your sentences is I believe more correct, but the second one isn’t easy to translate while also keeping the structure.

Got it, and thanks. I suspected it was the case given your explanations but I wasn’t 100% so I just wanted to be sure so I appreciate it.

Based on others’ translations so far, my translations are roughly getting the gist. I do struggle with some of these longer sentences… I can make sense of each “chunk”/idea, but getting the whole sentence to make sense cohesively together is sometimes tough. I’m sure that continued exposure will help :slight_smile:

And the sentence breaks down like this:

[最初に[人影を見た]]場所に落ちていたんです
It’s talking about the place where she saw the human figure first

This is most likely the “for the time being” meaning of とりあえず instead

p45

後日 is supposed to be either later in general, or some other day. The last scene was at night, so “later that day” wouldn’t really work

Is the negative here being used similarly to something like “shouldn’t I return it?” I know negatives can be used to suggest things, like going to a movie or whatever.

A common type of sentence in Japanese is “If I don’t do this, it will be bad.”

It’s so common that a Japanese person can simply say “If I don’t do this…” and the “it will be bad” part is implied (from context).

That’s what we have here: “If I don’t return this… (it will be bad [because the owner won’t get it back]).”

Here’s one example of a complete sentence:

“If you don’t properly chew and eat your food, it’s bad.”

The girls need a plastic bottle for a project and it requires cutting the bottle in two.

The girl in the hat says, as she’s looking at the project instructions, “It we don’t cut the plastic bottle, it’s no good.”

Just popping in here to let people know I’m still along for the ride. I just finished the chapter. Lots of text and I didn’t have an awful lot of time this week… It really helped me that people earlier posted their interpretations and some additions to that, so I could check my understanding. Thank you so much everyone, for your effort to help out other!

I’m a couple of weeks late to posting transaltions here. I just kinda didn’t feel like reading recently. I’ve been going through some trouble finding the motivation to actually study outside of just doing reviews each day. Anyway, I’m starting to like this series now. It’s cute.

Pages 38-40

ドライアド様：こんなところまで来てくれるなんて。
Driad: You managed to come to this place.

ドライアド様：お母さんすごく嬉しいわ。
Driad: Your mother is very happy.

ドライアド様：何かご用かしら？
Driad: Might you need something?

オオカミ：最初に人影を見た場所に落ちていたんです。
Wolf: It had fallen at the place where I saw the figure.

オオカミ：届けてあげないと…
Wolf: I need to deliver this…

ドライアド様：ど…どこでそれを…！？
Driad: Wh…where did you get that…!?

Driad: That’s…if I get found out by Kitsune, I think she’ll get angry…

キツネ：ドライアド様仕事を放って勝手に遊びに行ったらだめですよ。
Fox: Driad, if you go out to play as you please and neglect your job, it’s useless.

オオカミ：きつねさん厳しいですもんね…
Wolf: Kitsune is rather strict, isn’t she…?

ドライアド様：このことはきつねちゃんには秘密に…！
Driad：Keep this a secret from Kitsune…!

ドライアド様：私もみんなと同じように。
Driad: Just like everybody, I also…

Pages 47-48

オオカミ：あの時は大変だったよね。
Wolf: That time, it was serious.

オオカミ：きつねさんの所へお願いに行ったけど…
Wolf: I went to make a request at Kitsune’s place…

キツネ：ドライアド様は甘やかすと大変なんだから！絶対ダメよ！
Fox: It’s terrible when you spoil her! It’s absolutely hopeless!

オオカミ：あの様子だと遊びに出かけるのは難しそう…
Wolf: It seems difficult to go out and play in that situation…

オオカミ：「その後しっかりと怒られた。」
Wolf: [After that, she got super angry.]

p38-40

The sentence literally translates to “There’s no feeling of a human’s presence in the forest”. But in reality, Dryad is saying, that she can’t feel it (since it’d be weird if she was talking about what someone else was feeling).

p47-48

大変 is rarely serious, it’s more along the lines of “difficult”, but in the sense of “that was difficult to deal with, huh”

I joined this book club to practice reading, but I’m enjoying the story of the manga too.
Since I’m catching up to week 7 soon, maybe I’ll try some translating too.

I thought about how to better reflect the "くれる なんて” in the middle and would suggest something like so:

“To come to this kind of place for me! Mother is super happy.”

I mean, please correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t +くれる turn 来て into “to ask of you to come” the way +みよう would turn 来て into “to try to come”?

The ‘!’ in my suggestion is what I think you’d do in English as an approximation of the expression carried by なんて. I think we’d rather use punctuation there, and in spoken language rely on intonation.

It doesn’t turn it into the “ask of sb. to do x”, it’s basically in a very literal way “you’ve given me the fact of coming here” aka “You’ve came here for me”. It’s the “to do something for somebody” form.
