Last frame of this week's part (page 107)

We’re reading volume 1 of this manga as part of the Absolute Beginner Book Club.

Vocabulary Sheet

The base for this vocab sheet was prepared using a fair amount of OCR/parsing.

Some notes for using/improving it:

  • Some words might have been recognized or parsed incorrectly, e.g. they are split even though they belong together, or they are simply wrong and aren’t even in the manga. Feel free to correct/remove those if you see them!
  • Words might be missing. Feel free to add them!
  • By default, translations in grey are auto-filled with a list of possible meanings (from a Wiktionary database). If you know the specific meaning in this context, feel free to fill it in! (It’ll turn black then.)

Discussion Guidelines

  • Please blur / hide any major events in the current week’s pages (however early they occur), like so: text here (that’s: [spoiler]text here[/spoiler]).
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked
  • Join the conversation — it’s fun!

Not all pages have page numbers on them, so you may need to find a page with numbers to determine which page you’re on.

This week introduces an elderly character whose speech differs from what we’ve seen so far. Don’t hesitate to ask questions!

Felt quite comfortable again this week, learned a good few new words as well.

Also how cute is 亀のおじいさん! They look like Mr Monopoly.

New words:

呼ぶ - To call (Already knew this one but didnt realise so still writing it down)
物知り - Well-informed person
山頂 - Summit (Of a mountain)
目印 - Landmark/Mark/Sign
連れる - To bring along
案内 - Guidance / leading the way
任せる - To entrust to someone (I have definitely heard this in Anime but first time reading it)
戻る - To turn back (half-way)
予感 - Premonition / Hunch

Small typo, should be chapter 5
I actually didn’t spot the first 4 chapter numbers, but somehow this week I saw it:

That’s what happens when I didn’t set the chapter number into the template I use for this. I’ll do that right now…

Thanks for catching that!

Can we make a manga about your template difficulties? It could be quite fun, and might go longer than one piece.

It’s translating time! (or at least attempts thereof)

p99

オオカミ:鳥さーん!亀のおじいさんのところに行かない?
Okami: Tori-san! Won’t we go to Grandpa Turtle-san’s place?

Note: I know おじいさん is used for older men in general and not just for her literal grandpa, but I’m going to translate it as grandpa for simplicity’s sake so as not to have to put this note in every future sentence.

p100

鳥さん:ビ?
Tori:
オオカミ:あのね 亀のおじいさんよばれた
オオカミ:いいものをみせてくれるんだって
Okami: That’s it. Grandpa turtle-san invited us
Okami: Good thing to be given, he said

オオカミ:かめのおじいさんはお医者さんで
オオカミ:すごく優しいんだよ
Okami: Grandpa turtle-san is a doctor
Okami: He’s very gentle

オオカミ:人間さんのこともよく知っていて
オオカミ:いつもお話してくれるんだ
Okami: Human’s thing also known (I guess “Grandpa Turtle knows about humans?”)
Okami: Always gives talking (Less literally: Always open to talk?)

オオカミ:今日はなんだろう?
Okami: What’s today, hmm? (Guess she’s speculating about what grandpa turtle invited them for)

p101

オオカミ:おじいさん!
Okami: Grandpa

オオカミ:きつさんとドライアド様も
きつね:遅いわよ
ドライアド:今来たところだよ
Okami: Kitsune-san and Dryad-sama too
Kitsune: Quickly
Dryad: We’ve come to the place now

合図:かめのおじいさん
かめ:よしよし
かめ:みんなそろうたようじゃな
合図:この森のお医者さんで物知り
Sign: Grandpa Turtle
Turtle: let’s go, let’s go
Turtle: Isn’t everyone here, right? (Less literal: Everyone is here)
Sign: This forests doctor with knowledge

(Side note: I typoed docker as doctor in my first draft here, guess I have containers on the brain after work this week)

p102

オオカミ:おじいさん!いいものってなあに
Okami: Grandpa! You said there would be a good thing

かめ:そうそうそうじゃ!いいものと言うのはな
Turtle: that’s so! With a good thing I said , right

かめ:山登りじゃ!
Turtle: Mountain climbing!

組:やめのぼり?
Group: Mountain climbing?

p103

かめ:うむ!山頂にある目印のところまで行くのじゃ
Turtle: Hmm! Mountain climbing to the landmark place (I cut out the go until part here, that’s implied by climbing to in English)

かめ:何かあるかは。。。ついてからのお楽しみじゃ
Turtle: Whatever is there? That’s the fun of

ドライアド:いってみたい!
オオカミ:たのしそう!
Dryad: I want to try go!
Okami: Seems fun!

くつね:私は反対よ
きつね:第一ドライアド様をつれまわすなんてー
Kitsune: I am opposed
Kitsune: First dryad sama goes around–

p104

オオカミ::みんなで行けば大丈夫 ね!
きつね:わかったわよ。。。
Okami: With everyone it’ll be ok, right!
Dryad: Understood…

かめ:それじゃ気をつけていくんじゃよ
オオカミ:行ってきます
Turtle: That’s it, take care and go
Okami: We’ll go and return

p105

ドライアド:道案内なら私に任せて!この森の守り神だもの
Dryad: (Please) leave guidance to me! (I am) This forest’s guardian deity!

ドライアド:こっちよ
Dryad: This way

オオカミ:ん。。。?
Okami: Hmm…?

p106

オオカミ:あの。。。ドライアド様
Okami: Umm… Dryad-sama?

ドライアド:うん?なぁに?
Dryad: yes? what?

オオカミ:さっきから
オオカミ:同じ場所に戻ってませんか
Okami: From just now, weren’t we at the same palce

p107

ドライアド:えっうそ!?
Dryad: eee… no way!?

オオカミ:あの丸い木もう何回も見たような
Okami: That round tree, how many times have we seen it?

きつね:まあ。。。こうなる予感はしてたけど
Kitsune: ugghh… I have a hunch this is becoming (much less sure on this one, but it’s the only sentence I can make out of the pieces I have that makes sense)

Honestly, I was a little worried last week with people talking about a new character with a different speaking style. I was picturing something like Ruri’s dad in the last book, where once he showed up I just couldn’t follow his sections at all. But this is probably the easiest week so far for me? There was some respectful language around this character, but it was no big deal. The hardest sentence this week is probably from Kitsune on p107. (Of course, assuming my translations aren’t way off)

Here the verb is 見せてくる, or the てくる form of 見せる, “to show”. “[He] said, thats he’ll show us something good”

“Kind” is probably better fitting here

よく知っていて - well knows → knows a lot about
“He also (among other things) knows a lot about humans”

てくれる is also “do someone a favor” “do something for someone else’s sake”. Roughly “He always talks with us”, but with the meaning that Ookami chan likes that.

p101

That would be 速い, 遅い is “slow”, but in these circumstances it’s “[you’re] late”

p102

I assume this is a freeform translation, but just in case, “What is that good thing [you mentioned]” would be more accurate

p107

This isn’t a question. A lot of these “how many X” words, when put before “も”, they get the meaning of “many X” or “several X”. In this case this is “We’ve seen this round tree several times”.

予感する is to “have a hunch”. This is something like “I had a hunch it would be like this”

It’s a pretty slow week in this thread so far…? This week’s pages went pretty quickly for me. I just had to do some vocab look-up here and there. I have a couple of things to add, and maybe to double-check. I’m mostly basing these off araigoshi’s translations up top, and seeing where I could add something.

p.101

ドライアド:今来たところだよ
=> "We [only] came here [just] now.

I recognized the grammar pattern ~たところ. This does not refer to a place, but to a point in time and means “just finished doing”. Dryad-sama softens Kitsune-sans remark of ‘You’re late’, but confiding that they themselves only only arrived a moment ago.

p.102

かめ:そうそうそうじゃ!いいものと言うのはな
かめ:山登りじゃ!

I interpreted these as one complete sentence. “The good thing I talk[ed] about, is [は topic marker] [な, particle], mountain climbing.”

p.103

かめ:何かあるかは。。。ついてからのお楽しみじゃ
=> “What is there, is what you have looking forward to upon [literally: after] arriving.”

p.104

ドライアド:道案内なら私に任せて!この森の守り神だもの
I think we saw the だもの pattern earlier, with the meaning “because”.
=> “As for showing the way, leave it to me. Because I’m this forest’s guardian spirit!”

Although less common (from what I can tell), パタン does indeed show up from time to time!

I’m finding this true for me now as well.

Saw this one just today.

Thinking about the “How are you doing so far?” poll, I decided to go for “I’m doing well”.

Because it’s not the linguistical challenge that makes me struggle. :joy: I’m struggling only with my time management, and I think that is not what the poll is about, right?

ha, it’s both for me

I did a quick read through this week. Wanted to share a big win I had.

I read this panel easily! I know it’s super basic but it was really cool to just… read it and not have to think. Manga is really nice because the visuals do a lot of heavy contextual lifting.

I definitely skipped a few bits where I wasn’t getting it immediately, but I’m planning on going back over once I catch up with the current week.

I had the same reaction! It’s such a great feeling when you start to “just get” a meaning without having to tediously translate each grammar point.

I love panels like this, where it’s very self-contained and easy to understand if you know all the parts. Encountering these makes clear that progress is being made on one’s Japanese-learning journey.

I was meant to post this on Friday. I ended up being busier than usual. This wasn’t actually that bad of a section this time. I got through it really quick. Although, because of that, I could see myself making some dumb mistakes.

Pages 101-103

オオカミ:亀のおじいさんのところに行かない?
Wolf: You won’t go to the old turtle’s place?

オオカミ:亀のおじいさんに呼ばれたの。
Wolf: I was summoned by the old turtle.

オオカミ:いいものを見せてくれるんだって!
Wolf: He said he’ll show us something good!

オオカミ:亀のおじいさんはお医者さんで。
Wolf: He’s a doctor.

オオカミ:すごく優しいんだよ。
Wolf: He’s very kind.

オオカミ:人間さんのこともよく知っていて。
Wolf: He also knows a lot about humans.

オオカミ:いつもお話してくれるんだ。
Wolf: We always talk with him.

オオカミ:今日はなんだろ?
Wolf: I wonder what he wants today?

ドライアド様:今来たところだよ。
Driad: You came here just now!

カメ:みんなそろったようじゃな。
Old Turtle: It seems that everybody has gathered.

この森のお医者さんで物知り
Has extensive knowledge as this forest’s doctor.

Pages 104-106

オオカミ:いいものってなあに?
Wolf: What’s the good thing!?

カメ:いいものと言うのはな…
Old Turtle: The good thing I mentioned is…

カメ:山登りじゃ!
Old Turtle: Mountain climbing!

カメ:山頂にある目印のところまで行くのじゃ。
Old Turtle: You’ll go to the landmark on the summit.

カメ:何があるかは…
Old Turtle: As for what there is…

カメ:着いてからのお楽しみじゃ。
Old Turtle: …look forward to it upon your arrival.

キツネ:私は反対よ。
Fox: I’m opposed to this.

キツネ:第一ドライアド様を連れまわすなんてー
Fox: First of all, taking Driad along is just…

オオカミ:みんなで行けば大丈夫!
Wolf: If everyone goes, it’ll be fine!

カメ:それじゃ。気をつけて行くんじゃよ。
Old Turtle: In that case, go and take care.

Pages 107-109

ドライアド様:道案内なら私に任せて!
Driad: As for guidance, just leave it to me!

ドライアド様:この森の守り神だもの!
Driad: I am the guardian deity of this forest!

オオカミ:さっきから同じ場所に戻ってませんか?
Wolf: Won’t we return to the same place from a moment ago?

オオカミ:もう何回も見たような…
Wolf: It feels like we’ve seen it many times already…

キツネ:こうなる予感はしてたけど…
Fox: I had a hunch that this was going on, but…

p101-103

This is more likely the “why don’t we” form again

p107-109

This sounds a bit weird in future tense. “Didn’t we return to the same place as a bit ago?”

More like “I had a feeling this was going to happen” (lit.: “I had a feeling it will become like this”)

Finished this section!
This is the first time I’ve run into じゃ as a sentence ender. I looked it up and it seems to be in replacement of だ ?
Other than that this section was fine. I do a lot of ignoring the grammar I don’t know and just getting the gist based on the vocab and pictures, but there are definitely sentences I can read no problem.
