So finished the book there. I’ll be posting my usual translation attempts in a moment, but one thing that really surprised me is that Okami sleeps in a house. I guess I just assumed all the forest denizens slept on piles of leaves or something, or Dryad phased into her tree etc.

Ookami to me seems more like a lost puppy with some mistaken identity issues, than a proper wolf

She’s feeling somewhat dizzy, is what she’s saying. “なんだか” here is “somewhat”

Here って is the continuation grammar point, but here it has a sort of “now that X” meaning
“Now that Ookami-chan came down with a cold, what should I do?”

p147

These Japanese always overcomplicating even a single “What” :slight_smile:

p153

ただ is “ordinary”. “I only have an ordinary cold”. In kanji it’s 只, not 正.

p155

This is closer to “With this I won’t be lonely” (literally: “If this is, I might not be lonely”)

p161

Probably closer to “secret” here, which is why Ookami was happy that nobody was there (seemingly)

p164

There are a few typos there, it’s ちょうちょ (notice the small よ), 蝶々ちょうちょう is “butterfly”.
It’s also 決けっして, not 欠けつして
The rest of the sentence is something like “I didn’t see you chasing that at all”.

There’s no オオカミちゃん in the second speech bubble, only “そんなに慌ててどうしたんですか?”, which is literally: “Hurrying like that is why?”, or “Why are you in such a hurry?”

You had a typo here. It does not say あそび, but あそぼ. I took this to be an abreviation of あそぼう.
=> Sorry, I’m feeling unwell today. Let’s play again another time.

p.145

わけ gives a meaning or reason, which isn’t represented in this translation. Also, 来た is came, not to go. In this case, the turtle is talking about tori-san coming to see him.
=> “I see, so that’s [the reason] why you came here.”

かめ：今から診察に行くとするかの
I think a sligtly better translation here might be “I suppose I’ll go do a medical examination right away.” That includes the meaning of verb-とする, from what I understand.

p.151

行って is not to come, but to go. And the construction てもいいですか can usually be translated with “May I…”.
=> “May I go out and play [if it becomes] tomorrow?”

Well what a lovely manga that was to read! Thoroughly enjoyed reading through that week by week and found it relatively comfortable! Looking forward to starting on Horimiya.

New Words/Kanji:

ぼーっと - In a daze
診察 - Medical examination
慌てる - To become confused
やけに - Awfully / Frighfully
騒がしい - Noisy
しばらく - For a while
寝込む - To be confined to one’s bed
大勢 - Crowd of people
あっという間に - In the blink of an eye

Oh, so we have. I guess I just assumed that was like, shared forest property that Dryad and Kitsune operated. Or I just wasn’t paying very much attention to the illustrations at that point.

This was a lovely manga, and extremely beginner friendly. I feel this has just surpassed Rental Oniichan in the easiest-manga-I’ve-read category.

Rental Oniichan was my go-to recommendation for first-time readers[1] before I discovered Ookami-chan.

Compared with Ookami, Rental feels like some advanced tomb no beginner should consider approaching.

But it’s still my number two recommendation for all the reasons it used to be my number one recommendation:

  1. Having a story (more motivational to continue versus slice-of-life).
  2. Being fairly short (four volumes).
  3. Having mostly simple situations (very realistic).
  4. Steadily increasing in difficulty from one volume to the next, so absolute beginners don’t feel complacent (for lack of a better word) with their progress.

[1] I typically recommend following the book club threads alongside reading the manga.

I kinda dropped out of the club having no time to read, but I binged the whole volume yesterday from start to finish trying to just read without consulting a dictionary. It was a blast, just sped through it as if readyng a book in English. Definitely the best beginner manga I’ve ever read. Thank you and everyone who participated, I learned a lot and it’s amazing to go back to the manga 2 months after and see my progress.

Just finished without tooooo much more trouble than needing to consult the dictionary.

That was an adorable story, thanks again for those running things and involved in picking it. I’m looking forward to Horimiya (slammed through the anime as fast as humanly possible a few weeks ago) and the spin-off for vol 2 of this.

I want to continue with Horimiya, but I might have trouble having enough time to read every week considering that school is starting again. Hmm, I think I’ll try though.

And it’s over. I really enjoyed this manga. Simple enough to read at a pretty fast pace and super cute. I’m going to be reading the 2nd volume in my own time and I’m reading some other manga at the moment so I might not do Horimiya. I have no interest in that series. If something comes up in the future with ABBC, I’ll give it a go. Anyway, translation time!

Wolf: I’m in a bit of a daze…

The translation is theoretically correct here, but what this て form is trying to say is a sort of cause for why Ookami won’t play that day. “My condition’s bad today, so let’s play some other time!”

This in this context is trying to say “Well, then please do that for me”. This sort of pattern isn’t very common, but it pops up from time to time.
