Solving Crosswords for Fun and Profit

Hey all!I just got back from a trip to Japan.

If you want to see my travels, I kept a blog here.

Anyway, while I was there, I decided to pick up a book of crosswords, for a different kind of practice, and boy is it kinda tricky. I was thinking maybe we could make it a group effort, and everyone could pitch in and solve them together.

Here’s the first puzzle:

Answers are in katakana. (I saw a kanji-only book at one point, and I considered buying it, but decided to pass in the end.)

I’m gonna start with 11 Across. クテン, yes?

29 down ドル
26 across バトン

I think 10 down is ソクイ
5 across カイ
25 down アルバイト
14 across マニュアル

1 across might be フウトウ

8 across シリーズ

Aww, I should have gotten that. Didn’t even spot the オーストラリア in my first glance across the clues. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ooo, ooo, that makes 22-down メニュー

Wonder if I need to periodically re-post the grid with answers filled in so we can keep track of what’s going on…

18 down ニシンスウ
19 across シール
20 across スパイ
23 down パノラマ
15 across コウノトリ

30 down リシ

3 across リンゴ which makes 13 down ゴマ
4 across トソ

Whew, this is going almost too fast for me to keep up.

Huh. Does an apple a day keep the doctor away in Japanese too?

Is 34-across perhaps エル? As in, LDK? Then if 35-across is カジ, that’d make 34-down エンカ. Dunno if I’m grasping at straws, though.

I guess? ゴ makes sense with 13 down

Aye, that it does.

I’m also impressed you knew トソ. All I could think of was アマザケ, and that certainly didn’t fit.

Aha. 15-down is コト

Well, I couldn’t remember the name at first. I only remembered that they drink some plant-based alcohol for good-luck on new year’s eve.

Coukd 32 down be シイン (consonant)?

Aha, no, it’s エフダ, innit? Then 29-across can be ドダイ

Figured as much. I can’t solve a single one of those! Way too hard for me, haha.

Yeah, I’m not doing great myself. I’ve never even gotten the hang of Japanese-Japanese dictionaries, and this is pretty much the same except we only get the definitions, not the words. :slightly_smiling_face:

How about トゲ for 2 across?

Oh, perfect. I was literally just now mulling over 2-across, and I completely failed to spot the connection between the listed items.
