ブルーロック Vol 3 | Manga | 065 → 105/191pgs |
Two more chapters of Bluelock. These ones were fairly easy with only 5-10 new words per chapter. I’m also finding now that my kanji knowledge is getting to a nice point where I can make an educated guess about some unknown words, and it’s very rewarding when it’s correct!
Learnt this new word this morning:
綱渡り つなわたり, walking a tight rope/walking on thin ice
which also lead me to learn the english word funambulist (tight-rope walker) which I have never heard before!
I keep confusing 網 and 綱 lmao. I was like, ‘net-walker? Is that some kind of 13375p34k hax0r jargon i don’t know?’
I’ve never seen either of those kanji until this morning They are similar aren’t they!!
Looks like I’m about a year away from them in WK as well ha

i’m so glad the bravely default wiki is as robust as it is, makes looking things up so much easier. they’ve got translations for all the journal entries too so i don’t have to swap back and forth between languages all the time! started tales of symphonia (the manga). i’ve not played tales of symphonia (the game) so this should be interesting. my first full furigana anything in a while
all from bravely default:
棍 - cane, stick, club. rare term, finding it google’s IME took a while. related to 杖
屈強 - robust, brawny, muscular, strong
忽然 - sudden, abrupt, unexpected. usu. as こつ然 i think but was in full kanji here
霊験あらたか - miraculous, wonder-working, magical
早起きは三文の徳 - the early bird gets the worm. they swapped 文 for the in-game currency. the english translation cut this entire section
also swapped my emoji for bravely default
oh good it’s not just me
Today’s reading: p. 41-44 of よつばと! Vol. 4.
仕掛け: しかけ: device, trap, setup
針: はり: hook
おいおい: gradually, by degrees
みみず: earthworm
ちょん: slight movement, poke
刺す: さす: to pierce, to prick
ぜいたく: luxury, extravagance
いそうな所: a place where [they] are/appear to be?
繰り返す: くりかえす: to repeat
The reading of this chapter is painfully slow: a lot of vocabulary about fishing, which is interesting but not something I’ve encountered before.
One of the reasons that I’m a pescatarian and not a vegetarian is that I am capable of catching and killing my own fish (whereas I would balk at having to kill a chicken, for example); nevertheless, I’m finding bits of this episode a little grisly! The kids, aside from Miura-chan, seem to be holding up under this pretty well.
さ・さす・しむ today.
I finally finished volume 2 of 古見さん, which I started nearly a year ago, before I went rogue and stopped reading for a long time. Feels good to get that out of the way. Not sure what kept me so long; I do enjoy this manga!

So things haven’t gone to plan the last few days (health issues) so I’ve not kept up with my dailies. However I’m not going to give up and will be back on the saddle with some more Tadoku!
Also had >150 reviews stacked up on my Wanikani so I’ve finally cleared that now!
I just found out about this challenge today, but I started trying to read more a few weeks ago.
Manga still gives me some trouble so I mainly use Satori Reader. I’ll only track the days after starting the challenge.

Day 16!
Another 23k characters of Chaos;Head, this ending is drawing me in way more than the previous so I’m back to feeling a little more excitement about the VN, heh. It’s always going new places. And knowing the general universe connects with all the other science adventure VNs, which I need to move on to sometime after this, I’m excited for the broader world seeds being planted.
Mined way too many words today lol, one of which is 釜 (かま, an iron pot/kettle). I like how the kanji looks. And the sentence it came from was kinda cool. I guess spoilers, kinda, but I just like how this is expressed:
足許の床が崩れ、さながら地獄の釜が蓋を開けたかのように、波多野というあまりに小さな存在を呑み込んだ

Found some new grammar points that I hadn’t studied.
Can now differentiate the よう in ように from ようにと and Verb[よう]+とする.
Finding new grammar points in context and then immediately going to Bunpo to do that lesson I think helps really reinforce it.
I’m also thinking about trying to find an Anki deck to up my vocabulary. I was hesitant to initially do this before reaching a higher WK level (because of the kanji), but I think it’s necessary at this point to study vocabulary independently of what’s presented to me in WK.
Sigh I wish I could just run a script that helped me make all non-WK “common” words on Jisho into an Anki deck LOL.

I strongly recommend making your own decks based off what you’re reading especially if you feel you’re going to reread things or the words are going to come up again. You don’t need to add every word you don’t know (indeed you shouldn’t, you’ll burn out), but just anything that stands out as you looking up a lot or that you recognise from another work, etc.
I’ve made them before, but I didn’t like how they were so minimalist (or how long it took to make them lmao).
I guess that shouldn’t matter, though.
Oof, yeah, I should follow this example. This is probably what burned me out with Pokemon Red. Just every word added to a deck without context… I’ll have to sit down eventually this weekend to try again to make my own personal deck again, thank you.
there’s a fair amount of customisation you can do if you learn css or how to fuck with the card layout stuff etc. i’ve been meaning to make a topic for ages but probably like the cooking thread i’ll be beaten to the punch, lmao.
but yeah honestly time spent > everything else tbh. even if you ‘forget’ cards you already made (fail them so many times they drop out) it’s fine, if it’s an important word you’ll see it again and you just make another card and eventually it sticks. and eventually this corpus builds and builds and builds…
