I have the itch to sell potions to people. These people keep telling me they can’t get into their houses and I’m an alchemist not a locksmith…
I had a funny moment where the man asked for a potion for 秘め事 and I thought he wanted 不可視 but apparently he wanted 性欲. I spent a lot of time looking at the text for 不可視 because it just looks wrong, but I can’t think of it being anything else since I’m sure it’s supposed to be invisibility…

錠前 = lock
根っこ = plant roots
薬草 = medicinal herbs
邸宅 = large house, mansion, residence, wk51
溶岩 = lava (hype for finding this in the wild right before I get it in lessons)
Also, to double back on this, it’s actually worth adding the context. You can hide it behind a cloze field or use CSS to de-emphasise the info, but I’ve never seen anything wrong with keeping context as part of the prompt for Anki cards.
this nhk article, which taught me the word pantograph!
had an eye test this morning so didn’t get chance for tales or bravely default. i did take my physical copy of すべてがFになる with me tho and skimmed the first 15 or so pages of that while i waited. not sure how much of it i took in in between listening to the general chatter of a specsavers but i tried my best!
words that stood out
all fromすべてがFになる
九九 - times table
女史 - lady (of high social status, in this case a scholar)
華奢 - dainty, delicate, slim and elegant
not to jump into this convo but i’m seconding this! i initially didn’t add context to my cards, and of my leech cards a good chunk of them are ones that didn’t have context or a jp dictionary entry attached. it takes more time, but it’s worth it imo!

Reading a physical book for once! It feels somewhat easier and quicker than reading on kindle (some of that might just be psychological, but also it does have the benefit of me no longer having the compulsion to double check the reading of words that I already know the reading of, but you know, just to make sure…)
Chinese “graded” reader has full Pinyin, and I feel it’s a good idea for a previously Kanji learner. Vocabularies not expected to know yet sometimes appear, but are given per-word translation and rarely a sentence example.
VNs today - half chapter from Loopers and a little from Clannad on Switch, and a little from Island on PC.
Reading VNs on Switch vs PC feels like two different mediums in some regards. On Switch, I don’t look up much. I read the sentence in Japanese, try to understand the kanji and the general meaning, and switch to English to check my understanding. On PC, I use Textractor and look up every word I don’t understand. Extensive vs intensive reading. Both are valuable, even though they are different!
i just finished reading volume 2 of 気になってる人が男じゃなかった! The art is super pretty and unique and the story interesting enough, highly recommend. I noticed that I struggled significantly less than I did with volume 1 so I’m proud of myself! Now onto ウスズミの果て as it’s been on my tbr for a couple of months and its wanikani bookclub just began this week so I thought it’d be a perfect opportunity :DD
む today. I noticed it has a lot of overlap with the subjunctive in Latin. Fascinating how such different languages can have such similarities in their grammar.
よつばと! 1 Chapter 4 and Chapter 5.
Getting sad that I am finishing this soon. Will be a while until I can order the rest of the volumes. Holding off for another day to read the final two chapters. Surprisingly getting easier and did not have so much trouble here, even with the occasional dad-language that gets thrown in.
Small win: inferring the meaning of 競走 by just having known the two kanji independently.
Woo, finally finished カタログ. It’s still a bit above my comfortable difficulty level but that’s alright for a ‘challenge’ read. I think it’s my fifth book this year? I really enjoyed it, a lot more than 不思議駄菓子屋 which has basically the same premise, though not sure if that was just that I was doing this one at my own pace.
Read a chapter of 悪役令嬢おじさん last night, which was my first ‘bonus’ reading for quite a while lol.
I think I may start trying to read 逆転裁判 next (with the help of a script probably, since those are available online and it’s easier than fucking with a texthooker, plus I already have the switch version…)
