Mostly read in English today. I read Whale Talk by Chris Crutcher, which was amazing, and I started Icebreaker by Hannah Grace, which is all right so far. Right now it’s looking like it’s in “it’s good and I’m not mad I read it, but I don’t want to keep a copy” territory.

• 7 pages of 2.43, finishing ch 3-2 and starting 3-3 FESTIVE MAGIC, and leaving off on pg 258. I gotta tell ya, after years of only knowing お盆 as the festival, it’s really weird seeing it mean “tray.”

Teasing Ookuma with a small, soft smile? Yeah, those are definitely the actions of a man who doesn’t care.

(I know I make him sound like a tsundere sometimes but I swear he’s not. It is true though that he claims he only cares about the team insofar as it’s important to Oda, but it’s clear he does care about his other teammates too. Maybe not so much their senpai because of their treatment of Oda—at least, not from what little we learn of their first two years—but their kouhai, yeah. Including Chika, which will happen in part 2. And maybe not the sport itself, certainly not enough to continue playing when it’s not with/for Oda, but I don’t think he regrets his decision. Getting himself elected as the vice prez of the student council on the other hand, though…)

It took me every bit of willpower to open a book today, which is unusual for me. Just kept sitting down to read and then getting immediately distracted by things the whole day

I picked up speed in パレード again. Mysteries are solved and new mysteries emerge. The narrator changed again, but this time it’s a boy. For some reason that I haven’t been able to pinpoint, I have found the women harder to read than men in this book. It’s not grammar or vocabulary, so I’m not sure what it is. Maybe it’s just their thoughts that are more complicated.

I have noticed for a while, for reading. A goal is to not need a dictionary. Well, probably try to overdo not-checking first, before eventually relax the restrictions like half a year later.

Words of the day

• とぼとぼ(.) = (on-mim) totteringly, wearingly
• ひらひら(.) = (on-mim) fluttering; flapping; waving (e.g. in the wind)
• ずどんずどん(.) = (on-mim) thud (like heavy object) / bang (like a gun)
• 落(お)ちぶれる = to be ruined down to poverty. Probably feels like touching (触(ふ)れる) the inevitable conclusion (落(お)ち)?
• 合間(あいま)を縫(ぬ)う = to make good use of one’s spare moments
• 跡形(あとかた)も無(な)く = without leaving an trace
• ～総出(そうで) = everyone together
• 相俟(あいま)って = together, coupled with. In full Kanji form without Furigana. Yomichan grammar is picked up from と相(あい)まって. Well, today I saw a different example with a different particle too.
  • The Kanji appears to just mean to wait (俟(ま)つ = 待(ま)つ)
• 幽(かす)か = faint = 微(かす)か. I keep forgetting how to read this one… 僅(わず)か?
• 介抱(かいほう) = nursing; looking after
• 極貧(ごくひん) = extreme poverty. No Rendaku.
• 火(ひ)の車(くるま) = desperate (financial) circumstances / fiery chariot, delivering to the depths of hell.
• 内職(ないしょく) = side job
• 労災(ろうさい) = work-related injury
• 慰謝料(いしゃりょう) = consolation money
• 絶交(ぜっこう) = breaking of relationship; the end of a relationship
• 詠唱(えいしょう) = singing; chanting
• 寄席(よせ) = entertainment hall
• 反物(たんもの) = fabric, cloth, to make a kimono
• 燭台(しょくだい) = a candlestand. Has Furigana. First Kanji from 蝋燭(ろうそく) (= candle), just read a little differently.
• 腐朽(ふきゅう) = rotting down. Has Furigana. Second Kanji from 朽(く)ちる (in 朽木(くちき)).
• 列柱(れっちゅう) = columns (柱(はしら)) arranging in rows. Has Furigana.
• 郷(ごう)に入(い)っては郷(ごう)に従(したが)え = When in Rome (?), do as Romans do. Obviously this isn’t Rome, but rather 郷(ごう) or 故郷(こきょう), so not where all roads lead to. Also, not 入(はい)る (這入(はい)る), but shorter than that.

• 三ツ星カラーズ ch 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72 done with volume 8 and done with the series! got on a real roll! Been a while since i just sat down and read a volume cover to cover in japanese; felt good

I really enjoyed this series. It hit just the right difficulty level of being easy enough for me to comfortably read most of the time, but with enough non-standard vocabulary (thank you 琴葉ちゃん) and jokes/wordplay that made it not entirely trivial or a “free” read. Mostly just cute 癒し系 stuff, but focusing almost entirely on the kids. That’s the main difference I’d draw between it and よつばと！, both are series about the marvels of kids being kids, but the adult framing is more explicit in よつばと！as we get more moments to step back and hear/see how the grown-ups in the story react to the unrestrained childlike wonder. Overall really enjoyed it, would definitely recommend.

Yeah… Icebreaker is firmly in “it’s fine but not good enough to want it on my shelf” territory.

I’m mostly finished with it, and the story’s not bad, but there’s more smut than I was expecting from a book written by a “fluffy comfort book author” and it’s getting boring, plus the writing’s off sometimes, and not in a “Brit trying to write for Americans” way. I don’t think. Some of it feels like she’s too old to be writing modern-day college students, though I suppose it could just be British young-person slang being different from US young-person slang (I don’t know how old she is, nor am I versed in British dialects or slang). But also there’re issues with grammar—one type of phrase in particular. I don’t know what it’s called, but it’s the one where the verb is in -ing form and rather than having its own subject, the subject is in the clause it’s attached to—either the subject of said clause, or the closest noun physically to the phrase. Like:

Not bothering to answer my question, I feel him nibble my ear.

Uh, huh? I feel like it would be fine it the -ing clause were at the end, since “him,” which refers to the one doing the not answering, is closer. Or, y’know, change the main clause to “he nibbles (at) my ear.” Because as it is, its subject should be I. And this isn’t just an occasional thing; it happens a lot, and it throws me off every time. It’s not as if she never puts the -ing clauses at the end of the sentence, either. It’s more like she’s afraid of starting too many sentences with the main clause and/or a noun or pronoun referring to a character so she incorrectly does stuff like this to avoid it.

There’s also the fact that the love interest’s go-to pet name is “baby,” but that’s a personal thing. (I can’t explain why “babe” is fine with me but “baby” is infantilizing and gross when “babe” is literally a shortening of “baby,” but there ya have it.) (Though the finding most of the smut boring and pointless thing is also a personal thing for that matter…)

模擬店 (もぎてん) [n.] refreshment booth; refreshment stand; snack bar. Literally it’s “mock-store,” which makes sense but is still kinda funny to me.

I don’t doubt it, but for some reason it’s just never really appealed to me. It’s not as if I dislike basketball animanga—I love KuroBasu and Ahiru no Sora—so I dunno.
