I just had a consideration that I think it’s worth sharing. I’ve been reading a lot recently, and I’ve been doing it for months on a daily basis, but this week I began doing something I wanted to try since when I started studying japanese In summer 2022, which is, watching anime with subtitles and translating it bit by bit as I would do with a manga.
I’m amazed by how fast I’m improving in Jap since I’ve been doing this, it’s like something just clicked, wow. And at first it was completely different from reading because writing and speaking have a different style even when the writing is quoting a speech line in manga. Having the tone of voice and the pauses between words helps making sense of a speech structure that then automatically transfers to reading. I would suggest anyone doing such practice as well as reading. After all babies learn to listen and to speak before learning to read (may not have sense, but sounds like it does).

Note that I don’t mean just do passive or moderately active listening practice, like watching an anime, recognizing the sentence structure and picking some words here and there, occasionally. I mean the most active form of listening possible, I’m not going to the next sentence if I didn’t make sense of the previous line, both logically and grammatically. Incredible results

I’ve decided not to have BU$TAFELLOWS self control so I started on Mozu’s route, very interesting so far! I didn’t get through a whole lot today but I am certainly intrigued to see where it goes

パレード, 31-42%

パレード is going relatively slowly. The weekend was busy with other things, but still, managing only 3 pages per day felt like reading nothing at all. Like so many of the books I’ve read lately, this one also changes narrator with each chapter, and each change feels extra hard in the beginning. Some of the characters’ thoughts also feel a little difficult to follow (for example, currently reading about a “self” we construct to be with others, and how you are never exactly yourself when sharing an apartment with other people, and how since they may also be using “constructed selves”, maybe there’s no one (real) in the apartment after all…).

It’s still unclear whether there will be an overarching plot or whether the author just takes this opportunity to give us a glimpse of several different young people’s lives. There is a vague sense of mystery, but it’s unclear whether it will lead anywhere or if it’s there just for flavour.

Oda and Aoki are so cute

Context: It’s the cultural festival, and some of the guys from the boys’ team have come to Ibara’s class, which is doing a maid café. The girl on hall duty says stuff like “ご主人様二名様ご帰宅でーす!” when customers arrive.

「主人が帰宅して金払って料理を注文するって、どういう状況なんや？」

小田先輩が青木先輩のほうに身体を傾けて訊いた。

「東京発祥のそういう文化や。深く考えんとけや」

青木先輩は一応システムをわかっているらしい。

「文化……のことはようわからんな……。東京って言われるとなおさらや。牛鍋みたいなもんか」

という小田先輩の納得の仕方に「ぶっ」と青木先輩が噴きだした。なにか急にツボに入ったようだ。手の甲で口を覆って横を向いたがまだ肩が震えている。

And Oda thinks Aoki doesn’t actually like him and has just been going along with his “selfish whims” these past three years, yet Aoki’s over here calling him by a nickname and basically being his guard dog and just in general being very fond of him like all the time. But he just thinks that’s just how Aoki is. They’re in different classes and came from different middle schools, so he didn’t know him before and they don’t see each other all that much outside of volleyball, so he doesn’t know how Aoki is most of the time and that the way he is with him is special. When some of Aoki’s default misanthropy shows through, Oda’s just like, “Well he’s got a lot on his plate right now, he’s tired and stressed, he deserves to bitch some.” When Aoki told him, “Fundamentally, I’m someone who does things with ulterior motives,” Oda—well, out loud, he was like, “‘Ulterior motives’?” but his attitude is like “What are you on about, you’re not selfish, I’m the one who’s selfish.” But Oda’s a lot less selfish than he thinks he is and Aoki’s a lot more selfish than Oda gives him credit for, it’s just that since the first day they met, a lot of Aoki’s selfishness has extended to him, too. He thinks Aoki’s just being nice and going along with him, but Aoki’s not a nice person! Which isn’t to say he’s a bad person; he’s not. He’s just not nice. (I can totally see him becoming a kick-ass defense attorney with his fancy-dandy KyōDai law degree. Although I can also just as easily see him becoming a kick-ass prosecutor.)

Oda, you are an idiot. You’re his favorite person, of course he wants to stay in contact after high school too!

I can’t wait until I get to the end of this novel (not this vol, part 2), because Oda feels guilty for being selfish (as he sees it), yet he still tells Aoki he’s gonna continue to be selfish for a little longer and asks him to continue playing volleyball with him in college, and then the look Aoki gives him in the anime that’s just so incredibly fond and like ‘of course there’s no way I wasn’t going to’? That “Fundamentally, I’m someone who does things with ulterior motives” / “‘Ulterior motives’?” / “It’s all right if you don’t understand” exchange killed me more in the novel than the anime even though that portion of the exchange wasn’t even all that different, so yeah. I’m expecting this one to kill me too. (That exchange is also how I learned 下心.)

Then I also can’t wait to get glimpses of them in college, but that’s in book 4. I’ve still got the HaruKou Arc before then. Which will be entirely new content because the anime only covered (much of) the first two novels!

(If anyone not Kanno and Ibara become canon in this series, I feel like it’s most likely to be these two, but I’m not expecting anything. There are some bits that are pretty gay in a way where you’re like, “That has to be on purpose, right?!” but it’s still not a romance, much less a BL, so chances are slim to none. But even if they weren’t, my policy is generally to go in expecting nothing anyway lmao)

Only had about 3-4 hrs available for reading, and it was uh not very well spent lol so that’s as far as I got.
