Today was another busy day somehow, so just a teeny bit of BU$TAFELLOWS for the sake of it

Work and life continue to be very busy so I have another day of reading ~10 pages of この本を盗む者は and not finishing it. I have less than 20 pages left so going to try to get through it tomorrow and stop torturing myself with small reads.

Also I’ve been reading the 赤川次郎 book on my bedside table (forget the title) because the Ginza cop drama just hasn’t really interested me much. The story has all the normal tropes and characters of the genre and yet somehow manages to feel very bland so I never feel inclined to read on. Maybe I’ll get back to it, maybe I won’t.

On the 28th, I read a bit in the grammar dictionary, and then yesterday (29th) I finished this week’s reading. I can’t remember ever reading through grammar terms in that way. I knew some of them, knew the concept if not the name for several others. I don’t think there was actually anything entirely new for me there, except for like what was classified as what.

Yesterday I also finally finished an anthology I’ve been reading on and off for a couple of weeks. Can’t really recommend it since I think I skipped half or more of the stories because they didn’t catch me. The title is in my home post if interested despite this. I also read a bit more of The War of Art by Steven Pressfield.

March is almost over y’all. And as often is the case, I do slow down a lot during the off-month of the challenges. But I’m trying to ramp up again, because I really do want to read more every day. I’m just crappy at choosing it over other leisurely activities, mostly due to inertia.

A bit of an early post today (the post I did earlier today was for yesterday and the day before that, this one is for today!). Read a good chunk of Loopers chapter 11. It feels like the chapter should end soon, but this chapter is double the length of the previous one, and I don’t think I’ve read double that?

So maybe I’m just hitting a mini denouement in the middle of the chapter? Or maybe I didn’t realize how much I’ve read… but I don’t think so.

For nonfiction, I just read some more The War of Art by Steven Pressfield.

Today I had a terrible headache so I didnt read as much as I was hoping to.
I finished chapter 67 of Shadow’s House, but I was planning to read Chapter 68 today too and I didn’t.

This puts me a little behind the book club, but I’m sure I can catch up over the weekend.

I finished この本を盗む者は and it was great! I ended up giving it 4/5 stars on Natively because it did have some bits that dragged for me, but overall I thought it was a good book and I would happily read more from this author.

I also realized last night my bedtime 赤川次郎 book is actually a short story collection. What’s up with short story collections not mentioning that on the cover? I feel like it should say 短編集 or something for idiots like me who don’t quite grasp that the summary on the back is talking about multiple stories and not multiple plot lines.

But anyways I’m happy with either way because I do love short stories.

CDJapan was a lot closer to 1 week than 3 in getting everything, because my order shipped today lol. Well at least I’ve finished 2.43 now! Even if it barely counts since it’s only the first half of the second novel but eh. I’m gonna try to focus on 夢十夜 next. With any luck I’ll finish it before my order gets here, but that may be assuming it takes the full predicted 4 days and not, like, 2.

Also I have all these other books I’m in the middle of, both EN and JP, I better not go into friggin standby mode now until Summer Cider gets here.

• 夜カフェ ch 4, which was 15 pages of text
• the last 5 pages of the intermission in 2.43, finishing 代表決定戦編①! I did manage to achieve my goal of finishing one of the non-manga volumes I’d already started before the next challenge after all! This also makes the first month that I’ve finished two JP novels, not even just when one of them wasn’t a book club book, but at all. Feels good, even if I did presumably start this one an entire year ago lmao (I finished part 2 of the 1st novel last March)

Finished パレード just in time for this challenge! The ending was…intense. I had predicted an element of it, but it still was intense, and it coloured the whole book differently. I need to gather my thoughts before I even attempt to rate it. Definitely interested in other books by the author.

• はちゅねミクの日常ろいぱら！pg 1 → 35 - Wanted something kinda standalone to read today that i could just pick up and put down whenever i want; so why not try out the 4koma miku manga? It’s kinda cute, and fun seeing portrayals of their personalities from so early on (manga from 2011).

2. transition into reading more stuff which is pure text - this one was a success! I took march off from reading any book books, but I still managed to read 3 in 3 months. There’s still room to grow here, but i’ll save that for the next challenge.
3. finish working through the 新完全マスター読解N3 - absolutely bombed this one; finished the first main section and haven’t spent much time on it since But towards the overall goal of taking N2 in december, I still think I’m doing fairly well.
4. Pass the ９級 kanken test - also dropped the ball on this one; I put my ds somewhere when i was reorganizing and haven’t had the willpower to try to find it
5. Read 100 books and 100 articles in 2023 - still on pace! In total i’ve marked 26 books as read and have 21 (mostly linguistics) journal articles in my annotated bibliography.

Hello to everyone! Long update from my side, I haven’t been doing well with keeping up with all things online, but at least, I’ve been trying to keep up the daily reading! Honestly, given the busy schedule and all, I’m pretty h*appy with how this challenged turned out I might have read more these three months than I did all of last year, so that’s a win, for sure! According to my time tracker it has been some 55-ish hours of reading, and wow that’s not bad! yay!!

Final day of the March Bonus Challenge already! This year is speeding past.
I’ve finished 13 volumes of Manga so far this year which feels like a strong start.
This month I managed to get my bookclub situation under control by reaching the end of Happiness and Orange - and while its exciting to complete both series, its a little bittersweet because I’ve really loved being in both of those clubs!

I missed 3 days during the official challenge but my reading during these last two weeks was sporadic. I only read 1 day this week. I finished the penultimate chapter of Skip Beat vol.1 and decided that I couldn’t read the rest before the next challenge so I just deferred the whole chapter to the spring reading challenge. It didn’t bother me that much because I’d stopped reading Japanese in the first place to concentrate on reading in English. I’d finally managed to collect the full Temeraire series so I decided to read it again. Besides it was quite a nice break. This year, I’d managed to pick manga with wordy dialogue and handwritten text so it was getting to be a bit of a strain. Now I should enter the spring challenge refreshed. (As long as I finish the last book in the Temeraire series.)

Well, when I checked tracking yesterday, my CDJapan order didn’t have even an expected delivery date, but today it’s saying the initial expected date was 4/3 (so, 3 or 4 days, depending on whether it counts Sunday) but it’s currently under an operational delay, whatever that is. So I guess I have a little more time to try and get a little further in the other stuff I’m reading before Summer Cider gets here.

I can’t believe Mima has at least some awareness that his and Hayate’s first meeting was a date.

Of course, ナンパ is typically used of a man picking up a woman (a woman picking up a man is 逆ナン) bc y’know heteronormativity; I don’t know if another word is used for gay pick-ups or if the queers just co-opted it. And, sure, Hayate did at first wonder if Mima had mistaken him for a woman, but Mima had not. He knew full well he was a man when he asked if he wanted to go into Hakoniwa with him. So if that ain’t what happened, then why describe it that way??

Sure, simple explanation, he’s a dumbass. But.
