I actually read something every single day. Sometimes entire tadoku level 0 or level 1 books, sometimes just a couple of sentences I could find online.

Some reading of non-fiction books in English

There definitely isn’t much of a point in going through the past two weeks. I haven’t done much reading. Last few days I picked up the grammar dictionary and today I’m fully caught up.

My focus has kinda shifted a bit since I’m just beginning a piano course so I’m getting more consistent with practicing that and with Japanese and Japanese reading I don’t have any pressure to do anything right now or for a specific date.

This is also the reason I won’t be posting in this thread during the off month as I usually do. Honestly I haven’t been reading much this challenge as a whole. Summer seems to not be the best reading time for me, last year I had a slump in July-August too, and only started to get more consistent as autumn came around.

I’ll be honest. Right now I’m not planing on joining the autumn challenge either. Unless I start spending more time reading or feel a strong desire to get more reading in, I don’t see myself joining because right now I just see my reading calendar and I feel discouraged I’m reading so little. Not pressure, just kinda sadness. And I don’t think that is helping.

So anyway, it’s been good following this thread as usual, and I might keep reading so a reply to someone might happen, but otherwise, keep having fun and I’ll see you around the forum.

last day! did another section of case 5 and there’s just the last one to go! should finish tomorrow but i also have a dentist appointment then so who knows my brain is struggling to keep all the threads straight tbh, there’s so much going on also minor gripe (major-ish spoiler) but like when ryouken turns up and then leaves after learning who his chess partner was, he only sends his dog at edgeworth and it’s not textually mentioned if he attacks anyone else (seems like not). what the actual hell were the other twelve people in that scene doing??? he’s one guy! ‘oops there he goes nothing we can do i guess’ yeah right

today’s nhk article was this one and i finished off the bit of granblue plot i started yesterday. watched some more y6 and i’m getting used to akiyama now. there’s a timeline somewhere where kiryu gets to be happy but it’s really not this one poor guy.

so in terms of attempting to finish 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ)２ by the end of the challenge i didn’t really succeed (was longer than i expected) but i did keep up with the ouran club and my plan to read an nhk article every weekday. i also kept up with the granblue fate episodes (even if it’s sort of made me hate the game now ).

Okay, so, plans for (the rest of) August:

This month went better than the other summer months, but is still nowhere close to how much I was reading before the summer. I read 720 pages, with an average of 23 pages per day. I missed one day, and finished 3 books.

A few Tobira entries

I can’t believe we’re already at the end. I didn’t have an initial goal, I was just mostly curious to see how my daily progress was. But I’m really glad I started the challenge and read as much as I have. During these last two months I’ve:

• Read about 60 pages of コンビニ人間, and also the first 60 pages of キノの旅!
• Read almost 150 pages of あん. I can’t believe I got so far, in what is the hardest book I’ve read up to now.
• Read ~ 3 different manga (volumes), and started many more (…which I hope to one day finish!)
• In terms of grammar, I almost went through 6 chapters of Tobira!

I’m still thinking of my goals for the future months, but it’s definitely going to include 1) Read at least a bit every day; 2) Focus on grammar. My goal for 2023 is also to finish reading my first 3 Japanese books (コンビニ人間, キノの旅, あん).

Tada! Last day of the normal challenge! I missed 0 days again, and have my reading streak up to 345 days. Really starting to closing in on one year of doing extensive reading every single day!

Hope everyone managed to get some good reading in, even if they didn’t quite meet all their goals. It’s easy to loose sight of how hard just reading at all is, especially if you’re really challenging yourself with those readings!

August Wrap-up:

One of my big updates this month is that I’ve started switching to using a spreadsheet to track my collective immersion studying between games, visual novels, manga, books, and watch time. I don’t really want to go back and get retroactive data for it, but I went back in the forums so I at least had full data for the month of august! The spreadsheet is still very much a work in progress, but I like how it’s been developing over the last few weeks.

I want to read at least the first volume of every series I own so that I can decide whether I want to read the whole series or not, and also decide whether I want to keep the series after I’m finished reading it or no

This is Operation Clean Out Javerend’s Bookshelf (OCJB), and I have been working fairly consistently on it, making some pretty nice headway. I kinda underestimated how much time I’d have to invest into some of the harder series I own I still have half of mushishi and nausicaa to finish, and then 4 more manga volumes (only two of which I own the full series for, so I guess really just those two are important for clearing bookshelf space). Reasonably, I think I can finish those in September. And have a mostly clean slate going into the fall challenge.

I also finished one of my long long long standing reading goals! When I first started reading, I selected a bunch of series to try to fill at least one significant reading at each natively level challenge, starting at level 17 with よつばと！and moving up to the low 30s. (the natively level+1 challenge). I finally connected everything from 17 to 31, although i think some things have moved a bit since I added them. It’s my list, and I make the rules

My only big misses for this challenge were pretty much dropping あん and コンビニ人間. For now, I seem to just enjoy reading manga a lot more than books. I couldn’t really make room for both challenging novel readings and challenging manga readings, and my easier days I was definitely reaching for manga. That may change over time, but for now it seems to hold true.

All of the dropped titles I started to read on bookwalker for free until they timed out, so I don’t have the volumes to finish right now! But I might come back to them in the future, but right now I have a big pile of unread manga on my bookshelf!

I have a lot of big changes coming up over the next few months so I expect the next challenge will have some holes in too, but reading most days is better than reading no days, right?

I’ll be continuing to read through September, so I’m just typing this post quickly to say that I read every day for the week and a half that I set out for myself! It’s cool seeing everyone else’s end-of-challenge results; I’ll have to read through them once I’ve finished dinner.

August 31st!

Today I read 2 pages of コンビニ人間, finishing this weeks IBC primer club assignment for the week. I had hoped to also read a chapter of Shadows House to stay on track with that bookclub too, but I had a bit of a long day today, so I decided to cut myself some slack and do some extra reading over the weekend instead of pushing too hard today.

I finished 6 volumes of of manga during this challenge, which is a bit lower than the amount I read in this year’s other challenges, but still feels like a good amount.
The reason for the reduction was that I decided to be ambitious and read コンビニ人間 with the IBC Primer club and that has sucked up most of the time that I usually use for non-bookclub reading.
It’s been tough for me, but I get so much satisfaction every time I realise that I’m reading a novel aimed at native speaking adults that its definitely been worth the struggle so far!

As always, massive thanks to @windupbird for hosting the challenge, and to everyone who has taken part. Thank you for sharing all the interesting things you are reading, and therefore ensuring that my to-read pile will eternally be growing faster than my reading speed does.

I almost forgot that today is the last day of the challenge. It was reading the new posts that reminded me. This was my worst challenge since I’ve started doing these challenges. I skipped 11 days and only read one full volume of manga. I’ve been reading 桜蘭高校ホスト部 (not along with the book club but at my own pace) but it’s slow reading for me. There is so, so, so much handwritten dialogue! I think after this volume, I will take a break from this series and pick something else to read as my shoujo manga next time.

Summary post

Hey guys~ How’s it going~ Long time no see~ I hope you are all doing better than I am

Where did I go (spoiler alert: nowhere good)

I’m sorry I went super MIA for this last half of August, I really legitimately was just having a terrible time emotionally and I had no will to do anything. I can’t remember the last time I felt this done with everything, I’ve just been a raging ball of negativity and irritation most of the time. Anyway, I’m gradually recovering from that but I really just was not feeling the whole reading thing so I’m just giving myself some space right now. I don’t think that forcing it would be helpful in this case. Reading is supposed to be something fun and enjoyable, but when you’re not in the mood to have fun at all and “having fun” feels like just another obligation…I don’t want to ruin my chances of enjoying something by forcing myself to do it when I’m literally just not capable of enjoying anything.

Anyway, I did read on the 12th and 13th, but I haven’t read since then and am fine with that. I finished 3 manga volumes this challenge, which is not great, but not nothing.

Thank you all for joining the challenge - I hope you had a good experience Congratulations to everyone who is finishing up today, and がんばって to everyone continuing on. As usual, feel free to keep posting updates here until the new challenge thread goes live in October. 終わりから3ページを読み返しました。
毎日読んだ人おめでとう🎉

Even though I started late, I learned a ton in just these few weeks. Thank you so much every one who helped out!

I’ll continue the ホリミヤ book club at whatever pace necessary, and I’ll certainly be continuing to work on D.N.Angel and more ホリミヤ once that is finished.

Idk if the page in Fukakai that my bookmark was in was actually page 16 or not, but I had to backtrack to the beginning of the flashbacks to understand what was going on. So I think I might have read more than 23 pages lol. But I don’t feel like counting pages just to verify. I’m on 40 now (chapter 2) and that’s what’s important.

Seasons said that September is the month of long rain 長月(ながつき) and to expect rain 9/1 was all about how typhoons often mess up harvests.

Small reads last 2 days.

I managed to read every day in august, but some were fairly nominal reads like the above. Missed 2 days in July.

I’ll keep posting during the off month, but I think it’ll be up and down and won’t push myself to read if I’m exhausted. I’m travelling from 11th, which will mean some days with great reads (long flights), and some where I reckon I’ll be too busy.

Summer Retrospective

Here we are, at the end. I haven’t done a lot of reading, mostly because I was unable to due to technical difficulties. I guess I could have read my physical copies, but somehow not being able to post about it kept me from doing that. Therefore I’m going to only do weekly summaries from the next challenges on.

I’ve read a lot of beginner content, and some intermediary content with look-ups via Yomichan. I definitely do not have a rich enough vocabulary yet to manage without look-ups, but my understanding of sentence structure is improving gradually. Sometimes I don’t even need to translate the sentence to get the meaning, which is a huge step forward for me.

Reading in the time between the challenges… I definitely want to do it, but I’m not sure I have the time. Last time I too kthe opportunity to focus on other projects and it went reasonably well. Can I do it again, but with additional time spend on reading? Hopefully.
