• 寄生獣２: 84% - 100%

I finished the second volume of 寄生獣 today! I tried finishing it yesterday since I was in the car for a few hours, but I’m not a fan of reading Japanese on my phone. So I only read a few pages yesterday (which is better than none).

Now to decide whether I should jump right into volume 3 or just focus on other books for now… either way I’m planning on reading more コンビニ人間 and ヨコハマ買い出し紀行 these next few days.

As for 積読 since I missed that conversation earlier

With series collapsed though I’m at 58. And then there’s 10 or so books that I haven’t requested to be put on Natively yet… It’s not as much as some of you, but I still want to get that down before buying anything else. Luckily I have all books already for clubs I’m in

57 pages of さいとう高校野球部, finishing ch 10 and starting ch 11, leaving off on pg 119. Reached the halfway mark!

Yuusaku presented a theoretical exchange as a script, complete with music and camera directions at the end lmao. Also, I started keeping a list of characters now that we’re meeting all the team, and I forgot Rin-chan’s given name so I could only put him down as Suzuki for now—and Yuusaku forgot it too! You’re not helpful, babe. He was helpful earlier when the captain announced the lineup for the red team and instead of quoting, he listed it and appended everyone’s nickname (I totally forgot Popo-chan’s real name was Tanaka Kazuyoshi [no one knows where the nickname’s from]). But then he completely checked out for the white team’s lineup!

Everything still always leads to onsens in this volume, but he’s a little better about keeping himself on task so the story actually has a chance to move forward (it’s funny, he’ll be talking about onsens and then stop himself bc they’re unrelated, and then like 5 minutes later he’s expounding on the health benefits of onsens)

Also, I finally managed to finish the first story of 乳と卵 - and oh boi, I dread starting the second one… The themes are very interesting, but the writing style fries my brain

more 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ)２today, did a couple of hours and didn’t quite finish the section but should do tomorrow. i had to look up some grammar for the first time today in a while (ようでは and に as a kind of ‘and’) but that’s not a bad thing! just a reminder i really need to go over some n1 stuff some time soon the dog??? please not the dog

did キャタピラ’s ability fate episodes today, so a continuation of yesterday’s. had a fun time with those, ヴィラ is such a yuri villain, love that for her. nhk article was this one on the crumbling giant kannon statues around japan. i only read about half of it but what i read was interesting. no y3 today.

Yesterday was an achievement in novel reading, it was the 50th day. Thankfully the reader I use has a shiny award for that so I can get my dopamine firing. Behold the hulk-medal:

I’m cruising through バガボンド, I’ll probably reach the “half-mark” of the 37 volumes in the manga. I started this around ~40 days ago. Compare to that ザ・ファブル which has 22 volumes finished in exactly 100 days. I’d like to believe my reading speed is getting better, but honestly バガボンド is just full of pretty art and long fight-scenes with little text. I’m also spending a lot more time reading which helps.

Started reading the “smoking manga” with the book club and restrained myself to read just 1 chapter. It was a much needed fresh air, compared to the archaic language in バガボンド this was way easier to read. I’ll probably pick up slice-of-life to read next just for that feeling.

I also had a coincidence which connected バガボンド to スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり:
In the 1st there’s a character named 佐々木; he was introduced in the 14th volume which I was reading a few days ago. The same day the character was introduced in バガボンド I also found the protagonist 's name in スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり is also 佐々木. Coincidence? I think not! (insert The Incredibles meme here)

Seems like the scolding worked because they kept walking in silence until the next stop. But apparently he’s pouting because he doesn’t want to make a comment when Celestina talks to him…

The vocab すごい is tough because it has such a diametrically opposite meaning. Somewhat similar to the duality of the British English “chuffed” maybe?

They meet another person (Gregor?), that seems to know something about the world outside, because he asks if the Carrotfestival in Didou is still held. But why that is important to him or why he knows about it he doesn’t want to say. These people are very private, and because this is a story I’m sure this is an important plotpoint.

It’s been a while since my last update since I had a lot going on.

Personal stuff

Almost a week ago now, my elderly pet rabbit took a sudden turn for the worse, and my partner and I made the decision to have him put to sleep. Since then I’ve been spending most of my free time doing light activities with my partner. Because of that, I haven’t been able to spend much time reading, but I’m okay with that.

I’m feeling okay now, and looking forward to getting back into reading more.

• Started on よつばと 13 and read chapter 83. A very nice and light chapter the help me get back into the swing of reading

the duality of the British English “chuffed”

i’m not sure what you mean by this? from personal experience i’ve only ever seen it used in a positive way, except maybe in sarcasm. something more like (the colloquial) ‘sick’ might be closer to what you mean i think?

The negative meaning does exist, I don’t know how much it’s used nowadays. I think this duality is something you often see in colloqualisms, though I’m not too up-to-date with current slang so I can’t make more than wild speculations here.

Anyway, the two different meanings are because it’s actually two different word origins! But I’m gonna stop there because I need to go to bed and can’t go down a research rabbithole right now.

Day 18! So far, I read close to 7,000 characters in 硝子の塔の殺人! I got better and/or the book got easier! Probably largely the latter if we’re being real haha, the setup seemed to be written in a more difficult way due to the description and necessary background (medical, detective fiction history, etc). I’m at 13.75%, not so bad. Probably going to read more later; I’m finding it pretty compelling. There’s a part of me starting to want to start up another Japanese videogame which’ll eat into this time somewhat, but we’ll see…

It also contains at least one picture! This just sorta took me by surprise as it had never happened since the intro. Locking mechanisms! Japanese mechanical descriptions are hard so I appreciate the diagram.

This book has such a prototypical unnecessarily belligerent 刑事, and I’m enjoying that a lot so far haha.

Three more pages of コンビニ人間 today. It’s a tough read for me, but I’m really enjoying it.
There are definitely some sentences that I don’t 100% understand, but so far I’m understanding whats going on pretty well so I’m not going to sweat the small stuff.

Seasons was about 合歓(ねむ)の木(き) which you might have seen before if you’re in Asia or the US. I remember them in my old neighborhood at least. So the reading of the kanji comes from how the leaves apparently fold up at night. And the kanji was chosen since the flowers represent a happy marriage.

JoJo felt a bit like cheating because so many pages were just オラオラオラ
