Finished the first chapter of ヤニ吸う and really enjoyed it (well, I had already read it in english before, but still). It’s actually a really good level for me, as I understand most of it but there are still a couple of words and expressions which are new. As for Ouran, I finished the extras and just have the character profiles to go, but I might just skip them tbh (everything is handwritten)… I’m on a good pacing with あん, but still a bit late with looking up words as usual. Today I’ll start this week’s コンビニ人間, and perhaps a bit more あん later on if I have time.

finished this week’s ouran reading and with that the whole volume! i sort of skimmed the character profiles where i got the gist, it was actually pretty helpful for getting used to the handwriting cos of all the repeated words. looking forward to vol 2!

briefly went back on 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ) 2 cos i was getting withdrawal, managed about an hour and a half which turned out to be entirely reading and zero gameplay apart from like, three dialogue choices. …have i mentioned this game is long it was a really well written section tho, both for humour and more emotional moments.

today’s nhk article was this one on the world expo and how not ready they are. also that mascot is possibly the worst mascot i’ve ever seen, why does it look like that??? terrifying.

today’s fate episode was キャタリナ’s (i.e. one of the non-canon ones) which unexpectedly featured the lowain bros! ah, i’d missed their antics. also watched a little more y3 and the nishikiyama family really continues to get worse huh. it’s a low bar, guys, c’mon

And that’s Volume 1 of Fate/strange Fake done!!! Despite the misery I kind of ended up putting myself through I’m glad I was able to keep to my schedule and finish it in eight days. I was gonna do two volumes at a time… but I don’t think that’s happening. Definitely need to read something that allows me to shift to a lower gear for a bit.

Despite how much I struggled, I think the fact that I managed to finish in a timely fashion is great evidence that once you manage to establish decent reading fundamentals even books that seem way outside your league are doable (though it does come down to a matter of stamina and willpower in the end…)

Tangentially related but it’s always so bizarre to me how they’ll spin serious stories about the Holy Grail War and they include these video-gamey stats that feel so out of place with the ‘reality’ of the story…

(The text says something like 'Enkidu’s stats aren’t fixed, they can redistribute them how they please but going from Rank A to A+ requires two ranks worth of points)

Word of the Day: 井蛙(せいあ) - frog in a well, or more figuratively, someone with a narrow perspective. Based on a Chinese fable about a frog living in the bottom of a well with no knowledge of the outside world. (This story was directly referenced by Yajirou’s character in Uchouten Kazoku, if you’ve seen/read that.)

Looking for other manga authored by 地主, I came across 死なぬ始末に幸来たらん, a web one-shot described as 「不死身の用務員にJKが本気の不幸を叩き落とす話 。」

I have absolutely no idea what that was! Strong middle-finger energy right from the title drop with a striking example of 「結構です」. If I was mining that would be the image I’d use for the card.

Read the first chapter of スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり. I think it’s the hardest thing I’ve read so far. Manageable, but it takes me some time to get through each sentence, to figure out who’s talking sometimes… It doesn’t have a lot of furigana, perfect for reading practice. And there were the words 初対面 and 偶然 which I learned recently on jpdb.io, but hadn’t seen yet in the wild, nice!

Day 17! I’m at a point where I need to take a break and do some stuff, so I’m cutting off 硝子の塔の殺人 at… well, 4000 characters again lol, but I’m gonna do more! Last night I read more and didn’t keep close track of it but might’ve gotten my daily total to around 8000, which is much better. Today’ll probably be similar; I’ve reached the point where things are heating up so the sentences are shorter and punchier, and reading has been easier in general. I’m also happy I don’t have nearly as many words mined as I want per day by this point, meaning I’ve hit fewer significant unknowns, as in past days I’ve been beyond that already more or less. Pretty good day of reading already, and it’ll continue later. Puts me currently at 9.71%, so we’re breaking past 1/10 today!

Did my dailies and got started on this week’s コンビニ人間, which I was hoping for. It’s really a pleasant read for me, as there are not as many unknown words as あん, so it flows a bit nicer. I might still read a bit of あん before bed if I’m not too tired. But first I wanted to play some どうぶつの森, which has been a while! (Does this count as reading practice?)

I was very excited but also a bit nervous getting when I got the confirmation that I am registered to the N3 in december this morning. I have quite a few grammar and test prep resources I want to invest time on, as I feel that grammar may be my weakest point. To start, I did a mock vocabulary 言語知識 (文字/語彙) test today. Tomorrow I will do listening (聴解), and hopefully on Friday the grammar/reading (文法/読解), which is the longest bit.

So back in volume 5, the author wrote in the afterword もはやタイトル詐欺のようになってきた気がする with how the plot was going south for our main characters, ending the book with them (and us readers!) in despair. Now in book 7, however, in the afterword and plenty of reviewers on bookmeter saying “finally タイトル回収!”

As for the book itself, it felt a bit random in the first half (a cooking class with a foreigner chef, new weird character, visiting the graveyard, sakura blossom garden party), but all was wrapped up nicely in the end. Also, the two main characters have changed so much since they first met one year ago in the story. Them being so madly in love with each other, I could read that all day, please gimme more They’re being so cute~ There were scenes ^[1], reunions, sense of achievement, some nerve-wracking and tense moments, wedding ceremony, and finally, much much awaited happiness.

Due to having afternoon plans with a friend and being completely and totally unwilling to walk to the mall in the daytime heat, I had a lot of reading time today - showed up to Starbucks at 7 in the morning and basically roamed around the mall just finding different places to sit and read (among other things) for a solid 6 hours

コンビニ人間 - read 4 pages ( →pg.36) - not quite finished the next reading section, but felt like a good stopping point.
龍ヶ嬢七々々の埋蔵金 - read 15 pages (→pg. 18) - this book has been HELL for my vocab (vocab list is up to 73 terms , but it’s highly entertaining so far! Main character is terrible in a hilarious way, and there have already been thinly-veiled references to Doraemon and One Piece, which I was not expecting but nearly made me snort out my coffee.

Just dazzle them with the fact it’s in Japanese; most people seem to find reading a different syllabary absolute witchcraft. Then you can get away with reading things no matter how 際どい . Surely. Maybe.
