While I’m here, I’ve just been meaning to say, it’s super cool seeing a lot of people who are earlier in their studies pushing out into manga and that sort of thing

Right back at you it’s super cool for me to see what it becomes possible to read when you’ve done it for many years. Very inspiring. Not sure that I would be pushing so hard, if I wouldn’t know that it’s possible to get where you guys are. So thanks everybody for the hard work!
And as predicted when I started this challenge, my backlog has been growing way faster than I’ve been reading so definitely need to keep pushing to have a chance to read all this in my lifetime!

I focused on books a bit more yesterday, but didn’t have much time to read in the end. I finished this week’s コンビニ, which went quite well - I feel like the story flows well and I can read at a good pace. あん was more challenging, and I could only read ~2 pages (1 and a half even) and even then I’m not sure I completely get what’s going on for now, so I might reread it if I still have time left this week. Tomorrow I’ll have a busy day, so I hope to advance on some reading today.

A slow day today - lack of an actual designated lunch break where I could read without it being against the rules combined with a dead boring day and a small case of sleep deprivation made for a lot less time and motivation to read. Still managed to get through week 3’s part of コンビニ人間, though, so that’s about 5 pages! Vocab is still kicking my butt, but I recognized 従って today when it popped up, when the last couple times I’ve seen it I’ve had to draw it into my dictionary app to figure it out, so that’s a sign that something is sticking, at least.

Seasons says that the end of the rainy season is upon us. I need this to hurry up and be true for this weekend. I got plans to sit in line for 2-3 hours and I’d prefer it to not rain. It also mentioned this color of the sky called 紺碧(こんぺき) which is supposed to be the color of the sky after the rainy season ends. The first image that came to mind was

this city pop album cover, which, yes, that sky color is clearly intentional with songs like

タクマとハナコ is the other manga my friend lent me. I only intended to read 1 chapter, which seems like it was a short chapter, but I was kind of surprised by how off-putting it was? Like here’s awkward female main and her outwardly normal friend. And here’s her awkward husband! Like the first chapter felt like the Big Bang Theory of Takarazuka otaku?? Anyhow, I gave it a try and am not continuing it.

Super is off to a great start and oh my stars, I found a hidden bunny!! hawt also help? the mains are all cute? my poor queer heart…

Ouran had just a short bit. It was mostly about Honey, which annoyed me more than I thought it would. My ex cosplayed (probably still does) Honey and the traits that they share are some of the things I liked the least about her. After that it was a bit of profiles of the characters. I read Haruhi’s before I stopped to think, I don’t even read the whole bios usually for JoJo, what am I doing? Like bios are fun, but I’d rather find out stuff more organically unless it’s something like the character’s favorite band or ideal partner.

JoJo was fun. If I end up having time before bed, I’ll read a bit more and then update the pages in the morning.

Am I avoiding Nausicaa by reading ahead for clubs? Mayhaps.

home post

today wasn’t a good reading day, mostly just poking around. did another two yakuza videos which i’m gonna start feeling less guilty about now cos it was maybe 50 minutes total and only about 10 of that was voiced (if that). i’m savouring the time kiryu has in okinawa cos i know it won’t last (he’s not that lucky). had a brief flip through a ds game i’ve got which is a collection of 100 older texts (lots of souseki and akutagawa and also the entire kojiki??? for some reason???) plus chapter summaries for all of them and author profiles. was surprisingly nice. said certain texts wouldn’t have furigana but all the ones i looked at did, so

today’s nhk (easy) article was this one on transgender people and bathrooms (good news, for once), and today’s fate episode was バクラ’s which was hard. i liked the story but it was full of archaisms and monk speech and combinations of the two. he used 候(そうろう) in place of ある or the ます ending, so ございます became 御座候(ござそうろう)

It’s a bit of an experience reading about super serious samurai plotting how to defeat each other to the upbeat grooves of citypop.

This read-every-day thing is actually hard. I felt like I was reading a lot these past days, but counting it now it was just 20 chapters. I’m also in the middle of trying to exercise every day and suddenly I realized, there’s so little time in a day.

For some reason I felt compelled to download aDoBJG after seeing people read it while reading proper novels also. Usually I read by trying to fill in the blanks by guess, but I’d probably benefit by revisiting basic grammar again. I’ll try to do a few pages each day. I will slog through this a few pages at a time, for a long time, because I haaate grammar with a burning passion

Got myself the 2 volumes of スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり for the upcoming book club but I got floored when I realized it’s just 2 volumes… And the club should be reading until September. The real challenge here is going to be to not read ahead.

Right?!?! I feel you. I’ve been reading a lot lately, almost a manga volume/day + a chapter ina light novel but the pile of “things to read” grows exponentially faster, I don’t know what else to do besides… read morreeeee!

Day 12! 硝子の塔の殺人 time! Besides my little excursion into short stories by Soseki, it’s been a while since I read a proper novel, moreso spending my time playing around in videogames and visual novels. Can tell that I’m moving a bit slowly, but hey, it’s the start of something new so isn’t that inevitable? I got a little intimidated when the tiny opening before chapter 1 gave me like 13 words to mine, but it chilled out when it got started properly, haha. That was a particularly descriptive bit and obviously that’s going to be my weakness right now with all the reading in media that focuses on dialog and thoughts a little more.

@pocketcat really wasn’t lying about all the mystery references, it dumps lists of author after author on you near the start, haha. Could at least recognize most of the English names but when they got to the Japanese authors I was kinda just phonetically reading name furigana and nodding along. I have a lot to learn about, haha. The ミステリーオタク type absolutely swooning around an author in the beginning here feels like I’m just reading about pocketcat

With the new browser reading tool I’m using, looks like character counts are back on the menu! No clue about pages, but I read about 5000 characters, which doesn’t even quite put me at 2% progress. On the low end for me compared to my VNs for sure, but it’s more consistently difficult so it is what it is. Might read more later, I’m digging the beginning.

Overall I’m super happy with how the reading went. Obviously there’s a big chunk of words I don’t know, but that feels like the only real impediment. I’ve come across almost no sentences that weren’t quickly intuitive to me, no tricky grammar or anything. This book is on jpdb so I can see the average sentence length is 23.6, lower than 告白 but a noticeable step up from most VNs I’ve read so far. Some sentences sprawl a bit but it’s never really too difficult to track what they’re saying. I’ve really come a long way. Somewhere in my history you can dig into the posts in the absolute beginner club like “hey this 6 character panel is absolute gibberish how do you read” so… it really does get better, hang in there if anyone’s feeling that right now.

Mystery manga samples : 4 of them

Remember last challenge (or was it the one before that?), when I asked about mystery manga recommendations? I went through and saved some as want to read on Bookmeter back then, and I put 4 of them to the side to read the samples of later.

Well… finally, I got around to reading them. I read 2/4 samples completely, one of them because it was so short. In fact so short that I couldn’t figure out if I’d like to read or not, so guess what? The other one I read wholly, I just didn’t vibe with. It didn’t make my want to read list.

Another one I gave up on pretty quick, realizing it didn’t seem to be for me. The first one I read, I only read about half the sample before realizing that yes, I’d happily read that. No need to read the whole sample. ^^

Still kinda in a pattern of reading every other day right now. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll pick up Ouran and actually get caught up as I’m almost there… Also should read English again… Merp…

I guess I was avoiding those things so much I finally took care of those samples.

Finally as promised today was a book club day!

• 桜蘭高校ホスト部 pg 67 → 106 (end of ch2) - I was 4 weeks behind, and now I am less! Some parts my understanding was a little spotty on, so I went to read this chapter in english. It turns out it wasn’t just the japanese lol. Some of the cuts between different events are just genuinely pretty jarring and hard to follow

I fell off this challenge entirely with the chaos that has been my schedule as late, but I guess I’ll pop in again and try to keep up with people’s posts once more

I’m currently reading 予言の島 with the spooky book club, コップクラフト with the LN book club on Natively, idly working through the last story of 嫌いなら呼ぶなよ (I’m just not that into it?) and picked up ハサミ男 recently and love it so far.

I’m waiting til I’m a bit farther in, but I feel like ハサミ男 might be a good nomination for the Profoundly Weird book club. The main character certainly seems to not fully understand social interactions and they’re hallucinating a ‘doctor’ that scolds them each time they attempt, and fail, to commit suicide. I’m just past 10% in though and I’ll probably wait til I’m closer to a quarter or even half in before calling it and nominating (if it goes that way).
