Okay this is getting quite interesting . The plot thickens.

9-nine- tomorrow and next day so unsure if I’ll read more of this these days, but it’s likely since it’s pretty much last week of 9-nine- episode 3 and it might end up being (much?) shorter than usual. We’ll see.

Today I read the first chapter of Shadows House volume 9.
I’m really glad that I managed to stick it out when I was struggling with volume 6, because I’m enjoying it more and more as I get deeper into the story.

Finished High Wizardry, and in just one day! Now that’s more like it lol. I didn’t remember this one at all either. It’s like I only read the first in HS, which makes no sense, because it’s an omnibus, although it could explain why I’d remembered a certain event at the end of the first as being at the end of the book. Also, I don’t think I picked up on it in HS, but reading it now it’s actually pretty obvious that Carl and Tom are together. You can tell in book 1, but the 3rd has more direct evidence, with a line one of them says to Neeta that’s ostensibly about wizardry but works very well for queerness (like, it’s not even subtle, talking about how living in secrecy and living openly both present their own difficulties), and the bit on wizards in a permanent partnership which then immediately directly compares the two of them with Neeta and Kit, who are love interests and explicitly acknowledged as such here.

Also going through Natively and adding your entire Bookmeter catalog when you have over 200 read books and nearly as many unread is… oogh… It’s gonna take me a few days, I think. Also I feel bad about skipping ratings, but almost all of the pairs it’s presented me with thus far I could not make an accurate assessment of.

• SPY×FAMILY mission 45. I’ve heard the cruise arc is really good, though I don’t think I know anything about it, so I’m looking forward to this volume.

Yeah, it was much milder than what I was expecting. It wasn’t bad, but I enjoyed it a lot less than I thought I would. I think when I adjusted my expectations to the style of the book I got more out of it, but yes, I won’t be seeking out other books by this author in a hurry. Although I hear her earlier books pack more of a punch.

I read much less again today than I wanted to but only because I did an extremely long session reviewing grammar and vocabulary today in preparation for joining the BBC come Saturday. My brain was absolutely fried from that, so I just worked through some easier manga I found on Pixiv and read a page of The Tile World Chronicles: Aryn’s Rescue.

Forgot about yesterday, but had a slow day anyway. Just some pages ふらいんぐうぃっち。 cute as always, of course. Today I read some more pages of また、同じ夢を見ていた。 but also didn’t make as much progress as I wanted. I felt a little under the weather anyway, maybe I will do more tomorrow. It inspires me to read how much progress some people here make, so I hope I can achieve more tomorrow

I found a word in my reading last night that I thought would be perfect for @omk3 's onomatopoeia thread …until I checked the dictionary :

So today I read an Aozora short story called 穴. The title is no coincidence, I found it when looking for 穴-related books on Amazon, and the totally misleading reviews were talking about a book that everyone must read, that will change you, that is full of twists, and I don’t know what else. Obviously these reviews were for a totally different book, there’s no other explanation. I looked up the author, 蘭郁二郎, and Wikipedia says he was a mystery and science fiction writer, so I thought I’d give it a try.

The story was 8 pages long and written in 1938. It wasn’t full of twists nor did it change my life, and it wasn’t actually a mystery or science fiction but a ghost story. Some railway workers get a phone call about a body on the railway lines and go to investigate. There are gruesome details about deaths by train, but it’s otherwise a very straightforward ghost story. The titular 穴 only makes a tiny appearance at the end, disappointingly. The language is very approachable for a book that old, I thought. And the youtube 朗読 was nice too.

did a whole section of 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ)２! took me like 3 and a half hours but i did it! having a lot of fun with it, i already love all the new characters that’ve been introduced, they all bounce off each other in fun and interesting ways, and i can’t wait for all the reveals (shigaraki what are you hiding ). shoutout to edgeworth having a staring contest with a dog.

related side note but i would put it as harder than the first game. the grammar is consistently higher level (かねる turned up today), and some of the characters have speech patterns that take longer to parse (most of the new ones, actually) and, for me anyway, are full of words and phrases i don’t know. it’s not much harder, but it’s noticeable.

today’s fate episode was エリン’s which i enjoyed while reading it but was also utterly unmemorable so idk. today’s nhk article was this one on the continuing my number card saga (i swear every time i go to check the news smth else has happened ). was actually easier to follow than i was expecting, so that’s nice.

also did another y3 video, which started off with a news report which sucked but after that it was much easier. was mostly kiryu talking with the kids and doing the yakuza national sport (aka golf).

逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ)２：しりぬぐい (clearing up after someone else’s mistakes. the literal meaning too ), ムキになる (to get worked up (over something trivial)) and 基礎代謝 (basal metabolism) which i can guarantee i’ll never see again.

Fate/strange Fake continues to be a slow, plodding read plagued by the uninhibited writing style of an author high on his own fumes (I mean this in the most endearing way), remaining equal parts agonizing and yet surprisingly fun to read. I’m kind of surprised I managed to meet the quota I set for myself and it looks like I’ll be able to finish this volume relatively quickly (though I’m dreading when they inevitably start getting much longer). In general I also enjoy learning random and seemingly-useless words so it actually feels vindicating whenever I come across one of them in this novel…

About the novel itself: I don’t know why it is… but the Gilgamesh in f/sf is just kind of… too over-the-top? I don’t know if it’s Narita’s specific interpretation of him, or maybe it’s the lack of voices, or maybe my tastes have just changed, but I always envisioned GIl as a bit goofy but still very charismatic in his arrogance- this instance of Gil, however, feels practically like a cartoon villain with how conceited he is.

As a palate cleanser I’ve also been reading くちべた食堂(しょくどう), a fun short little manga a socially awkward eatery cook and her socially awkward regular customer. It’s very easy, has very short chapters, and is above all very cute-- highly recommend giving it a go.

Word of the Day: 乱杭歯(らんぐいば) - uneven teeth. “Disorder(ly) Picket Teeth” serves as a very visceral (and kinda gross way) of describing a crooked smile…

Caught up and read all the grammar for this week. ~なくて was escpecially weird because Bunpro had two grammar points for it that seemed to me the same, so I was left scratching my head there. Maybe I just need more sleep.

Lots of grammar I was unfammiliar with and I don’t think I encountered it while reading yet. Evidently that means that I need to read more.

Falling behind a bit on this week’s book club readings, but I chose to take care of all of the tasks I had to complete before going on maternity leave. Two of my favorite classes are canceled today due to the end of term tests, so I really hope to get the readings caught up today because Saturday and Sunday are surprisingly fully booked with guests!

Day 13! Read a little over 4000 characters again in 硝子の塔の殺人, which just puts me at 3.43%. I’m not at all happy with this speed given that I’m gonna hit VN club days and only really spend a few days per week on the book in all likelihood (unless I slip a bit in later at night after, but I tend to do lighter reads then). Hopefully I’m on my way to speeding up after a little more time with it. Dunno though. The reading isn’t so bad, other than some descriptive stuff again describing the tower that really showed how that stuff is my weakness. Book seems cool but at this pace, I need a little more time with it. I should also maybe zoom and make the font larger cause the current size is comfortable enough, but there’s, like, intimidation by being faced with something like 1,500 characters on one page haha.

I’m starting the final chapter in Ghost Trick also! I wrote a short thing about how good I think the game is in my study log because someone had asked me soon after I started it. Here I just wanted to take a minute to advocate for it as a piece of Japanese reading practice. If anyone is just getting into games or just wants something they can chill with, the text boxes are small and it even has a tendency to write out words in kana (not ones you’re likely to get confused on, I promise, haha) over using some kanji pretty often. Sometimes characters even repeat a kanji word back in kana when asking about it. Almost everything can be advanced at your own pace. No voice acting, but very good reading practice with its key words repeated a whole bunch. It’s dialog-heavy so there’s a lot to read and you’ll want to be understanding it, but I think it could make a really good early step for anyone looking for ideas.
