Forgot to bring my grammar dictionary with me so no grammar reading points today lol

Read:

• 東方茨歌仙 ch 1 - This is listed at level 30 (??) on natively, and i think mostly because of unusual vocab. Mid length chapters, ~30 pages. There’s a lot of shrine and religious specific words, some of the characters talk a lil wonky, some normally kana words written w kanji (but it still has furigana thankfully). Pretty look-up heavy, but many words repeated a lot. A bit of a struggle, but it might feel a little easier reading at my computer instead of using my laptop to look stuff up. Probably on par or a lil harder than ouran, maybe close to the first ch of mushishi i read but a bit less effort bc of the furigana.
• 小林さんちのマイドラゴン ch 1 - level 28 on natively, no furigana, short chapters ~15 pages. Much smoother read, just a bit slower occasionally to look up kanji. But infinitely easier to read than when I tried the first chapter sometime last year. Only really difficult part was when fafnir was talking, but i think he’s speaking intentionally archaically

Kobayashi I could probably read now and enjoy, touhou I might hold off until I can dedicate some more time to learning that vocab.

I’m already writing an analysis of places as character in JoJo’s Part 4, but now I’m seriously tempted to write up an analysis of horror in this Part and why it’s not slice of life like many Western fans ascribe.

Did I mention that I was gonna try to finish all 3 of my new Shy Bunko books this Pride Month? I am. The other two have different authors, so they may not take me only 4-6 days like the Chishima Chidori ones, but hopefully they won’t give me too much trouble.

(I read—and write—queer stories all year ‘round, so just reading queer stories wouldn’t be any different from the rest of the year, and so I set the goal of reading three novels in their entirety this month, something I have never done before in Japanese. Sure, I finished three last month, but two of those I was already most of the way through.)

I think after I finish all three, I’ll switch focus to Stage of the Ground rather than start another new novel. I doubt I’ll have it any easier on the baseball terms front despite watching most of oofuri since starting it, but I feel like reading in general has gotten easier (and it’s not like it’s, like, Tatami Galaxy levels of difficult, anyway).

• mini comic included with the 元ヤンパパとヒツジ先生 drama CD
• 21 pages of シャーク、シャーク、シャーク！ reading ch 1 and leaving off on pg 31. The first one of these had tea-specific vocab, the second one academic- and archaeology-related, and this one construction-related. I wonder what the fourth will have. Even with the construction-related vocab though, this one’s not giving me too much trouble. The Kansaiben isn’t really either, even though I’m not much more than vaguely familiar with it. I feel like the overlap with Fukuiben is helping me out some (I feel like it would usually be the other way around though lol)
  I didn’t start it until fairly late today because my brain wouldn’t focus on reading until around dinner, or I woulda read more.

ツナギ [n.] coveralls; overalls. Short for ツナギ服.
大男 (おおおとこ) [n.] big man; large man; tall man; giant. What an atrocious reading. (It’s not as awful as “great-grandfather,” though. おおおおじ. Evil. It must be very uncommon though because my phone’s IME wouldn’t even give me the right kanji unless I typed おおそふ. I’m very glad そうそふ and ひいじいさん also exist.)

Almost done with week 1 of Saikawa and Moe volume 6!

I noticed a fun detail regarding vision. Protag said they have 視力二・〇, which I’m 95% sure refers to Snellen visual acuity with a score of 2,0. The commonly known 20/20-vision equals to 1,0 in Snellen VA, so 2,0 is the same as 20/10-vision, which is absolutely incredible.

Wellp my recent bad luck with English novels has continued. That library book ended up getting stupid by the end of the first novel, and I don’t feel like reading the other two, so I’m done with it.

74 pages of シャーク、シャーク、シャーク！ reading ch 2-5 and leaving off on pg 110. lol Akiyama’s totally attracted to Samejima but just thinks it’s envy at this point (Samejima’s tall and built and has a more “manly” physique, while he himself is more average). Some of the stuff he does or thinks, though, I can’t tell how much is because he’s interested in Samejima and how much is simply because he’s an idiot.

I feel robbed. Akiyama has at least one earring, but he’s not drawn with any :(

It’s kinda funny though. Nearly all the euphemisms have just been along the lines of “there” or “that place” or “his thing.” I see I didn’t need to worry lmao. The only other one, which was thankfully used outside of sexytimes, was 急所, which in its normal usage refers to a vital point in the game of go. (Even if it’s funny now though, I hope they aren’t used the whole time…)

Haha, this is one that I see/hear all the time in pro wrestling! Here’s the context sentence I originally saw it in, which is on my Anki card for it: “15分過ぎ、レフェリーが昏倒している隙に、佐々木が急所にヒザをたたき込み、イス攻撃。” In English, we also typically use a euphemism to talk about this in a pro wrestling context. Wrestling commentators would call this a “low blow”, haha.

I’m already writing an analysis of places as character in JoJo’s Part 4, but now I’m seriously tempted to write up an analysis of horror in this Part and why it’s not slice of life like many Western fans ascribe.

It’s clearly horror based. The framing of the panels, tempo and shock.

But there’s also that element of mystery you find in detectives/thrillers throughout the part.

I haven’t been posting in a bit because of health problems (wow that sounds familiar) but I’ve been reading every day! Making good progress through Paranormasight; I think I might just manage it. What made me feel compelled to make sure I posted today was just how mean this section was. Domains of vocabulary are very real. On the plus side, I’ve seen 天変地異 probably over 100 times recently because it is THE central sort of catalyst in Tears of the Kingdom, so I was pleasantly surprised to come across that again somewhere else. Words like 天文密奏, “confidential report to the ruler of the country of astronomical events and their astrological interpretation” are, umm, first timers though.
