And the last day of the challenge arrived and I almost forgot it!
I’m really happy I decide to join, even thou I didn’t write anything here like most of you guys, I can assure you all I read every single day for more than 1 hour in most of them. I completed 5 light novels in Japanese (today I’m on my way to try and finish the 6th volume), which alone is way more than I did 8 years ago, when I started to learn Japanese. If anyone is willing to start a Summer version, I’ll also join just to keep the momentum. Thank you guys for the motivation!

went with 弟(おとうと)の夫(おっと) to round off the challenge, managed up to the end of chap 3 in the time i had. i really like it, it’s got great art (kana is adorable) and i’ve got hope it’ll handle its themes of homophobia and cultural difference well. the little queer history lessons at the end of chapters are also good. it’s deceptive tho, i thought it would be fairly easy based on the first chapter and then it just gets harder as you go on

words that stood out: 合法(ごうほう) (legal, lawful, legitimate), 不動産屋(ふどうさんや) (realtor, real estate agent), 自意識過剰(じいしきかじょう) (excessive self-consciousness).

and with that the challenge is over! i absolutely cleared the goals i set myself, of completing my first novel kiki’s delivery service, starting my first game 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ) (which i finished!!) and joining the ouran club. beyond that, i’ve read some great manga both that i was looking forward to and that were complete surprises. i can tell i’ve massively improved since even just last time, and it’s been fun following everyone else’s reading journeys. looking forward to taking part in the next one in summer, when the JLPT will be over and i can tackle 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ) 2!

Tileworld Chronicles - Markus’ Ascent Chapter 4, p. 1 - 4
Last day of the challenge, and I decide to start a new chapter. I’ll want to re-read it once more, anyway, because there were a lot of kanji I didn’t know and I want to have a more detailed understanding of the story here.

On page 2 there are two を after each other, I’m gonna assume it’s a typo.

The person we met last time introduces themselves: they’re Sanaa. They and their people live underground because the sun burns them. Apparently there was a battle their ancestors were part of, and afterwards this magical affliction took hold. Anyway, there was a floating bridge in the void, which was very confusing to me. You’re telling me this mountain is hollow?

To be continued in the summer. I’ve been a bit lax with my discipline and have not read every day for this challenge. And by discipline I mean health, because chronic issues are chronic and need constant vigilance lest they make you regret not going to bed at a more proper time.

Nevertheless, I will once again join the coming challenge, though I will take a break this coming month. I want to focus on my art/writing, which I have struggled to find time for during challenge times.

Since you’re asking I’ll give you an answer : yes indeed it is hollow!
The main reason being I was very tired of the low contrast underground tiles I used in the previous chapter. I could not imagine myself using them again.

And hollow mountains are definitely a thing!

Yeah, I’ve actually been playing it along with the visual novel bookclub here on the forum. I think difficulty-wise from the games I’ve played I’d consider it kind of medium? The hardest part is the vocabulary I think, there’s a lot of crime/legal/medical vocabulary. Although I also played it in english first and I’ve found it a lot easier to figure out words that I don’t know based on context from what I already know so it might be easier than starting a game from scratch. Hi everyone! I’m still here, just haven’t been updating because, well, I didn’t have all that much to say.

Somehow, May is already over

Here’s how it went for me, reading-wise: I missed 6 days, and only read 2 books, but I finished (and really enjoyed) both. Total pages this month: 811, with an average of about 26 pages per day.

I realized (not that I didn’t know it already) that I don’t need a challenge to read every day - reading is my favourite pastime anyway. However, there are some days that are just too busy, and I had to seriously tell myself that there’s no point in reading just for the sake of ticking a box. That’s not what I’m reading for. So I made myself not read on days when it would have been a chore rather than enjoyment, hence the 6 missed days. I will continue reading (almost) every day, and I will sporadically post in this thread when I think I have something interesting to say, but I don’t think I will be updating every day or worrying about missing reading days from now on.

Reading Every Day Challenge Q2 2023 - Wrapping up

Picking out vocabularies continues, only that now I quiz on vocabularies from JP on the front.

At some point, I became tired of reading chores, ngl. So do the first priority. Also I’ve got some reading from listening materials too.

• 神様のカルテ (56%). There is audiobook.jp too, but I don’t like it.
• A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar (Currently at K) (There is a club running.)
• Death Note Vol.7-8 up to Ch.64 (Only as fast and far as the club I am holding.)
• 暁のヨナ Vol.1-2, and just start of Vol.3 (Ch.12). (During trial period.)
• 四月は君の嘘 Vol.1-4, and first half of Vol.5
• 古見さんは、コミュ症です。 Vol.1 (There was a club running.)
• うらら迷路帖 Vol.1-7 (Completed series)

We did it!

Another challenge in the books! Thanks for reading and posting everyone; it really is fun to read all your updates. It both motivates me and gives me (usually good) ideas to steal

This challenge has felt kinda sparse for me compared to previous ones. I only really had one main goal going into the challenge, which was to read all of your lie in april during april, and then everything else has just been icing on top.

I missed no days of reading, doing at least some solid chunk every day, and read:

• 11 volumes of 四月は君の噓 + 1 chapter of the light novel
• 1.5 volumes of アオハライド
• 1.5 volumes of はちゅねミクの日常
• finished the volume of 古見さんはコミュ症です with the book club
• started アオのハコ, ロジカとラッカセイ, and 桜蘭 with the book clubs
• 60 pages of 新完全マスターN3 Reading, which, honestly, is a lot. Test practice is so draining to me, even in English. I can sit down and read a novel cover to cover for fun, but give me 1 single section to read and frame it like a test and i’ll be done lol
• read 230 pages of a grammar dictionary lmao (also a club)
• finished Making Sense of Japanese by Jay Rubin
• maybe a few random chapters of other stuff, I know a few nagatoro, one mushishi, some other test reading stuff like nausicaa

Honestly? It all adds up. Plus I like, moved, started a new (old) job, took several trips, and just in general was super busy packing/unpacking/meeting with people and all that. There were a lot of opportunities for me to just not read and do something else, but I’m pleased that it has become both enjoyable enough and enough of a habit that I don’t really have to worry about not doing it.

Similar to what a few other people have mentioned, there’s stuff that when I want to read it for fun, I will just read it in japanese rather than seek out an english translation. It feels less like a chore and more like something that I actually want to do , which is a super good feeling! (ok except the 新完全マスター, that absolutely still feels like a chore )

For June, I’d like to kinda clean up a lot of loose threads. Finally put a nail in this reading practice book, finish up はちゅねミク, and stay on top of book clubs. But for those taking a month off, I’ll see you in July for the summer challenge!

• played 魔女の泉3 Re:Fine for 30 min (it’s a cute little rpg about a witch living in a forest, creating magical puppets to fight alongside her, and doing push-ups for training ^^)

• and suddenly played Persona 5 Royal for an hour+ (just wanted to check whether it’d run smoothly on switch emulator…yeah. To my surprise I understood quite a lot and didn’t have to look up much - maybe I expected it to be more difficult or also maybe my brain fills in the gaps easily since I know the story from the previous walkthrough)

And as for the challenge results..it might seem pretty uneventful in my case since I haven’t actually finished anything but the fact that I read almost every day (usually 6 days a week) for 15-60min for 6 weeks is a huge step for me so I’m really glad I joined the challenge! I’ll keep playing Lost sphear and hopefully finish it during the Summer challenge

I feel like the quality of this volume is worse than of the first volume. Sometimes I can only guess the furigana. but most of the time I guess correctly, so it’s not that bad.

End of the challenge
I only missed 4 days in May (none in April). But I did Duolingo on those days…so technically I did read at least a few sentences I think that is a good result for my first ever japanese reading challenge.
I will continue tracking my readings here in June, but I won’t see it as a challenge (as in I won’t force me to read if I don’t want to - which was not that often, but it was the case on some days).

I just had a super busy weekend, loads of yard work, as I mentioned in my previous post, and somehow it is already Wednesday. I think the only reason I made myself get out of my little dry spell was because today was the last day of the challenge.

I had meant to make this challenge the time I got more consistent, but I seem to maybe have been more inconsistent then I was for the first quarter this year.

Maybe I can use this off month to get regular again, and then smash the summer challenge? I can hope!

So far during this spring challenge I’ve finished 3 manga volumes and 1 VN. The VN I’d been working on a while as mentioned earlier in the thread. So for my yearly goals, I’m close-ish to half done. I should preferably finish a novel or an VN by the end of June, but that is not happening.

For now, I’m happy to be down to only have Ouran as my club reads (except for the grammar dictionary, but it feels different from the others so it is pretty chill), and after I get current with that maybe I’ll have time to squeeze in some side reads before the IBC primer starts in mid June.

I can dream anyway. xD

As usual the end of the challenge has managed to sneak up on me!
I completed another 7 volumes of manga during this challenge, for a total of 20 volumes so far this year.

I also said goodbye to another of my long term bookclubs, as we finished the final volume of Mitsuboshi Colors after about 18 months or so of reading together.
While I’ve been sad to see the end of a few of my offshoot bookclubs so far this year, I’m also pleased that having more free reading time has allowed me to start reading a novel - this will be the 3rd novel I’ve read, and my first attempt at reading one without the support of a club. So far its been slow going, but I’m enjoying it a lot.

Finished off the Spring Challenge by finishing this volume of the tanuki - I can’t believe this challenge is over already! I learned a relevant word re: what I was just complaining about a couple days ago: 断捨離 (decluttering; clearing out past accumulation; minimalism) And, of course, I have one last cute tanuki picture xD

Overall, this felt like a pretty good challenge season for me. I missed kind of a lot of days compared to usual (I read 45/61 days), but I did finish a book book (Penguin Highway) along with 5 volumes of manga! I’m not mad at that lol.

Well, today is the end of the official challenge. I missed 7 days in total over the two months. The first break was because of Holy Week. I just didn’t have time after Mass. Since that broke my streak, I ended up relaxing and just gave myself licence to miss a few more days here and there (especially when I was engrossed in an English series and didn’t want to stop). I’ve continued the trend of choosing wordy manga which means that the number of pages I could read in one sitting decreased. So I’ve only read one entire volume of manga for this challenge- Fairy Tail 2.

In May, I read 31/31 days and read (finished) 11 volumes of manga and 3 novels—one of those novels even read entirely within this month! According to Bookmeter, I read an average of 63 pages/day. Not quite as much as last month, but I did more novel-reading this month, so it might balance out a bit.

I’d had vague designs on finishing Stepfather Step before the month was up too, but when I still had about half of it left at the beginning of this week, I knew that wasn’t happening. I’ll likely finish it by the end of the week, though, since I only have the one chapter left—possibly even tomorrow, though I ain’t getting my hopes up since I’ve got work.

As usual, I’ll be continuing through the off month, so y’all continuing as well, I’ll see y’all tomorrow, and those not, until July!

Like always, I plan to continue the challenge through the break time. Hopefully next season though I can read every day without breaking my streak.

Seasons was about changing from winter to summer clothing around this time of year and how the tradition came from China during the Heian period but only became popular during the Edo period.

JoJo I mostly read during the day. It was interesting to see horror meets comedy of errors in this arc. I also started the Red Hot Chili Peppers arc.

I planned to read more Dracula and even read the whole of May 7th (or whatever day I’m on) for it, but I was able to talk with my parents yesterday and they told me about a planned family gathering. It might be possible for me to go, but Idk if it’ll be worth it as compared to another year. It’s weighing so much on my mind though that it took me 30 min to read two fairly easy pages of seasons
