Work was hard today, stayed super late. Came home and took a nice bath with some english reading, really didn’t have the heart or mental energy to do much in the way of japanese today. But! I have the next three days off, so I’d like to catch up on book clubs and do some more studying than I have been. This month has been a lot of grammar study and kind of more intensive reading with the test practice stuff, so my page count has dropped quite a bit. Not quite sure what I want to do for the off-month of the challenge yet, but I think my summer challenge is going to have some pretty ambitious extensive reading goals.

Been away from my computer for a bit, then got busy with finals so quite behind on updates, but I have been keeping up with my reading. I’ve managed to read everyday but some days I was too tired or low motivation so I just made myself read a page or two to keep my streak. I can’t believe it’s almost the end of the challenge already! I’ll probably stick around here through June since I should have a lot of free time to read now that school is finished for the semester.

Read: Bustafellows
Put in an order for Bustafellows 2 which released a few days ago and I want to finish as much of my replay of the first as I can before it’s delivered, so the past few days I’ve been focusing on catching up with the game club. I already had the common route done so now I’m working my way through the individual routes, I’m currently at 2/5 done.

finished vol 2 of 光(ひかる)が死(し)んだ夏(なつ) which i think i enjoyed less than vol 1 but some of it was set-up for later things, plus i was really struggling with the kansai-ben this time for some reason… and it ended on a cliffhanger!!! ahhhh!!! this is why i don’t read things that are ongoing, it just hurts

Read: Bustafellows
Put in an order for Bustafellows 2 which released a few days ago and I want to finish as much of my replay of the first as I can before it’s delivered, so the past few days I’ve been focusing on catching up with the game club. I already had the common route done so now I’m working my way through the individual routes, I’m currently at 2/5 done.

Oh! I played the first Bustafellows in english a couple years ago! I didn’t realize there was going to be a sequel. Are you playing the first one in Japanese? If you are, how difficult do you consider it to be? I’ve read a lot of manga and a couple light novels, but I don’t know if I’d be ready for a visual novel yet, especially one I can’t text hook…

I think I’m going to start reading すずめの戸締まり in earnest on the 1st. I’ve been front loading some vocab with jpdb.io. Though I’m also thinking of reading コンビニ人間 along with the book club… That looks harder since it’s a proper adult novel but it’s much shorter so maybe I’ll be okay. Worst case, I’ll just be super slow with すずめの戸締まり I think.

• まさぐる = to grope in a pocket. Like 探(さぐ)る, but more in-the-middle?
• 取(と)り敢(あ)えず = for the time being. Written in Full Kanji in context. Would be easily noticed if in all Kana.
• 一路(いちろ) = straightly; directly
• 欲(よく)を言(い)えば = if ideally
• 手(て)ずから = personally. Perhaps like 自(みずか)ら, but not 身(み).
• お手上(てあ)げ = being in a hopeless situation
• 威風堂々(いふうどうどう) = majestic; pompous

最後の日来た！

Alright from here I am gonna just write in Enlgish. So overall I did 2 of the 3 goals I set for this challenge. I am happy I dropped Tatami Galaxy as I think if I pushed myself to finish I would have probably given up sooner.

After running through all of my cellular data, I was forced to take a pause on the last week or so of the challenge on Persona 5 the Royal which I had played for almost the whole challenge (maybe 2 weeks in?). Something I learned about this challenge is that I really don’t need to do these challenges to get myself to read anymore. I am pretty aggressive about reading in Japanese now (thanks to doing these challenges), but I think I am gonna stop after this one as I wasn’t really fond of doing updates as the the time went by because it was like “duhhh of course I read today.” I did the same with the listening challenge back in the Winter challenge because listening in Japanese is just super normal for me now (not great at it, but my practice comes with just existing). Reading has become the same way.

I think what I will probably participate in the writing/speaking challenge next, but I am unsure as of right now. The reading challenge was a really big part of starting my reading boom last year and a year of doing this really pushed me to read things that were outside of my comfort zone. So it was cool that I could spend 90 hours in a JRPG that I had wanted to play for years and could finally do so in Japanese.

Anyways, that’s all, and I won’t be posting in this thread from today. Thank you all for the support, and hope you all continue to push yourselves to read every day even as the challenge ends!

Seasons was about the wheat harvest, which I was surprised by. I guess maybe it’s because wheat can sometimes be harvested multiple times like it is in Stardew Valley??

Dracula I decided to just finish the day and not start a new day. The next chapter (or day? is short-ish I think, so I might try to read it all tonight.

Once I finished playing Ukkari (a Japanese reading comprehension game), I started reading Fukakai because I want to finish it so that I’ll have finished the series and also because it’s a cute story. Once I’m done with it, I think I’ll hold off on starting other series because I’m already in the Ouran book club and I’m hoping to join the Nausicaa club if I can find a copy when I venture into the city. Juggling 5 series at once is a bit much I’m finding, so I don’t want to juggle 6 series but I’m also hoping that it’ll get easier as I go, especially as I get caught up with Dracula and improve my long form reading. Ahhh, I just remembered I’m joining the Behind the Super with You club, but since it’ll be a slower paced club, hopefully that will be alright? Plus I think it only has two volumes atm.

Anyhow, I would’ve kept reading Fukakai until I fell asleep last night, but it looked like the next chapter didn’t have page numbers, so I switched to JoJo and managed to fit in a whole extra chapter before bed!

二ノ国白き聖灰の女王
Ran around collecting materials and completing side quests. I like that in サムラの町, the characters are shivering before they get warm clothes. It’s a nice touch since other games usually have people running around with summer clothes in winter area and nothing happens. I also like that they added the dragon so you can fly around or teleport instead of encountering enemies.

• the rest of the preview for 寒冷前線コンダクター. It ended just when it was getting good—and right in the middle of a sentence, to boot! I probably will get this one, but I dunno about the rest of the series just yet… It’s kinda long.
• アオのハコ ch 3-4. Turns out I was only one week behind, which wasn’t as much as I thought!
• 54 pages of ステップファザー・ステップ, reading ch 5 Lonely Heart and part 1 of ch 6 Hand Cooler, leaving off on pg 282. The twins’ habit of speaking back and forth continuing/finishing each other’s sentences is even worse since they both have a cold and so can’t speak for long at a time. It’s a little more annoying but also it artificially inflates the page count a little more, so I ain’t exactly complaining lmao

三が日 (さんがにち) [n.] first three days of the New Year (Jan 1-3). Except it was written with a small hiragana が, which I can’t figure out how to type except by using a smaller font.

Today I finished Limbo’s side B and then played Scarecrow side A and B. One route and then two chapters to go. Which is good because the sequel is supposed to come tomorrow, I can’t wait!

Are you playing the first one in Japanese? If you are, how difficult do you consider it to be?

Yeah, I’ve actually been playing it along with the visual novel bookclub here on the forum. I think difficulty-wise from the games I’ve played I’d consider it kind of medium? The hardest part is the vocabulary I think, there’s a lot of crime/legal/medical vocabulary. Although I also played it in english first and I’ve found it a lot easier to figure out words that I don’t know based on context from what I already know so it might be easier than starting a game from scratch. So I thought this would be the first challenge where I missed no days. But then I’ve been really stressed out over the last few days - I got a new house sitter, my neighbour who is over-involved with the cat made her life hell, and I flew back from my road trip to intervene, but house-sitter has quit…so I missed yesterday. Almost made it!

On the plus side I now have a cat purring next to me.

I’ll post today’s reading tomorrow, as I’ll probably read a little more. I’ve caught up due to being on a plane then a train. Still behind on a lot. Way ahead on the BBC.
