Seasons was all about 竹(たけ)の子(こ) which can archaically/ poetically? written as 筍(たけのこ). It even came with a little takenoko rice recipe.

I was tight on time again, so only a chapter from JoJo again. I need more hours in a day. It’s interesting to think about this arc as horror though because I guess it would be Araki’s take on evil doppelgangers. Hopefully I’ll have more free time tonight.

I read the remainder of this week’s レベル７ assignment and about half of this week’s 告白 assignment. I wanted to finish it (this story keeps getting more interesting ) but I am very very tired.

That said, I might read some 幽霊を見ない in bed. It’s a fun little essay collection and I don’t have to look up many words which is convenient.

I only just today remembered I was planning to change the lil decorations surrounding the date to match the symbols used in my home post for that month. 14 posts I had to go back and edit…

• となりに ch 1. I haven’t finished a book in a few days and I don’t like that, so I grabbed this off my shelf to rectify that. But I didn’t actually get to read it until much later, and then I barely had the energy to get through ch 1 lmao and it’s pretty sparse on text
• 6 pages of ステップファザー・ステップ, reading ch 1-5 and leaving off on pg 54. Why would you write “walk-in closet” as “ウォークイン・クロゼット,” it looks like “working closet”! (Uh, yeah, I sure hope it does!)
• the demo (which was just the prologue) of にゃんらぶ 〜私の恋の見つけ方〜. I think I’ll be getting the full version for this. It’s on sale in the e-Shop currently. So far I like the patrol officer and the childhood friend, and I’m neutral toward the shop owner (as a romance option) and the 華道家, and I do not like the host. He’s a dick, and sure it’s probably gonna be that he’s actually a nice guy underneath and we see him warm up to her, and sure sometimes I like characters like that, but. He always orders huge bouquets, and while he doesn’t say it quite that rudely, his attitude is, “It’s just a bouquet, what’s taking you so long?” expecting it to take the same amount of time as a small bouquet. He’s an entitled asshole, thinks just because he’s pretty and popular the world will bend for him. Do not like him, at all. I’ll happily romance the other four, though.
• started playing Eternal Radiance, another Switch game I bought on sale. So far it’s way more VN than I was expecting. There is exploring and fighting monsters, but only after getting through the whole town in VN format. And it’s weird having B be the advance/select button and A the back button; the only button-mapping options I found were for battle, so I guess I’ll just have to get used to it (and hope it doesn’t mess me up when I switch to other games). Anyway, I do like it so far! And luckily the Chinese font doesn’t give me more than a little pause in places, if at all; I’m pretty much used to how the radicals vary from Japanese by now. (Now watch it throw me a curveball that it takes me a while to figure out tomorrow lol)

struggling to focus today. tried 死(し)にたがりの完全犯罪(かんぜんはんざい)と部屋(へや)に降(ふ)る七時前(しちじまえ)の雨(あめ) (some BL mystery manga i’ve only got chapter one of) and found it quite difficult. very text heavy, and i think the grammar was above my level. gave up on that after about 30 pages and read chapter one of 殺(ころ)し愛(あい) instead, which went easier, even if the names are abysmal (リッツラン? and the main girl’s name is シャトー???).

words that stood out, unexpected reading edition: 似非(えせ) (false, pseudo, sham. usu. kana but was in kanji), 反吐(へど) (vomiting, vomit), 上回(うわまわ)る (to exceed (esp. figures), to surpass, to be better than).

That is sooo, so close to sounding like “let’s run.” As it is, it almost sounds like some sort of flower, but doesn’t seem to be an actual word this time. Although リッツ is Ritz, as in the crackers, or the hotel. Ritz orchid.

Tileworld Chronicles - Markus Ascent Chapter 2, p. 14 - 19 and credits
It’s the end! Alright, so Markus and Celestina return to Lisa’s hut. Her father is okay! His name is Leo and he collects juwels from caves. Because of that he knows the caves in the vicinity very well and gives our two adventurers a hand-drawn map as thanks. So they’re off and finally reach a cave entrance. End of the second chapter.

Today I read up on 目, because on WaniKani we learn it as ‘eye’, but it seems that in combination with other words/kanji it can mean wildly different things (like perforation or mesh/stitches). No wonder I keep getting confused what that eye is doing in these sentences.

Anyway, turns out “目の前に” means something like “directly in front (of my eyes)”, so there’s still somewhat of a relation, making it easy to remember.

oh! My friend has shared so many crazy similes and expressions from that series like “please stop that cheese hamburger curry-like kind of thinking!” or “人類の平和を守ると誓った地球大統領みたいな顔でうなずくと、[…]” just to name a few xD. The manga was fun! Will get around to reading the LNs too sooner or later.

Yeah, the author seems to have an odd penchant for randomly inserting very dramatic figurative language lmao. The one that stood out to me last night was this one:

Something like ‘decisively turning around and walking away like tearing off a hanging piece of skin from an apple’. It’s… kind of a weird simile? And kind of requires some reader imagination but it’s novel at least!

It’s also a very easy read so far so I would recommend maybe taking a look when you need a break from the obscure kanji barrage from Kusuriya.

Hey there’ sorry for intruding. I hope everyone is doing great and reading consistently!
I’d like to ask an advice to the more experienced (or people that’s been studying for 2+ years in general).
Lately I’ve been reading a lot, I’m currently on the 鬼滅の刃 and I read one volume (190pg) every ~2-3 days, depending on commitments. For my standards, this is a lot but I still feel like I’m not learning words. I’m getting very confident with many grammar points and this alone is a big achievement, but vocab wise, I still spend all the time looking everything up in the jisho. Currently I think I’m learning 1-2 new vocabs per day in a way that remains and doesn’t require me to look it up again when I meet that vocab again later during the reading.
My question is (more of a question I’d just like to know your experiences), how and when did this improve for you? I’m not talking about specific study like the one done with WK, I’m mean, what improvements did you see while keep reading manga after manga, book after book? After how long did you begin feeling very comfortable with the vocabulary?

It’s always hard to tell with gradual processes, but I tend to feel like reading is more about solidifying my understanding of words I already kind of know; I’m sure I do learn some new words purely from exposure, but the more major rapid increases in words I know at least a bit have been when I was actively adding words to an SRS. (I worked through the parts of Core10K I didn’t already know some years back when I took JLPT N1; and I started with jpdb last year at a rate of 10 words a day. But there have been some long periods in between when I was either not using an SRS or only doing reviews and not adding new words.)

Hehe, thanks for the recommendation. Easy books are perfect for binging during summer, so I’ll keep it in mind :3 Have you gotten used to the slang in the series or do you have prior knowledge, perhaps? Right now, I remember learning 陰(いん)キャ from the manga.

I pretty much wasted all my reading time doing a N2 mock test. Besides that I read just some pages in manga magazines.

I think my case is very similar, in the first place I learn vocabs best through WK, I tried some solutions but WK helps me learning kanji and vocabs like nothing else. But there are periods I focus on it, and other periods when I just do 5 lessons ever other day, like now since I’m focusing on reading as much as I can. I also used to study thoroughly on Imabi but I’m currently doing one lesson per week at best. Priority is on the manga since I want to reach the point of the story reached in anime as far as possible don’t get me wrong tho, I’m still loving it.
I wonder what’ll happen if I just keep reading and reading and reading. Will I reach a point where I learnt many vocabs? What happened to you in the early stage of learning? Should I just slow down with reading and reintroduce more effort on SRS?

I’m leaving out questions on grammar because currently to me it feels like simply looking up (and asking questions here) grammar I meet while reading is more than enough
