Seasons was all about asparagus, like its entry into Japan (thank Edo era Dutch visitors), special acids in it, and how asparagus grown underground is white.

I was running really short on time last night (mostly a super busy day), so I opted to read a chapter of JoJo rather than try anything else.

I ended up having a lot of thoughts about JoJo. This is the part in the story with the con man who visits Koichi’s house in these chapters.

JoJo Part 4 Echoes spoilers

Having watched this bit in the anime twice, I always thought it was weirdly extreme for Koichi’s mom to try to hurt/kill herself (I don’t remember the severity in the anime, but I can imagine it’s the same as the manga). Only when having to read each speech bubble on its own did it occur to me that Mrs Hirose’s sudden compulsion is probably because of the Lock and the con man user’s suggestion. Which then makes Koichi’s Echoes changing her mind make a lot more sense. Sure we see Echoes change reality later on inanimate objects, but being able to actually control people would make Koichi one of the strongest characters in universe… if he wasn’t a below average high school student.

That said, it’s fascinating to think about Part 4 as horror. For most Western fans and myself included, for the first watch through, we typically think of it as high school slice of life due to the prevalence of the genre in anime I think. But Part 4 is listed on Japanese sources as horror for a reason. I think that doesn’t come across well because it’s a much more domestic take than most people are used to. Less Hollywood, more nightmare. For this bit, it’s the horror story of what if your loved ones stopped believing you and were convinced by a 3rd party that you committed horrible crimes?

I did most of next weeks (!!) レベル７ reading, I’m leaving a handful of pages to finish off tomorrow when the week opens.

I also read a decent chunk of パパ活女子 - the recent section was an interview with a person working at (in a corporate sense) a 交際クラブ and another interview with a パパ.

I’m very far behind my goal of 4 nonfiction books this year (sitting at: 0) so I’m hoping to wrap this one soonish and continue on with another one. Sadly not too many good options for nonfiction audiobooks in Japanese unless you like self help or history. I do like history…in English. But I’ve not yet been in the mood to tackle all the historical terms and names in Japanese yet. Maybe I should read an English book or two on Japanese history just to prime my brain

• several hours of Harvestella—though a lot of it had little reading, of course, and what there was was generally slow-going. I shoulda spent more time fishing after I unlocked that—I finished the demo, which was all of ch 1 & 2. Amazon and Walmart both have physical copies for $37, but I can’t tell if it includes language options or is just English. I mean, it should, right, since the version in the Nintendo e-Shop has multiple languages?

Why would you make one book stand out if I can’t read it

It’s like the bookshelves with a single red book in DQ! I’m supposed to be able to read it and find a diary entry or a recipe book or something!

I actually haven’t found anything I can interact with aside from chests, shiny spots, and gathering spots. No bookshelves, no wardrobes, no crates or barrels or pots… Why would you do this to me. Even My Time at Portia has some smashable crates ‘n stuff (though granted none in the city).

I started a new series, わたなれ… reading reviews after picking it up it seems the general reaction more tepid than I expected? It turns out it’s a bit more harem-y than what I wanted but ah well, I’ll see how it goes.

Word of the Day: 肉眼(にくがん) - the naked eye; the physical eye. They really couldn’t find a more elegant description than the ‘meat eyeball’ huh…

in what was probably a poor decision, i decided to finish the rest of 無抵抗主義(むていこうしゅぎ) (80 pages ish), which it turns out was more manga anthology than i thought. the titular story is the longest, but there are three more (one of which is a little gag epilogue to that story). oi kase was the most engaging and cohesive all the way through, which makes sense cos according to the あとがき this was the one the author actually set out to do for the magazine in the first place, but 駄々(だだ) was by no means bad (even if i can’t come to a conclusion on the ending).

overall thoughts: the character designs are distinctive (or at least easy to tell apart from one another), and i like how everyone is their own unique brand of awful but never really unlikeable. each story has issues, like the sudden (tw medical) cervical cancer in 駄々 or the buried gays in 無抵抗主義(むていこうしゅぎ), but for a first published volume it’s not bad.

Tileworld Chronicles - Markus Ascent Chapter 2, p. 11 - 15
Can you believe it, it’s だい in the wild! That was one grammar point that we read in the book club and it seemd to be old quite fashioned / not commonly in use. Here it is! Makes sense that it’s used by an older man.

Anyway, Celestina prepares medicine for Lisa’s father, and then Celestina and Markus hunt down the wolves that hurt the poor man. Another fun interaction between our two protagonist: Celestina praises Markus for getting so good with the sword and tells him he’s her number one student. And it was also funny when they were attacking the wolves: she made fun of him for talking like a ruffian and then did it too. アハハ！ Cute.

Read a bit over an hour of Paranormasight. Not gonna lie, it was kinda feeling tedious today. Maybe I need to let myself not read every file; they’re giant blocks of text and pretty slow going with manual lookups. Lots of unknowns. Though I do think the character backgrounds I was given add some pretty rich context. Could probably try to skip the ones about places, or random files like the long one on detective agencies I was given earlier. Shrug. The game itself is still interesting, though. But it hurts that I got the achievement for finishing the prologue just finally today, heh. 11 hours clocked, though I know I’ve left it on not very actively reading sometimes. Still, this is nearly the length of the whole VN at normal reading speeds – it’s not gonna be the short read I was promised. One way or another I’m confident I’ll see it through because I’ve invested enough time and I’m gonna be stubborn about it. Still think it’s a neat VN, but I do think at my level it makes for sorta poor quality practice. Which is making me slightly annoyed about my level but, hey, who doesn’t have those days. Probably not recommended to do it particularly soon @AzusaChan

Also, who can I get in contact with to suggest a law that all Japanese writing must put furigana on person and place names?

I’ve had a few VNs like that where even with texthooking, it was just too much trouble looking up so many things that I’ve had to put it to the side for later, so I can sympathize with that! It sounds like the game wouldn’t be too bad difficulty-wise if it weren’t for all the files? I did buy the game for later, but based on your review, I’ll probably hold off on playing it until my jp level is higher too.

Usually that’s not too bad in VNs since there’s voice acting but since that game doesn’t have any voice acting, that does sound very annoying. I hate it when they don’t include furigana on proper nouns

• イジらないで、長瀞さん ch 128 - general vibe spoilers for nagatoro and blue box: reading this back to back with blue box has made me realize that somehow, nagatoro has become a light sports series now lmao. They both have settled around the same mix of hs sports/sport-adjacent training and hs romance drama. Interesting to see how stories can drift in/around/out of/between genres over the course of a few years, especially reading them as chapters are released.

• 新完全マスター pg 48 → 58 - did two readings and finished section 2! this was the harder reading comprehension practice, on to the skim reading/extracting information practice section, and then i think the rest of the book after that is real practice problems for n3 reading. The rest of the book doesn’t flow as well into neat little 2 page sections, so not sure how i’m gonna break it down for practice, but we’re meaking headway regardless!
