NANA 1 (55% → 57%)

Exhausted today, so a very tiny read. Anywho, my thoughts from yesterday:so Nana says that she’ll sleep with Shoji if he says that he loves her (愛してる). He freaks out about saying it and ponders if he should try to pretend to be an American guy so that he can go through with it. And…I have mixed feelings, honestly. On the one hand, I get it: that word has a very strong connotation in Japanese (not sure if modern times are changing with regards to this, but it was probably still the case when this was written), so the idea of telling someone who you technically aren’t even dating that is a lot. On the other hand, they clearly have feelings for each other, and the fact that he didn’t even try to compromise with 好き or something is…interesting. Spoiler in a spoiler, but Nana says she “hears his heart” say it, and they hook up. I don’t really know what to make of that. It’s framed like a lovely moment, so is it? I guess she could just realize that she feels a sense of love coming from him: as the old song goes, it may have been “in his kiss.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time I’ve read NANA, so I’m incredibly biased toward the happiness of both Nanas, so I might just be trying to look for any signs of trouble. Speaking of, with the conclusion of part one of the volume, it occurs to me that Nana O. gets less “page time” than Nana K. Meanwhile, Nana O. is not only the only one on the front cover, but also the only one on the back. Kind of interesting.

Reading two books every day necessarily means I’m reading both more slowly than I would if I was reading them exclusively, so even if my daily page average is actually higher than last month, it feels like I’m barely making progress.

かがみの孤城 is boring me but I’m persevering. Judging from reviews, it will get way more tedious before it gets interesting, but so be it. I’m determined to listen to the whole twenty hours of it.

神去なあなあ日常 on the other hand is everything I was hoping for and much more.

Tomorrow I may take a break from one or both of those and start 四畳半神話大系 a day ahead of the club. I’m very curious if the current Natively level (43!) is appropriate. I haven’t read anything harder than L39, and I’m not even sure where the extra difficulty would lie in a book in the 40s. I guess I’ll find out soon enough.

Also keeping a close eye on the Mystery Club poll over at Natively. The way things are looking now, I’ll have to sit out the next pick too, this time because I’ve already read the book.

It’s 11pm here and I was so scared of losing the streak. Motivational was hard to find, but we made it!

I read a news story about 千葉ットマン from Satori Reader today. It’s the 3rd article from a series called “News”

By the time I read two sentences, I forgot all about motivation and ended up enjoying it. To be fair, I think that was possible only because it was one of the easiest piece I’ve read on Satori Reader so far.

I had a little bit more time today, so I read like half the manga in one sitting. I am still not sure what I should think about the story so far. There is espacially one situation which I think I would have found romantic when I was younger. But now it kind of disturbs me…

I don’t think I’ve seen 果実水 as a word before and it doesn’t have an entry in my yomichan setup either.

Story comments: Maomao’s foster father/grand uncle(? she didn’t elaborate) is visiting the palace. Medical expert, going to help pregnant lady deliver baby because it seems like a feet-first case, and that can apparently be dangerous to the mother. Also the villain from volume 1 or 2 showed up She’s definitely going to kidnap Maomao. I was hoping the talk between the main characters would take place first, but so far they’ve only agreed to have that talk happen soon-ish Come on now, I need to see development

I’m definitely going to fall asleep while reading in bed, so I’m doing a power move of posting before that happens, nyohoho Will include any further reading in tomorrow’s update instead.

Didn’t post yesterday as I was in the Jordanian desert (Wadi Rum). Lots of driving today to reach the Dead Sea (in a bus so I could read).

Read dream 2 of 夢十夜 today, and I must admit I am very confused. This was a rather difficult read, took me a while to figure out what was happening. I’ll have to re-read it tomorrow again.
