Finished volume 1 of Horimiya! I enjoyed this, I probably won’t immediately read the next volume but I’ll definitely put the series on my list for later.

Friday was a bit of a poor effort, and I was pretty tired on Saturday (but finished ホリミヤ).

I had more time to myself on Sunday so decided to start a new manga. But it’s 本好きの下剋上, so I’m basically going over what I read in the light novel so far. Finished it in 2 days, which was quite fun. And that’s with working a lot yesterday.

My plan from here is to read what I’m actually supposed to be reading. I think I’m accepting that I may not finish リンク, but I’m thinking of joining the natively club for チュベローズで待ってる, which I previously started to read then stopped again.

Words of the day
  • ヌッと. = (on-mim) suddenly. Like 出だし抜ぬけに.
  • 求もとむ = to request
  • 干ほされる = to be deprived of
  • 好すき好このんで = doing something out of preference (by choice)
  • 鼻白はなじろむ = to look disappointed. The latter half standalone is usually 白しらむ.
  • 総力そうりょくを挙あげて = devoting all one’s efforts
  • 後腐あとくされのないように = so as to prevent any future trouble
  • うだつが上あがらない = no hoping of getting ahead; not promising; mediocre. 卯建うだつ is a ridgepole to raise open a business.
  • 顔負かおまけ = being put to shame
  • 噛かませ犬いぬ = a foil. Setting up for losing and make MC rise ahead.
  • 軍拡競争ぐんかくきょうそう = race of military expansion. Opposite of disarmament (軍縮ぐんしゅく).
  • 謝絶しゃぜつ = declining. e.g. No Visitors.
  • バイク = motorcycle :motorcycle:. While 自転車じてんしゃ in the same context is bike :bike:.
  • 永久欠番えいきゅうけつばん = Retired number - Wikipedia. Removing the number out of circulation for honor :baseball:. 欠番けつばん is just a missing number.

Shorter reading session today. Practiced for exam, picked up my new laptop (finally! service took ridiculously long), spent time configuring settings and stuff. Time for sleep! Got exam tomorrow :mag: :eyes: :woman_scientist:

Today I read 4 pages of コンビニ人間。
I’m still hoping to finish it by the end of the year, and I think I can as long as I’m disciplined about it. :slight_smile:

  • Finished 押しかけギャルの中村さん 1 | L22. I’m not sure why I like this one so much because it skews super heavily in line with the traditional girl-teases-guy ecchi formula – he walks in on her in the shower twice, for godsakes – but I do, I really enjoyed it (despite the sort of bad cover art? I don’t know why they chose that one, the inside cover is much better). Maybe it’s just putting the main pair as young adults instead of high schoolers makes a lot of the traditional tropes more tolerable. Maybe it’s also that the main guy seems to have his life together moreso than the usual pathetic dweebs that headline this genre. Anyway, it was fun and I will definitely continue it.
  • Flipped a coin, so I’ve got to read something new next instead of continuing a series, not sure what yet.

I wasn’t really feeling doing a lot of difficult Japanese reading today so I picked up Ruri Dragon, a previous ABBC pick, and read the first week’s pages. This is pretty cute! I like the art style. It wasn’t too difficult to read, had no trouble understanding what was going on even when I ignored the odd contraction or something that I didn’t quite get.

I also went ahead and picked up the other 3 volumes of rental oniichan because I might as well satisfy my curiosity about what happens in the rest of that series. Annnnd bought the next ABBC pick. You would think I have plenty of options but whenever I look at my shelf on Bookwalker I’m like ugh…nothing to read.

Seasons :fallen_leaf: was about Beethoven’s Ninth, which I guess is well loved by Japan?? Seasons says it can be heard in stores and whatnot, but I’m pretty sure I’ve heard more Wham and Mariah Carey so far.

I read the sample for not a guy :cd: because it was nominated in the bbc… I would absolutely join and since it’s a bbc nominee, the pacing would probably be fine with other stuff.

Speaking of other stuff, I’m behind in all my clubs again… Tomorrow’s busy but Friday I should have a lot more time to myself so we’ll see how things go.

Yep it’s specifically the Ode to Joy chorus (what you linked) from Beethoven 9 that’s associated with holidays, not the whole symphony.

My friend in 大分 told me about this and it sound like it was more about concert events (ie not blasted out of the loudspeakers at a mall). When she was in school, she even learned how to sing the Ode to Joy chorus in German, and decades later, she still can. I was floored when she told me about it and then proceeded to sing it in flawless German :astonished_face: She can’t speak German, she had just remembered after all those years!

Here’s a link to a really interesting visual and historical explanation of how Beethoven’s 9th came to Japan by way of German WWI POWs, and the second half of this article goes even deeper into post-WWII reasons that it really took off.

Words of the day
  • キャンキャン. = (on-mim) yelp; protesting clamor
  • 店頭てんとう = storefront (outside window)
  • 八重歯やえば = high canine. Like a fang :tooth:
  • 有象無象うぞうむぞう = mob; common herd. To be or not to be, an elephant :elephant:
  • 見みもの = spectacle. Something like 見世物みせもの.
  • 歴代れきだい = successive generations. Of 火影ほかげ.
  • 一堂いちどうに会かいする = to assemble together, e.g. in a hall
  • お玉たまじゃくし = a tadpole. The latter part is 杓子しゃくし :bowl_with_spoon:.
