Genki Study Buddies - 「皆さんはGenkiを勉強しています」

I will likely amend my goal date once I get going on Genki I, but I didn’t want to overestimate my abilities since right now I am reviewing something I previously learned, and when I hit Genki II it will be all new content for me.

I feel overwhelmed because in addition to the vocabulary for each chapter there are random little charts of information to be memorized as well, which I never got a chance to learn when I was keeping up with a college class. For example the days of the month, and such. I am taking my time learning those now, and WaniKani is SO helpful with that!!

I wish WaniKani had existed back when I was still in school. I wish something like WaniKani existed for the Genki series. I can’t wait for EtoEto to be finished x___x

I can help you with that…
I can send you the textbook in your email…
I’ll pass you my email in Longest Thread if you want it.

I do have hinekidori’s awesome ANKI deck that uses all of Genki’s vocabulary linked up at the top in my OP. You can find it easily there. Search his name and Anki together to find how to use the program if you’re unfamiliar with it.

(I am way behind on those decks, compared to where I am in the textbook!)

I just found that ANKI deck! It’s great  I do have the genki book saved in Noteability. I have the physical book too, but I use my ipad a lot at night and find that is easiest to study.

Sweet! You and Spicy Dragon are getting me all fired up to study again.

Let’s see how many new items I can learn in 10-15 minutes before I have to head back across the street to work! XD

That’s very kind of you! But my book is on its way, my parents shipped it by bus so I can pick it up in a day or so  Which is okay cause I just got sick with a nasty cold so I can’t study for a day or so anyway :mask:

I noticed in chapter 4 they changed the word for next to from soba to chikaku, why is this? Why is chikaku better?

You can do it! Gambarimasu!

Aww… Hope you feel better soon!

The meanings are very similar, but ちかく has more of a “neighborhood” type area meaning, according to Jisho:
そば: Jisho.org: Japanese Dictionary
ちかく: Jisho.org: Japanese Dictionary

Although it’s hard to say why they made this particular decision, it could be just because they decided that ちかく is a simpler word. Or it could be that they wanted to use it to teach some grammar that doesn’t apply to そば. In addition, there’s several words that could mean “next to” (となり and よこ come to mind) and they’re not going to teach you all of them in Chapter 4

I knew となり! I kept looking for that one, it must come later in the book. Thank you for your reply, I should really remember about jisho, duh! And you make an excellent point about the possibility of it applying later. Thank you much!

みなさん I am having such a hard time staying motivated. I’m stuck progressing from ch 4 to 5. I think it’s the adjectives. こわいですね。>___< Anybody have any tricks or some helpful motivation? ありがとうございました!^____^

Be prepared. Chapter 3 really ups the anty.

Hi there!

  • Get an Anki deck for the vocab! - Personally I think that studying the vocabulary with anki is a great thing! It makes the vocab learning process much more automatic.

As for the grammar points, you really just have to reherese it until you know it! There are some things that I do to remember them better:

  • Write down the rules in a simple way - this forces you to think about the rules in it’s most simplistic way, making it easier to learn and reherse.

  • Do the excersises in the textbook together with the sound files - On the CD there are sound files for the textbook that goes over most excersises and tells you the answer straight away which makes it easier for you to spot mistakes and also motivates you to do the excersises faster.

example:
soundfile - “make these verbs into past tense”
soundfile - “たべる”
you - “たべました”
soundfile - “たべました”

And then it goes through all the workds in that excersise.

Chapter 9 done!

Must say that the rules for short forms are a bit funky and took some time but when you figure them out it is quite simple!

I would recomend people to really get both て-form and short forms down as they appear very often it seems!

On to chapter 10!

Yes that is true. Whenever I learn a new verb, I memorise the dictionary form, -masu form, nai form and te form. That covers all polite and plain form (past, present, affirmative and negative) combinations.

Great job everyone!

I don’t even know how to update this thread anymore…

@Gossepojk Yes! て-form and short forms are used a ton! The best part is though, for most (maybe all?) verbs, the form is the same and you just need to swap out the て and た (or で and だ) as needed for the form you want. So knowing that can really cut down on what you need to try and remember.

@alexbeldan I think you should just do more of those charts - that was great  As long as it’s not crazy unwieldy to keep track of all that info.

Keep it up guys, がんばって!
