Genki Study Buddies - 「皆さんはGenkiを勉強しています」

Sorry to hear about your day. I was supposed to start this week with lesson 1 and haven’t even cracked the book. I haven’t slept either. I feel partly dead right this second. Hopefully I can get 6 hours of sleep. Should be doing that now instead of posting… well, que sera sera.

Oh!!! That was supposed to be a shift, not a shit… ^_^;

Wow, that would’ve been an even worse day! O.O
The joys of auto-correct… and customer service…

I edited mine to reflect your edit. :slight_smile:

Thanks! I was surprised to see the stars… ***

NP.
I really need to update the sheet… :sweat_smile:

Don’t worry. Studying is more important.

Seems like I am on a roll! Though, it might be because I am traveling right now and have a lot of sparetime ^^^

Chapter 8 all done! However, it gets harder and harder to keep all the rules in my head now so we will have to see how chapter 9 goes :wink:

Good luck to everyone else out there! :kissing_heart:

Lesson six took me two weeks instead of one, but I finished it at last. We’ll see how Lesson 7 goes, hopefully I can go back to one chapter per week.

@Sylph I am about to start chapter 6 today :worried: is it a rough chapter or did you just get caught up with other things?

Well, there are a few rules you have to remember and I think this was the first chapter where most things were new for me, but I was kinda busy last week so…a bit of both.
I actually recommend finding one of the “te form songs” to help remember the rules, that was what really did it for me.

Something like this? Takes me back to my childhood learning French songs about the past tense :sweat_smile:

Hey Alex,

So I kinda had a whole bunch of back to back vacations and international travel and fell of the wagon last month, but I’m back and registered for the june N4! Finished Ch 17 yesterday and have begun chapter 18 as of this morning. With the actual JLPT coming up July 2nd, that means for 6 chapters I have about 10 weeks. Owing to the fact that I’d like at least 2 weeks to review the grammar prior to the test, that leaves me with 62 days, or one chapter for every 10 days. So my goal for now is to be finished with Ch 18 by April 26th.

I’m trying to catch up with the vocab and exercises in the first two chapters.

I’m just starting 9 myself. I felt 8 was dragging as I do the exercises with my tutor and couldn’t face another 2 or 3 sessions before moving on so I dropped a hint to her, ie that I’d done the exercises and had started 9, and we finished 8 on Friday. A good place to practice the conjugation rules is here. Also I copy bits out, for example I’ve copied the short form construction from 8 an 9 into a note in Evernote (copy image direct from pdf) so it’s all together. From what I can see 9 looks pretty straightforward but I’ll be on it for at least 2-3 weeks yet.

Yeah but the clever thing about Genki is that you are constantly revising what you’ve done in past chapters if you do a decent percentage of the exercises. However for me personally, I need more so I practice in other ways. For example I copy stuff out in Evernote or on paper, and I am making my own verb conjugation table.

I am also restarting my Genki journey! I took a year of Japanese in 2005 and I have made attempts throughout the years to re-learn, but this time I am recommitted! I am currently working on polishing up chapter 3 and memorizing grammar for chapter 4. I’m struggling with partially remembering the whole book, but not well enough to do much with and being frustrated starting all over. I went through and scanned all my old tests and then whited them out in notability so I can retake them as I go.

Welcome to the group, @ReJi00!
I really need to make a concerted effort to do Lesson 10 tomorrow… or perhaps even this evening after work if I’m not too zonked out.

Thank you! That sounds exciting! I hope you find the energy :slight_smile: I’m currently trying to work up the motivation to go through the practice exercises of chapter 4 and finish up the worksheets. I just finished homeschooling two kids though, so kind of burned out x__x. BUT! I am really excited to have found this forum for motivation :slight_smile: Seeing all of you guys zooming through gives me hope! I’d like to have gotten through Genki II by the end of next year, which I feel is completely do-able. So、頑張ってねみなさん!^__^

The end of 2018??? You can totally do that - even though you’re busy with life and homeschooling kids (what a task!).
I’m hoping I can hit the end of Genki I before the summer (should be doable, I’m so close) and Genki II by the end of September, I think. Really, I just want to be done Genki I as I hit WK level 20, and Genki II as I hit level 30. Both are doable goals, especially since I’m going so slowly with WK as of late… ^_^;

I failed miserably at keeping up, have been hopping back and forth between chapters 1 to 3 in an attempt to catch up with my class, and failed… and now I forgot my book at my parent’s place. sigh I give up for now. Taking a Genki break.
