I feel like I understood less than 50% of the episode today.
Also watched a bunch of vtubers today. JP Among Us session with Mayuzumi Kai as host. I don’t usually watch JP livers except for Shishiro Botan once in a while. It was very fun. At the end they adjusted the settings of the game and did an onigokko version.
A major storm out today with accompanying weather warnings, so no walk or podcasts today. Instead, today’s listening is more CCS.
Episode 31 was a really fun one of them being friends by day, rivals by night at the phase in the show I’m in. I really enjoy that kind of trope, so it was a nice episode.
Episode 32 on the other hand was a body swap episode, with the characters embarassing their swapped counterpart. I have a really hard time with second hand embarassment, so it was difficult to watch. Oh, and there was a lot more 関西弁 than usual this episode too, which also made it more challenging from a language standpoint too.
Anyway, 3 episodes left on this season, so when I watch those I’ll be finished my first anime season in Japanese. Next time I’m picking something with 12 episodes though.
Everyday Japanese Podcast #26. I’ve decided this will be my current podcast resource. It has minimal slurring and mumbling, and the speed and volume is pretty consistent. I still prefer YouTube though Anyway, this podcast was about メシテロ, or, as we call it, food porn.
Tomorrow forecasts a major storm, yesterday was a major storm (RIP my garden fence), but today was merely somewhat windy and rainy, so made sure to get a walk in today. And as usual, walks mean Japanese podcasts these days. Today’s experiment was Nihongo con Teppei Z. I’d previously tried Nihongo con Teppei for Beginners and found it too basic as a next podcast from Shun.
So difficulty wise, episode 596 was too much, I think. It was the first I listened to, so maybe that was just a bit of getting used to Teppei’s style. Or maybe’s he’s done what I sort of thought Shun would do and steadily dialled up the difficulty. Or maybe the topic was just less suited for the vocab I know. Whatever the reason, I decided to try from the start and episodes 1-3 were more in the difficulty range I was looking for for something to listen to on walks.
So probably I’ll listen to some more during the week. but I’m not quite ready to call the search over. I don’t really like Teppei’s presentation style, I guess. The sudden shifts between mumbling and high pitch are a lot, the intro volume is jarring compared to his intro speaking style. Also the way he chooses to repeat things but faster doesn’t seem to help. Either I got it the first time and then the repetition feels pointless, or I didn’t get it and it’s not helped by the repeat being faster.
I can’t even remember what I did for listening practice, that’s how little I was interestd in it. Okay, there was one new video in the Absolute Beginner playlist of Comprehensible Japanese, and on Friday Shannon and I struggled through some Genki workbook exercises together so I’m counting that too.
The regular gaps in my listening calendar is quite funny to see, though.
Satori Reader, episodes 24 & 25, approching the end…
Hakuoki : Kyoto Winds
VN - Otome
Follow the history of the Shisengumi along the Meiji Restoration
These two series give me the impression to understand nothing
The current episodes of Kiki-Mimi Radio use a vocabulary i’m really not familiar to, and in Hakuoki, they’re talking war and politics all the time. Well, Thanks to WK, I recognize 戦争, wich is not nothing I guess
Me too! So many people like him, but I can’t listen to him for more than a few minutes. The inconsistencies in volume and speed are somewhat distracting, it’s burdensome when you’re trying to focus on the vocabulary. And while I recognize that things like mumbling, slurred speech, and shifts in speed are all something we’ll have to get used to eventually, I feel like it’s more suited for upper intermediate/advanced level.
There are so many podcasts to try !
I’m sticking with Teppei for now, but I tried Comprehensible Japanese the other day and it kept me quite entertained
The thing is I don’t think I have the right level to choose widely for now
Listened to a combination of Simple Japanese Listening With Meg, and Japanese With Shun podcasts. Mainly re-listened to material from around 1-2 weeks ago, but listening at normal speed with the goal of listening all the way thru with no skipping back. Not trying to grasp every word, just get as much as I can without rewinding.
I feel the same. The first few weeks for me was spent skipping around just trying to find anything that I could listen to at all. Nihongo First Class was the first one I was able to latch onto and get meaningful listening practice out of. Then I stumbled into Simple Japanese Listening With Meg.
Moving my routines around a bit as my school workload increases, just did a slow-fast-shadowing session with yomujp again. This time it was the Himeji Castle article! I visited Himeji back in September and crossed off one of my greatest bucket list items. It was fun to read along with this article and learn some new facts about it

Listened to both readings from Quartet chapter 5, and Nihongo-Learning’s video making a terrarium (I keep trying to listen to podcasts but somehow always end up on YouTube )
