No walks today, so no podcasts. I joked about “RIP my fence” yesterday from Sunday’s storm, but put it back up yesterday. Turns out it was a waste, as today’s storm blew it over again, and even blew a section into the neighbour’s neighbour’s garden.

Watched the final 3 episodes of season 1 of cardcaptor sakura today for listening practice. Since most of the listening practice I’ve been doing have been long running podcasts with no real completion point, this is technically the first thing in the audio category I manage to mark complete.

In the process, I discovered yet another word for dinner from Touya - 晩飯(ばんめし)。I’ll add that to the list with 夕飯、晩ごはん and 夕食、I guess.

I also noticed that Meilin definitely says にっぽん and not にほん。Is this a common thing, or is it just a way of making her Japanese sound weird since she’s supposed to be Chinese? Like I’m aware it used to be にっぽん, but I thought that was archaic nowadays (even given that CCS is nearing 30 years old - excuse me while I feel old for a bit)

One of the episodes have them in an ice rink where the freeze card is playing havoc. It shows a thermometer going down in the episode to show the effects. They start complaining around 15C. My thoughts were: “They’re really complaining about 15C? In an ice rink?”

I think last time I watched this was the dub, though I have seen both the English dubs and watched it with Japanese subs before. Anyway, one of the English dubs plays up the Yue/you puns a bit for ambiguity, but it seems the Japanese version didn’t. I guess they do get the moon puns though

Episode 34 had a around-the-town quiz and the two they actually showed were kanji puns, so it was nice recognising those.

It’s been a few days since I last visited this 日本語の森 vocab lesson but I finally finished it! I want to add the time I spent pausing and adding words to my vocab srs but, even though I was still learning, I technically wasn’t listening (≧▽≦) Nevertheless, I also watched a Miku conversation video and an episode of FMA:B for my casual speech listening. I wanted to keep watching Boys Over Flowers but the Viki website has stopped working for me?? :sob:

So something a bit different today, from a suggestion by @TobiasW in the vtuber thread a few days ago. I watched a vtuber stream that (despite the name and topic) is 90% in Japanese. It was actually… pretty easy despite being 1 native and 1 fluent non-native not directly targeting language learners. Since it was mostly reacting to things they’ve seen in-game and talking about who did what, it’s actually pretty manageable. I guess what I was finding similarly to how I was finding CCS easier than say the Easy Japanese podcast is that the topic and additional context from the visual information matters a lot more than just the speaking speed for me. Plus exaggerated vtuber voices are much easier than some of the more mumbly/asmr-y podcasts too, I guess.

I was scrolling for my next の森 video and decided to watch their first lesson which was posted almost 11 years ago! It’s amazing that they’ve been making JLPT resources for so long while just being a small team. They definitely didn’t have their feet under them for teaching back then, the “lesson” was more like I being given a list of things to go study on my own ahaha :sweat_smile: But it looks like when ゆか先生 joined in 2019 they changed their tactics and became extremely efficient at creating lessons! The background of 日本語の森 is mostly useless information, I know, I was just surprised by how different they used to be ( ˙▿˙ )

Anyway, I settled on working through their 6-hour N3 vocab lesson for the next few days because I love a compilation and I always need vocab help. I think I watched some of this back in November but, frankly, everything in the two months leading up to the JLPT is a blur :melting_face:

Comprehensible Japanese is so fun, I’m addicted! And it’s so easy to learn new words when she says the word while pointing at the picture, and then repeats it a few times. It feels like learning the way kids do.

Why?

Making a late and quick home post just for the month of February and a very specific goal. I ended up failing N2 because I missed the minimum listening threshold by a mere 2 points (!!). Getting those results back really kinda shocked me into realizing how wildly different my reading and listening comprehension are, and that I should maybe take a little bit of time away from reading to focus on listening, at least to get it to a point where I can be a bit more comfortable.

What’s the Goal?

I was already thinking rather ambitiously, but after getting the test results back I decided to make it even more ambitious:

  • 100 hours of listening in February - now, most of this is going to be pretty extensive, probably. Not completely focused, but still at least paying attention (not “passive”). That’s just about 3.5 hours a day! That’s a lot!

To save myself some sanity, I’m going to count certain things I’d normally count for reading as listening for this: games with voice full voice acting, visual novels with voice acting, audiobooks that I listen to while reading a book book.

What will I be listening to?

I will be trying to break up what I listen to so I don’t do too much of any one thing, splitting broadly between more extensive listening with no subs, and slightly more intensive things while reading along with subs. My only real restriction is that I don’t want to count anything with english subs, which I normally count as a sorta 50/50 listening practice where I pick up at least a little bit here and there.

  • anime/shows with subs - using language reactor to be able to look things up
  • my japanese youtube account - which has mostly collected dust since I worked on it last fall, but has at least a few channels I’m interested in watching actively
  • Streamers and streamer vods - mainly vtubers and RTA in Japan speedrun videos, but they’re very easy to put on in the background while I do other things
  • Podcasts?? - there’s a few youtube podcasts that I wouldn’t mind listening to
  • Audiobooks?? - I’ve never actually tried doing the strategy of listening to something as I read it, but maybe something to investigate. Or using a yt readalong for an aozora short, something like that.
  • Visual Novels - I’ve been threatening to do it for months but I’m gonna finish the ARIA games like my life depends on it.

As a measure of progress, I’m going to rewatch something I watched on the first day again on the last day, just to see if it feels any different.
