I watched episode 1 of 春になったら. I’m not sure why I gravitate towards the sad Japanese shows, maybe because they deal with everyday life and are easier to understand. It does have some laughter amid sadness though, so recommended (weekly episode release).

Yuri!!! on Ice ep 6
Prioritized reading yesterday, so didn’t watch anything (was a long busy day). Today went fine. Katsuki mom talking with a dialect was almost like reading a manga with lots of slang in it (she didn’t have much screen time tho). Also characters from other parts of the world saying phrases or greetings I don’t know. Makes me feel even more gaikokujin
Jan 16 - Japanese /w Shun 30 mins
Jan 17 - Japanese /w Shun 90 mins
Shun podcast episodes last about 5-10 minutes and take me like 30-40 mins to get thru one. Definitely aimed at beginners like me; he speaks slow enough that I can pick out a good 50% of words without having to skip backwards.

Kind of a box-ticking one today, I watched one episode of CCS but after all the listening yesterday and a jumbo reading session, I don’t feel so bad Though I will have to watch 2 tomorrow to get my nice multiples of 3 progress back
Day 17
Tried two new podcasts: Everyday Japanese, and Easy Japanese.
Everyday Japanese Podcast:
Episode 1: Didn’t like it. Her speed was inconsistent which made it hard to differentiate between short and long vowel sounds. And her sentences were usually run-ons, they just weren’t constructed well.
Episode 13: Speed was much better. Her sentences were still chunky sometimes, but they were short enough that it didn’t become hard to follow along. Also this episode was about square watermelons.
Easy Japanese:
Episode 1: He slurred his words so much I could only listen to a few minutes.
Tried another random episode and it was a little bit better, but , similar to Everyday Japanese, his sentences were still broken up and didn’t flow smoothly.
What I’ve learned is to not judge based on the first episode alone. At this moment I prefer Everyday Japanese, but I’m going to try Nihongo con Teppei Z tomorrow, and then make a decision on which one to continue with.
Total time so far: 4:41:29
民なさん、よろしくお願い。
I am late to the game, but I wanted to join anyway.
1月15日- The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague episode 11
Black Clover episode 42
1月17日- today I tried Easy Japanese for the first time. Episode #700, 11:10
Welcome! I started a few days late too.

Yuri!!! on Ice ep 7
Great episode! The jump Triple Axle got me nostalgic for Yuzuru Hanyu Tripel Axel appreciation video explaining why his 3A in particular is amazing.

As I planned yesterday, I picked up two more episodes of CCS. No podcast walks today, it’s below 0 all week!
Today’s listening:
Japanese /w Shun 90 mins
Still focusing on comprehending full sentences before parsing them out word by word. Many phrases I understand without having to replay, but for some reason it’s really difficult to just go with knowing that I understood the meaning of a phrase without having heard it in English.

Temperature finally reached 1C, so went out walking again, bit of a longer walk to make up for some missed exercise, which also means more podcast time.

YomuJP 【JLPT N3】「東京駅」 | +11:00 | 11:00/1:10:00 | w/ shadowing |
AHHH I’ve been sick since last weekend and I haven’t gotten any listening done (or studying at all, for that matter) since then I’m scrambling to get back into my routine but the build-up of work has made it difficult to simply pick up where I left off. I definitely don’t think I’ll make it to my listening goals for this week unless I pack it all in on Saturday
This evening I did a nice slow-fast-shadow listen of the YomuJP 「東京駅」 article. I only recently just found this website (someone linked it forever ago but it’s been up in a tab for so long that I forgot who recommended it thank you, though!!) It’s nice to flip between some low-stakes non-fiction stories when I can’t mentally handle a lesson video.
See you tomorrow (hopefully) (¯▿¯)
I set up a VPN earlier for completely independent reasons while I was cleaning up and putting linux on my old laptop, and then I opened netflix to watch something while I was eating and realized that I had missed probably the main reason I should be using a VPN as a japanese learner 薬屋のひとりごと is on japanese netflix, along with a whole host of other fun stuff.
Watched the first episode of ぼっち・ざ・ろっく! with those subs and language reactor today. Language reactor also updated quite a bit since the last time I’ve used it, I like this new layout quite a bit more now.
Since I got my DVD/VHS player set-up last week, I’ve kinda been chewing on doing a big listening goal for the month of february, and learning that I can use netflix for more things only makes me more eager to do it.
It seems ambitious, but I think I’m gonna shoot for 60 hours of listening (w/o eng subs) in february. Movies, shows, youtube, podcasts, w/e, but relatively active listening. Will probably be making a post and updating thoughts on that in this thread as we get closer, just wanted to get something down

Out for a (very windy) walk today, and more podcast listening comes along with that. Now through the first year’s episodes of the podcast.
from 1月12日 to 1月19日
I was absent a bunch of days due to health issues, but I’m back at least to say I’ve listened some japanese almost every day, not always actively, but I’ve learnt some new words and I feel I understand more and more, so it’s positive^^
As you can see below, I binge-watched a lot of anime
![]() |
Title | Source | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
![]() |
Kiki-Mimi Radio | Satori Reader | Episodes 19 to 22 |
![]() |
Chihaya Furu | Anime | An intense well-paced sports anime in the world of Karuta. However, don’t expect much about the romance or the friendships in the story, they’re really showed at their bare minimum. |

The Apothecary Diaries | Anime | Love it so far, Mao Mao is so badass ![]() |

Fire Force (炎炎ノ消防隊) | Anime | Season 2 - Still hooked, which is surprising for a shonen ^^ |

Hakuoki | VN - Otome | Follow the history of the Shisengumi along the Meiji Restoration. Not my favorite otoge so far ![]() |
1月20日土曜日
Nihongo con Teppei for beginners, Episodes 13 (re-listened with subtitles) and 15 (it was supposed to talk about the weather but it talked about the Japan geography which I definitely must learn a little).
