:man_dancing: :ice_skate: Yuri!!! on Ice ep 11

Penultimate episode :eyes: It went fine, I think? Maybe because I interrupted myself in the middle of the episode with Mafumafu news, but there wasn’t as much tension as the previous episodes. Next episode will probably be better, I honestly can’t remember how the series ended.

Second conversation from Quartet chapter 5 speaking section, more Comprehensible Japanese, another Stardew Valley Let’s Play. I kinda like splitting time evenly between intensive and extensive listening.

New words:
(つる) crane (bird)
(まき) - pieces of firewood; kindling
(わな) - trap for catching animals; snare
(はた) - loom
複雑(ふくざつ) - complex; intricate; complicated

I learned a new phrase: 足を洗う = to quit (a shady business), to turn over a new leaf.

Also watched a Kanae zatsudan. Very relaxing after getting home from work. #癒し系

2024-01-27 :england: きんいろモザイク :tv: Anime 3 episodes 1h15m

So with CCS down, I decided to start a new anime in Japanese. I basically just looked at the level 10-20 range in Natively and picked one I recognised. So Kiniro Mosaic it is.

Episode one felt a bit like cheating since the first half took place in England and so had a lot of English spoken. It was kind of funny seeing which voice actors were good at English pronounciation when their characters weren’t supposed to be, or vice versa.

Can I mention how weird it is to see an anime episode set in England? Like these are places I’ve been for the scenes in London, and the English countryside and Irish countryside are quite similar, so it’s super weird seeing how familiar the scenery looks compared to how anime portrays the Japanese countryside. (However, she did also seem to find a time machine on the way to the countryside, or maybe the host family are just really into that retro vibe. It’s like being back in my great grandmother’s house. She was born in the 1800s.)

Mostly I’m trying to watch these anime raw, but this one also has some hard Japanese subs for the dialogue that’s in English in the Japanese dub. The choices are… interesting. I’m not sure this is actually the most useful to Japanese people lol:

Found an interesting use of では - アリスのせいでは for what context makes clear is “It isn’t alice’s fault”. Rather than contracting ではない into じゃない, the character just dropped the ない, I guess?

The line being translated here is “uhh… uhh…uhhh”:

Episode 2:

Again with the foreign characters (and only the foreign characters) saying にっぽん like Meiling in CCS a while ago. Is this like a stereotype of foreigner speak? TGAA even extended that into the English text.

Thanks to ご注文はうさぎですか?and School-Live, I keep expecting this character to pull out a weapon.

One thing I’ve noticed is kinda funny is the contrast between the realistic backgrounds and the quite chibi character designs.

Hi, I’m joining you late  I spend a lot of time watched anime, but I always use English subtitles. I’m going to try watching an anime that I’ve seen before without subtitles this time. I’ll check in tomorrow with the results

The pattern of listening continues. Eh, four out of seven days isn’t so bad.

Talked with Shannon about taling the JLPT. Pretty sure I too would have lots of trouble with the listening comprehension parts of it. I’m not sure I’ll ever take the test, but it would be nice to have an incentive so I could spite study my way through improving my listening skills.

:man_dancing: :ice_skate: Yuri!!! on Ice ep 12

That was the last episode. It was a nice rewatch, some parts were difficult when it comes to listening (e.g. technical explanations about skating or the competition and when they talk really fast). The beginning of the show has so many funny moments. I like the characters, the voice actors, the music and the art style. Some of the animation feels a bit clunky on the ice because the movement sometimes feels disconnected from the background, but it’s not like it’s easy to animate something like that. This is probably the second time I’ve rewatched this series and I’ll probably rewatch it again in the future. Overall 9/10.

With this I can check off the first box in my watching table, ah kimochii ii~

Been meaning to get back on the listening train for awhile now, I have a bit of a large backlog of videos from the (Japanese) channels I follow so I should probably start watching them again.

Thanks to @hotdogsuplex for continuing the listening challenge threads!

Today I watched this vid about catching colds:

Pretty sure I understood all of it, I didn’t need to pause at least to think about what was just said. Though, like the trend I’ve noticed from the other listening threads, I’m not sure how much I’m actually understanding from listening over reading the JP-subs, but I’m sure I was looking at the pictures for more of the time than reading.

Today I listened to another episode of Japanese from Small Talk. I started this one while cooking, and I have to say that either this episode was much harder, or cooking is much more distracting for my focus than walking, as I really didn’t get much for the first half of the podcast. Did get better near the end though.
