舞妓さんちのまかないさん・Kiyo in Kyoto (Home Thread - Beginner Book Club) - Volume 1

Or, if it’s not common, it’s not uncommon. I don’t know how many individual clubs do/have done it, but I’ve seen it on others, even recently. (風の谷のナウシカ is an example.)

I did it because it appeared to be the standard. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m doing it on mine, both because I’ve seen it done and I also think it gives value. If someone starts noticing the thread, they can have an idea if they can join by catching up if we’re at say week 3, might be harder if we’re at week 14

I added the vocab list to the first post and changed the title from “Week x” to “Now reading week x”, which is hopefully more clear!

I’ve watched the first six episodes of the drama (two-thirds of the series), and it’s quite a bit of fun. Definitely a lot more personality from the other characters, though that might be coming up later in the manga - we’re only three chapters in, after all. Unfortunately, a lot of maiko terminology and tradition gets mentioned without much explanation, so I’m constantly having to research things. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thank you all for joining the book club and for keeping the threads active, and I hope you enjoyed the first volume of this lovely story. I won’t be continuing it with an offshoot as I don’t currently have the time to handle that, but if someone is interested in it, feel free to take over.

What are your plans for this series?
  • I will keep reading the series, even if it’s on my own.
  • I’ll only keep reading if there’s an offshoot club.
  • I do not plan to continue this series.

Thanks so much snowwater for nominating the book and hosting the club! And thank you everyone else for reading along and discussing together! I really appreciated the generous knowledge-sharing, since a lot of my questions seemed impossible to figure out on my own, even with the internet. I enjoyed the book a lot and reading it along with everyone else has been a lot of fun!

Yes, thanks for organising the club @snowwater and making everything run so smoothly! I’m not going to carry on reading the manga for now but I am going to check out the series on Netflix.

Thanks for introducing us to it. I enjoyed the insights into geisha life, reminded me of reading Memoirs of a Geisha in English but with much nicer people in the house!

I am a little disappointed that despite reading it for the last few weeks, I still can’t remember the name of this manga in Japanese! Kiyo in Kyoto is a much easier title!

I’m kind of lying with my vote. I might keep reading without an offshoot club. But I’d much prefer there was one. Unfortunately I don’t think I have the energy to run a second club.

If we form a kansai-ben support club it will inevitably turn into a Kiyo-chan club

Thanks for running this book club @snowwater
I like this story very much, I have finished the Japanese drama and anime too.
And it is a very good manga to learn Kansai ben. I already bought Book 2 & 3, so will continue reading this manga.

Is there anyone who’s been waiting all year for the chance to run an offshoot book club, and this is the one?

If not, I’ll post a thread for it, and we can work out scheduling. (This would be a good opportunity for me to refine/improve the code/interface of my book club manager project.)
