The point of this book club is to enjoy reading together and pool our resources and questions so that we can more easily enjoy the book. That said, if you have to start late or you are reading this after the club has finished, you are still welcome to read and post with us.

Story

This volume covers the 原始 (Prehistoric/Ancient Japan) and beginning of the 古墳 Kofun periods. Specifically it’s divided into 旧石器時代 (Paleolithic Era), 縄文時代 (Jōmon Era), 弥生時代 (Yayoi Era), and 古墳時代 (Kofun Era) periods. Each era has a unique story with new and distinct characters. It tells the story of Japan’s progression from the very first inhabitants; to developing stone, clay, metal tools; becoming more sedentary; creation/developing of Shinto practices; introducing rice cultivation, producing glass and silk, forming kingdoms with new architectural achievements, and finally consolidating into a larger empire, with the establishment of the Imperial Family. As the story and civilization progresses, you get diagrams and explanations of newly acquired/developed technology, rituals, construction patterns, etc.

Discussion Guidelines

Spoiler Courtesy

Since not all of us are super familiar with Japanese history, we will be observing the regular spoiler etiquette! Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice

  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

By skimming the book a bit, looks pretty dense in text (at least at the beginning), plus I can imagine that it’s the kind of book where I get sent into rabbit holes on Wikipedia every second page, so I think taking it easy with 2 weeks per chapter sounds good

It looks good, but you’ve sneakily made it look like a seven-week schedule by repeating numbers 6 and 7. :stuck_out_tongue:

That was quite sneaky wasn’t it? Now that it’s been spotted I’ll have to fix it. :stuck_out_tongue:

The idea of splitting every chapter sounds miserable to me but also I understand that reading 50 pages/week is probably a bit much for this club. Not sure what else we can do.

I do plan to go through and try to find stopping points within a couple pages of the middle of each chapter so it won’t just be mid-conversation or something like that. Hopefully that will ease the pain a little …

I can’t wait to start. Now I only join one book discussion.

The schedule looks great, thanks! I agree we might need time for rabbit holes.

I got the Bookwalker version, and the bulk of front matter seems to be missing??

Maybe someone with a physical copy can enlighten me what I’m missing

My Ch 1 starts on electronic page 6 but according to the printed pages it’s p14 as per toc. That means I am missing 8 pages!

My first pages look like this:
P1 cover
pp2-3 charcters overview
pp4-5 table of contents
Then Ch 1 starts

And… the back matter after Ch 4 is not there :face_with_crossed_out_eyes: bummer

Well that sucks, kinda wish I’d known before I bought the bookwalker versions. Oh well, we’ll probably survive.

Yeah I’ve never seen so much missing from a digital edition so i never would have thought to check.

I went back to the sales page and saw this:
まんがのみを収録した【電子特別版】

Personally, I think they should have formulated it stronger like a warning, I didn’t really know the implications of it and probably just skipped right over it and forgot about it. I don’t remember it catching my attention at all and I’m not in the habit of double checking things like that, although now I’ll start.

The character overview is glued to the cover of my physical.
preface
p1 - mammoth
p2-3 Sannaimaruyama ruins info pages
p4-5 Yoshinogari ruins info pages
p6-7 Kofun and Fukusou items info pages
p8-11 how to read I think
p12-13 table of contents
p14 ch1 starts

Chapter 4 is 164-214 and about 古墳づくりと大和の大王
Then there’s a special lesson from 215 to 223

Thanks so much :sparkles:

Oh, it is too. I thought it was just the inside cover.

I hate that practice. It makes the cover bulge weirdly when the book is open.

YESS! I hate it. The first time I got a Japanese book like that I genuinely thought it was a defect when they made it, but then I got a bunch of others with the same “feature”.

Kindle* version too. Ridiculous.

* it does actually have the Bookwalker logo in it, so same files I imagine :upside_down_face:

Here’s page 8-9 at least:

But if they have a decent enough image file to use for the preview of the paperback version, why couldn’t they just have added it to the eBook?

Since most folks are reading digitally, let’s skip the front and back matter parts of the schedule. But maybe those of us with physical copies could share some of those pages throughout the club. I was kind of dreading reading them all in one lump anyway.

I would love that! I was honestly a bit miffed when I saw those were lacking from the ebook

Yeah same. I love these big illustrations too, I remember spending so much time poring over stuff like that as a kid:

Do you also have page 10-11 or just 8-9?
