I think y’all might find this interesting. One of the places I used to live in in Japan had a small 古墳. By the time I lived there, only the shape was left of it. However, the municipality promoted snow sledding on it in winter to better and tangibly connect local kids to history.
Does, uh… does that actually work? Hey kids, here’s a hill you can sled down! Except it’s not a hill, it’s a kofun! There’s a dead guy underneath!
I visited a kofun adjacent to Todoroki Ravine a couple of trips ago, and there’s some stairs going up and a nice plaque at the top, but ultimately it’s really just a hill. Got trees growing on it and everything.
They removed the dead guy a long time ago lol. I thought it was pretty macabre too, especially because I was with my friend who refused to walk past some old graves in the forest on a hike, but she acted like it’s totally normal.
Yeah, they cleared the trees who knows when, but otherwise it’s a hill with historical significance lol
In the next town over, they also had stairs and plaque (and possibly a slide, but I don’t remember if it started on the kofun or just next to it) and also a stone coffin type thing. I don’t remember if that was a cast or the original though.
