ルリドラゴン ・ Ruri Dragon 🐲 Week 8

Finally got around to finishing Week 8. Things definitely went a lot quicker with this section. I don’t feel like I did so well last week and haven’t even used Wanikani and Bunpro in a while now. This is about the only thing I’m keeping up with. I really don’t like some of the recent changes to Wanikani. Anyway, translation attempt.

Chapter 3: I’m a dragon

Mum: You said you were going for three days already!?

お母さん:そろそろ行かないと後で後悔するぞ。
Mum: If you don’t go soon, you’ll regret it afterwards.

お母さん:火傷も もう治ったでしょ?
Mum: The burns also healed already, right?

ルリ:3日ちょいで治ると思わなかったもん。

お母さん:言ったでしょ龍の代謝は人並み外れてるから。

お母さん:ほんとあんた引きこもり体質だね…
Mum: You really are a hikikomori…

お母さん:これも遺伝だったりして。
Mum: If only this was also genetic…

お母さん:とりあえず朝食べてから考えな。
Mum: Now, after you’ve eaten breakfast, think about it.

お母さん:何どうしたの。
Mum: What’s the matter?

お母さん:食べながらスマホ見ちゃダメだぞ〜
Mum: If you eat while looking at your smartphone, it’s not good.

ルリ:ユカが今からウチ来るって…
Ruri: Yuka said she’ll come over right now.

お母さん:いいじゃん一緒に行きなよ。

お母さん:ほれ急いで食べな。
Mum: Right, hurry up and eat!

ルリ:ぐぬぬ
Ruri: Ugh…

お母さん:大丈夫だって嫌なの最初だけだから。
Mum: You’ll be okay. You’ll only dislike it at first.

お母さん:そんな嫌ならもう休む?
Mum: If it’s that bad, do you already need a break?

お母さん:別にいいよどうせあんた半分人間じゃないんだから。
Mum: That’s not particularly good. In any case, you’re not even half-human.

お母さん:無理して行く義務はないよ。
Mum: It’s not your duty to go and work too hard.

ルリ:いや!行くもん。
Ruri: No! I’ll go.

ルリ:ユカ来てるし!

Yuka: Right, let’s go! Your hair’s all ruffled today, you know?

ルリ:急いで降りて来たもん。
Ruri: I came down in a hurry.

ユカ:すげーほんとに綺麗さっぱり火傷治ってる。
Yuka: Wow, the burn really got completely better.

ルリ:これもドラゴンの力なんだって。
Ruri: This is also a dragon power of mine.

ユカ:そうなのか。
Yuka: Is that so?

It’s more along the lines of “it seems this is also genetic” as the dad is obviously a shut-in

I’m pretty sure it’s the number of friends coming there that is increasing

p94-96

別にいいよ means “it’s okay”. Mom is angry a bit “Alright if that’s what you want, just stay home, you’re not even completely human after all”

The rest is either completely fine, or close enough imo, great job

Yep, as Gorbit says, it’s the number of friends that is increasing.

うちに来る | お友達が | 増え続けるかもよ?
Coming to the house | your friends (object) | will continue to increase, probably?
Perhaps the amount of friends coming to visit you will continue to increase?

It’s not very obvious, posting stuff at 4am, 3am, 5am, the time when people normally are very much asleep.

I’m almost caught back up. A lot less questions this week, I’m glad to be through that tough section. Hopefully as we get back to school the dialogue won’t be too dense.

Here から is sort of used as a “believe me, it will” kind of expression. “It will make your mood better”/“It will make you feel better”

p91-92

人並み外れてる is pretty much one expression that means “to be superhuman”
“Dragons’ healing abilities are superhuman”

The rough outline is there, but I don’t feel like the English is perfectly accurate. She’s just saying, that “You really are a shut-in, huh?”

Because this means “It’s like this is also hereditary” or “Maybe this is also hereditary”. She isn’t saying that it is, she’s just implying, that she’s like her dad.

p93-94

It’s the volitional form of i-adjectives. If you think about how hard it is to wrap your head around what volitional form entails for an adjective, you will know exactly why you don’t see it often. In actual speech, ~いだろう is more common

p95-96

Well, it has two sentences there, the 大丈夫だって part is pretty obvious, so let’s just do the 嫌なの最初だけだから
嫌なの → the disliked thing (nominalized)
最初だけだ → to be only the first time
から → since
“since it’s only the first time that will be disliked”
“It will only feel bad for the first time” or something along those lines

“If you hate it that much, why don’t you (already) take a break?”

I think at one point we had a conversation about stupid uses of double furigana. Stuff like when you want to show to the reader, that you actually mean a different word, but you want to flex with cool kanji, but you also want to make sure they are able to read the cool kanji only you know.

And then there’s the case, when you want to make sure they can read even the original word, then you get 3 levels of ruby tags

eek!! I’m just now starting Week 8… basically I picked up a second job recently and so my time for Japanese was greatly diminished, however, I will continue reading despite being behind  I got this!! :muscle:

Progressing along, this week’s content was probably one of the easierst yet, which is a good sign. I have 12 or so vocab terms I looked up, but the whole section from page 90 to 95 I managed to basically read continously which I’m pretty happy with.

I may not get 100% every exact grammar, but the meaning being clear enough to keep progressing is a good feeling.
