Discussion Guidelines

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice

  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

And with that longer chapter, we have wrapped up Chapter 5!

We are very quickly approaching the end. Just Chapter 6 and the omake remain.

Just a quick note: at the beginning of this week, the ら is often going to be な because he has a cold.

I wonder how much this dialogue broke its portion of the auto-generated vocabulary sheet.

… Why can he pronounce things like ごめん and 飲んで but not ない?

I wondered the same thing. :joy:

なんのもてなしもできら。。。
DeepL says this means something like “I can’t offer any hospitality” which makes sense but can somebody help me break down the sentence word for word?

My attempt:
なんの - not any
もて - to bring (te form)
なし = without
できら = to be able to

Pg. 132

なんの = No; not any

もてなし = hospitality

出来ら = cannot do (with the implied ない following afterwards, but he is interrupted by his sneeze)

The ら is the implied ない, or the start of it, but it’s coming out weird because of his blocked nose. Don’t forget which verb group できる is in. :stuck_out_tongue:

告白フラグ

What does this phrase mean? Confession flag? Is it a set phrase in Japanese? If so I haven’t been able to to google it.

Page 140

It’s a reference to dating sims and similar games, where completing specific objects in the game sets a binary flag in the game’s progress data. When this flag is set, a specific event is triggered.

One flag common to dating sims (and I’m guessing some visual novels) is the “confession flag”, where a character confesses to you.

Here’s an example of “flag” being mentioned in another manga:

It’s not the confession itself that’s the flag, rather the flag is an obvious signal that a confession is about to occur, usually in the form of an over-used trope - i.e. the question “is there anyone you like” is an indicator that the asker is going to follow up with “do you like me?”

On a similar vein, a death flag would be a character in a war zone talking about what they’re going to do when the war is over - odds are they’ll be dead by the end of the scene.

True.

I rewrote that sentence a few times to be not-too-technical, and ended up wording it incorrectly.

Phew.

Finally, I can cut loose and read ahead lol

Just a little question about nuance.

In the sentence, 小学校以来じゃない家に友達が来るなんて。
What does the なんて add?

From what I can tell looking over the Jisho definition, it’s almost adding a little bit of surprise? Like, “Wow, you’ve not had any friends over since primary school!” kinda vibe.

Via Maggie-sensei:

When to use:

  1. When you emphasize the word or sentence which comes before なんて and express your feelings such as surprise (either positive or negative), disgust, admiration, happiness, disbelief, etc.

Ah thank you, that makes it clearer!

So I’m feeling it probably reads a little closer to “You haven’t had friends actually come to the house since primary school”?

So she’s not necessarily shocked about the friend aspect, just that they came over.

No, she’s definitely shocked that he has friends. So is he. :stuck_out_tongue:

Which is really mean to poor (later vol spoilers) Shindou!

Finally caught up on this week.

Also, seems like these later threads aren’t getting a lot of engagement… Did a lot of people drop the book?
