Discussion Guidelines
Spoiler Courtesy
Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.
Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags
Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).
Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:
Example
This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.
The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Handwritten text this week
Note: Physical book pages are listed in parentheses.
This is a fun chapter. One thing I love about horimiya is it’s not afraid to make Hori the butt of the joke either (though honestly a lot of shoujo is like that anyway I guess now that I think about it). Anyway, I accidentally read a few pages over, but eh.
I’m sorry for being so incative in those threads, I basically just don’t know what to say
But I love that pick, it’s really good fun! Thanks for nominating, (picking,) hosting and providing the handwritten texts for it (I am really struggling with them, still … I try deciphering them on my own first and am very happy if I succeed but I’m very glad for the provided transcript - I wouldn’t get each without it ^^‘’)
The handwritten text is definitely the toughest bit of this manga, made worse by the digital edition not being the best quality in the world.
Hopefully I always manage to catch all of the important handwritten text. Sometimes it blends more into the background and I miss it (I caught two spots in this week that I missed and had to add already).
Finally caught up after falling a couple of weeks behind due to lack of time. I realised today that I think I actually already read Horimiya in English a few years ago, which explains why some of the non-anime stuff also seems familiar to me But that’s actually probably a positive for the first proper manga I’m reading in Japanese, as my faint memory of it gives me some extra context when I need it…
disgraceful is an odd word for that, embarassing more like.
“At the time when we are together, if you have longer hair, is that embarassing?”
“Are you embarassed when we are together and your hair is longer?”
The entire conversation is
“I see that idol everywhere nowadays”,
“But I don’t like girls with short hair. Maybe because mine is also long”
“You feel embarassed when you are together with them and your hair is longer?”
“Not embarassed, it’s just unnatural, but I don’t feel like that right now”
So for some reason, I always thought the idol they’re admiring on the first page was Hori’s mother with her work face on. Reading it this time… I realised the chapter doesn’t even imply that to be the case, at all. (Possibly I’m thinking of a different series, in which it turns out one of the main characters is the daughter of a famous model, though I don’t recall which at the moment. Though Noda in GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class is the younger sister of one. So is Shino in Kiniro Mosaic. Those aren’t the ones I’m thinking of.)
hate to be nitpicky but horimiya is actually a shounen romance series (not as common as shoujo romance but tonally quite distinct from it, also published in a shounen magazine called Monthly GFantasy)
夕飯くらい食べて行けばいいのに
It would have been good if you’d have at least come for dinner
いつもねーあそんでくれるの?
Always, can I go and play with them? (I assume it cuts to midway through a conversation between Souta and his mum, and they’re talking about a kid in his class, but what is the いつも referring to?)
p99
なんか、探偵モンに出け来る。犯人みたいに黒い人。
Like…someone who appears in a detective story. Resembling a suspicious criminal. (Again, is this Hori’s opinion on the kid that Souta wants to play with?)
一度二人きりで、お話ししてみたいわ
I’ll like to talk with just the two of us.
二人きりで何話すのよ
What do you want to talk about with just the two of us?
Not Souta’s class, but Hori’s class. 京子のクラスの子. “[The kid] (which is to say, Miyamura), is always coming [here] to play.” There’s an exclamation mark at the end of that sentence, not a question mark.
So is 京子 a term for kid? I can’t find any translation for this. Or does it still mean “The kid from Kyoko’s class” and we’re just meant to know that Kyoko is the teacher? Sorry if I’m completely missing something here!
