イクサガミ is a fictitious story at the beginning of the Meiji era (Meiji 11). A mysterious notice is spread throughout Japan. Those “skilled in martial arts” are promised an opportunity to obtain 100,00 yen by participating in a game called Kodoku.
Each participant has a wooden tablet worth 1 point and are told “Take them from one another! The method does not matter!”
Swordsman Saga Shūjirō advances through this deadly contest while protecting Futaba, a 12-year-old girl drawn into the life-and-death struggle.
But formidable enemies stand in their path…

There’s also a Netflix adaptation that apparently “roughly” follows the story Netflix.

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).

Posting Advice

  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Feel free to give feedback for the proposed schedule (page counts are rough estimates give or take 2 pages)

The book does have subchapters which can be used for a more smooth distribution across the weeks.
Week 2, 5, and 7 I’m not too happy with. But after giving it a decent amount of thought I think the 1 week - 1 chapter pace roughly works out for the club. I think I’d prefer this uneven style over breaking up the chapters more.

I agree. There are some uneven weeks, but as the Advanced Club aims for 30-50 pages, it falls very nicely into this bracket. And if people are really struggling, they can catch up in the following weeks which are much lighter. :+1: from me for the proposed schedule!

I meant Prologue + chapter 1 subchapter 1 and 2.
The chapters are named with 大字+ノ章 and the subchapters are named 一、二、三、四、五 with the normal Japanese characters.

Week one will be 3 subchapters (prologue and chapter 1 (1 + 2)) and week 2 will also be 3 subchapters (rest of chapter 1 (3 + 4 + 5))

Yep, my bad - when I realized that chapter 1 is ~60 pages, I understood that this must be the subchapters, but I initially thought they were explanations for the numbers :woman_facepalming:
