よつばと! Vol 8 Discussion Thread (Yotsuba&! Reading Club)

Thank you so much @windupbird and @Kazzeon! Your replies are so helpful! I’ll get on and study them in depth right away…

… but first, just to quote myself…

… today I went along to the Yotsuba exhibition in Ikebukuro! You can read all about it on the main thread! It was great!

Me again with more questions. Thank you so much Kazzeon, Belthazar, and windupbird, for your amazing patience. You are so kind. My apologies for learning this stuff so slowly, and for being so behind, but anyway, here goes…

Page 47

あれくらい 誰でも撮れますよ
あれ - that
くらい - about, apx
誰でも - anyone
撮れます - to be able to photograph, in masu form
よ - sentence ending particle

Can someone tell me what あれくらい means? It looks like “that” + “about”, but what does that mean? (I take it this is Tora saying “oh anyone can take pictures like that”. Does あれくらい mean “like that”?)

Page 48

なんだそのかみ - any ideas?
(The best I can come up with is “what is that…”)

Page 49

無理すんな - impossible + すんな. Can someone please tell me what すんな might mean?

さいですか - likewise, can someone help me out with さい here? Is it difference, circumstances, repeated, the most, or something else entirely?

Page 57

そんななの? - そんな means “such” or “like that”, の is a question particle, but what is that second な in the middle of the sentence?

Page 61 - dad tells Yotsuba to take off her shoes, but ends his sentence with け. Any ideas what that is?

Page 62 - 何年生だっけ? - Is he ending a sentence with け again here?

Page 63 - can someone help with やめとけ? Clearly it is from “to stop”, but what is that ending?

Thank you so much again for all your help!

Basically, yeah.

“What is that hair?” or “What’s with that hair?” Yep. :stuck_out_tongue:

するな

際 on the occasion of; circumstances
Something like, “(Paying attention to the) circumstances, huh?” or “It’s the occasion, huh?”

“Is it like that?”

“Take off your shoes, and wear these.” Imperative 履け

This time he is. :stuck_out_tongue:
He also does it on the previous bubble.

風香ちゃん何組って言ってたっけ?“Which group did Fuuka say she was in?”
何年生だっけ? “Which grade was she in?”

やめとけ → やめておけ → imperative (やめておく)
It’s basically “stop”. I think, in this case, it’s more nuance than doing something in advance, though. :stuck_out_tongue:

You’re not behind anymore! I still haven’t read this chapter.
I’ve been extra busy and extra sick. :mask:

Yeah, pretty much. (Though, one does idly wonder why it’s あれ - surely the subject matter at hand is physically or psychologically close to one of those two.)

“Difference” is what Yen Press has gone with…

I think it’s because the pictures are over there.
あの写真くらい :stuck_out_tongue:

Like, sure, it’s different, but Yotsuba says お食事はこういうの or something like that.
So I thought it made more sense to talk about the circumstances they’re in right now (eating at a restaurant).

I guess he’s not actually holding them right at this moment…

Thank you both again, Belthazar and Kazzeon, so much for all your help! I am so very lucky to have all your amazing support! Thank you! Kazzeon, I am studying your amazing answers right now. (The biggest surprise has been the け ending particle!). Thank you so much!

Hope you’re feeling better now! If not, hope you get well soon!

A little better, yeah. Still extra busy, though. :weary:

Oops! I was asleep.

Discussion of Chapter 52 starts here.

Remember you can always ask questions about previous chapters.

I didn’t read last week’s chapter, but I’m no longer sick, so I’ll read it as soon as I can. :stuck_out_tongue:

I done read it.

Oh, Daddy. How are you swayed by Yotsuba’s logic so easily?

:joy:
Oh!

It says パウンドケーキ on the menu, so it’s not really a surprise that Yotsuba was disappointed, but the reader shouldn’t be. :stuck_out_tongue:

Is pound cake not common? I don’t really know much about food, but I still knew what it was. :joy:

Oh, man. :cold_sweat:

She gets it.

Oof, I can feel that in my bones.

Hey, she does have a point.
If you tell someone, or are told by someone, “See you tomorrow.” it’s usually because you do plan on seeing them tomorrow, not just saying that, that would be, “See you soon.” or something.
Even then, I don’t think かーちゃん would mind.
Also, please no "Oh, Daddy."s in my Christian server. :eyes:

Dad.exe has stopped working

Praise the sun! (the clouds?)

I mean, you can’t really expect telling Yotsuba she can fly and her not doing it. :stuck_out_tongue:

So, I noticed something in this chapter. I’ve been reading from a (… cough) digital version, which starting from this volume appears to be using the original magazine chapters rather than the tankobon version (and judging by the screenshots you’ve posted, @Kazzeon, I rather suspect you’re reading from the same one :stuck_out_tongue:). In my Yen Press copy, almost every single panel looks a bit different - for the most part, backgrounds have been added to prevously blank panels, or existing backgrounds have been retouched, but occasionally panels have been redrawn, or even replaced with something completely new. For example, here’s the page I first noticed differences on, and this basically has one example of each sort of change:

You a cop? :eyes:

Oh, man. It’s so much better, but alas. I already read it in English anyway, so I don’t mind that much.
internally minds a lot.

I had watched a video comparison, but I didn’t think it was to that degree.

I knew something was wrong when I said that about it feeling weird!
Looking for an alternative, will contact you if I find anything. Seems plausible.

Nope. Durty Tim can vouch for me. :slightly_smiling_face:

Mostly it’s better, yeah, but it’s kinda weird in the new version how Yotsuba just disappears between panels.

Link? :slightly_smiling_face:

Oh? Is that what you meant? :stuck_out_tongue:

Now that I think about it, they may have been just a few images on Google Search, and I can’t find them. :joy:

Interesting! Looking at those panels Kazzeon posted, I have a new appreciation for all the gorgeous retouching that occurred on the rain panels for the tankobon version. xD I also think it’s funny that they added a lot of the mumbling later (it’s not really mumbling, but that’s how I think of it in my head for whatever reason. Is there a proper term for that tiny handwritten aside text?)

Anyway, this was a cute chapter. I love how Yotsuba has absolutely no fear of typhoons xD

Also, random update: the place near me that I thought sold crepes like the ones in chapter 51 actually sold ice cream wrapped in crepes. And it was also out of business.

Oof. Hope you get crepes at some point.

Wow! That’s a huge difference! Can you tell me what volume and page that is so I can check to see what I have in my copy (I have the Japanese paper editions)? Thank you!

I managed to spend two hours in the library today with Yotsuba and a dictionary. So now I’ve got some questions, but no time to post them!
