I read it something like “town in the downwards direction”

Right, so the town is “all the way down”. Thanks! That’s what I originally thought, but “down from” threw me

Are you an Ent or something.

Honestly, on a ママチャリ, going uphill like that you probably won’t be much faster than walking. No wonder she was just sleeping forever.

I think it’s because the manager doesn’t say or think anything. He just watches.

She’d have to be going at least a little bit faster than walking - it’s 2pm at the start of the chapter, so if it took her nine hours without breaks, that’d mean starting at 5am. :slightly_smiling_face:

Whew, finally caught up with all these posts. It’s tough when there’s 100+ replies in a day or something. @.@ Anyway, I finished the reading yesterday, and aside from a few problem sections the astute readers here have already asked about, it’s all smooth sailing. Chapter 2 looks more involved, so I’m looking forward to all the questions. I need to see if I can sneak in a few of my own at some point; I just gotta be quick enough to beat others to the punch. :stuck_out_tongue:

I really enjoyed Rin and Nadashiko’s interactions here; Rin feels more like the closed-off type so far, so it was nice to see that she didn’t just immediately dismiss Nadashiko.

You’ve gotta get up really early in the morning if you want to beat me to the punch. :stuck_out_tongue: Unless you’re in, like, New Zealand…

How could you possibly dismiss this?

(Side note: immediately before the まっでよォー panel on page 19, the anime includes a brief shot showing Rin fleeing from Nadeshiko… and Nadeshiko trips over the chain that’s hanging across the driveway and completely faceplants. That may have assisted Rin’s sympathy a little. :slightly_smiling_face:)

They could start reading the day before and prepare their questions in a text file, just to copy/paste them as soon as the thread is up :stuck_out_tongue:

なぜうれしそうなんだ

なぜ - Why
うれし - overjoyed
そうなんだ - seems to be + is that so?

So maybe:

“Why does she seem so overjoyed?”

But it feels like I’m not translating なんだ properly which was explained to me further up the thread as “is that so”. Just not sure how i’d convert that to english in this context.

I think you’ve got the meaning, but you’re splitting it wrong.

Take this as is a single unit of meaning (to look/seem happy). Note that the ーそう suffix makes うれしい a NA-adjective.

うれしそう

As うれしそう is a NA-adj, we need this particle if it’s followed by anything but verbs or the copula だ.* This really belongs on the line above, but I’ve split it out to comment on it.

+な

Finally, we have shortened form of のだ, which has a bunch of meanings. I think in this case it’s indicating that this is Rin’s interpretation of how Nadeshiko looks…
See below.

+んだ

*reality is a little more complicated, but I don’t want to confuse things further.

I think i disagree with @theghostofdenzo here. の(だ)signifies an explanation, or in the case of a queston, seeking an explanation. So in her mind Rin is looking for an explanation for why Nashiko seems so happy. The な needs to be inserted after anything except verbs and い -adjectives.

なんでうれしいの?
なんでうれしそうなの?

This is my take on it

Urgh, somehow I forgot she was asking a question  It’s been a long day…

Yeah, I think you might be right, it looks like this one. I get the impression you wouldn’t typically use んだ for this though, and they seem to mostly be the same grammar point anyway.

I stand by my explanation of the ーな though. I think it makes more sense to think of it in terms to of the word it’s attached to.

Rin, thinking to herself:
戻ってラジオでも聴こ

戻って - to return, in て-form
ラジオ - radio
でも - ?
聴こ - let’s listen (I think this is the let’s form?)

“Lets go back and listen to the radio”

Anyone know what the でも is doing there?

Page 32

It took me ages to figure out what was going on in that second picture!

Page 34

Can anyone tell me what the kanji is in the last panel?
なんか[kanji]いわよ

And will learning that help me understand what およよ means?!

And that’s it! Done this week’s reading! It’s been great!
Thank you everyone for all of your help! :+1:

My understanding is that this is the “… or something” meaning of でも (see meaning No. 4 in jisho).

“Let’s go back and listen to the radio or something”

およよ is just a mouth-noise, like “eh-heh-heh” or something.
